Inside corners can be mitered or coped; outside corners use opposing miters. The right settings depend on the corner angle and molding profile, so a single angle chart is not universal.
Tools and materials
Gather what you need for the cutting method and the material you are installing:
- Crown molding, tape measure and pencil
- Miter saw or miter box; use a compound-capable saw if cutting the molding flat
- Coping saw for coped inside corners
- Level and stud finder
- Finish nails or an appropriate nailer and fasteners
- File or rasp for refining a joint
- Angle finder if the walls do not meet at a square corner
Use fasteners suited to both the molding and the substrate. The cited installation guides discuss these tools and methods but do not specify a particular brand or model. The Home Depot’s crown-molding guide and Lowe’s installation guide provide examples of the workflow.
Plan the layout and test the fit
- Measure each wall run and mark the molding, keeping its installed orientation in mind.
- Locate studs and ceiling joists so the run can be fastened securely.
- Make practice cuts from offcuts and fit the joint before cutting the final pieces.
- Inspect the fit. Remove excess material gradually and refine high spots with a file or rasp.
For a long wall, two lengths can meet at a scarf joint, made with opposing cuts along the run. Plan where the splice will fall so it can be secured appropriately, and test the joint before installation. The Home Depot guide describes this approach.

Choose how to hold and cut the molding
Nested cuts
Hold the molding against the saw fence and table in the same orientation it will have on the wall. Keep that orientation consistent from cut to cut; turning or flipping a piece unexpectedly can reverse the angle. Follow the saw manual for positioning and settings.
Flat compound cuts
Lay the molding flat on the saw and use both a miter and bevel setting. This method depends on the saw’s compound-cut capability and the correct settings for the trim and corner. A Lowe’s-hosted saw manual gives 33.9° bevel and 31.6° miter as examples for standard crown molding at a 90-degree angle between walls. Those figures are not universal: different profiles and corners that are not square can require different settings. Check the manual for your saw and test the cut on scrap before using finished stock. The saw manual’s chart states the 90-degree condition for its example.

Cut inside corners
An inside corner is where two walls meet inward. You can use matching miters or cope one piece so its decorative edge fits the face of the adjoining piece.

Mitered joint
Cut each piece at the angle needed for the corner, with the cuts oriented so the pieces meet when held in their installed positions. The angle depends on the actual corner and trim; make a test pair and check the fit in place before cutting the final lengths.
Coped joint
- Make a miter cut on the end of one piece to expose the molding’s profile.
- Use a coping saw to cut away the material behind the visible decorative edge, following that profile.
- Fit the coped edge against the face of the adjoining piece.
- Refine tight or high spots with a file or rasp, checking the fit as you go.
Coping is useful when the corner is out of square. The Home Depot notes, “Coped joints work best when a corner isn’t squaring up or is not at 90 degrees.” Its installation guide shows the method; Lowe’s also advises practicing on scrap before cutting the installation piece. Lowe’s guide

Corner blocks
Corner blocks are another option: install a block at the corner and cut the crown between blocks, often with straight cuts. They avoid detailed corner cuts but leave the blocks visible, so choose them when that detail suits the room’s style. Lowe’s guide and The Home Depot guide describe this approach.

An outside corner projects into the room. Measure from the outside edge, then cut opposing miters so the two pieces meet at the projecting point. Before cutting, confirm which face is finished and how the molding sits against the saw fence and table. Make practice cuts and check the pair in place; the actual corner angle and molding orientation affect the result. The Home Depot guide and Lowe’s guide cover outside-corner fitting.

Install the fitted run
- Start at a corner or another planned point and hold the molding at a consistent spring angle—the same tilt it will have between wall and ceiling.
- Use a level to keep the run straight.
- Fasten the lower edge into wall studs and the upper edge into ceiling joists along the run, using fasteners appropriate for the molding and substrate.
- Fit and fasten the next piece, checking each joint before continuing.
- Caulk or fill seams only where the material and intended finish make that suitable.
Lowe’s describes fastening the lower edge to wall studs and upper edge to ceiling joists along the run. See its installation guide.
Which approach should you use?
| Choice | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Nested cut | You can hold the molding securely in its installed orientation and follow the saw instructions. | Consistent positioning is essential; reversing the orientation can reverse the cut. |
| Flat compound cut | Your saw supports compound cuts and you can confirm settings for the trim and corner. | Requires both miter and bevel settings; sample chart values apply only under their stated conditions. |
| Mitered inside corner | The corner and trim allow the matching cuts to meet cleanly. | Fit can be difficult if the corner is not square. |
| Coped inside corner | You want the profile edge to fit the adjoining piece, especially at an out-of-square corner. | Requires coping and careful test fitting. |
| Corner blocks | You prefer simpler straight cuts between installed blocks. | The blocks remain visible as a design detail. |
These are process options, not product-test results; the cited guides do not provide comparative durability or cost data. The Home Depot guide, Lowe’s guide and the saw manual provide installation and setup guidance.
