You can often manage a small silverfish problem yourself, but traps alone are unlikely to solve a persistent infestation. First confirm what you’re seeing, then find and correct moisture, remove food and hiding places, seal gaps, and use traps to monitor activity. Consider a labeled pesticide only if these steps are not enough.

Confirm the pest and find where it is active

Silverfish and firebrats are fast-running, wingless insects with flattened, carrot-shaped bodies, two antennae, and three tail filaments. Their preferred locations differ: silverfish are commonly found in cool, damp spaces, while firebrats favor warm, moist places, including areas near heating equipment. If you’re unsure which insect you have, your local cooperative extension service may be able to help.

Look for insects at night, and inspect places where you find damaged paper or fabric, contaminated dry food, shed skins, scales, or small fecal spots. Check basements, bathrooms, attics, closets, stored boxes, and gaps around pipes. Concentrate your cleanup and monitoring near these signs rather than treating the whole house indiscriminately. The National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) and NC State Extension describe these identification clues and habitats.

Fix moisture before reaching for pesticides

Moisture is a priority: silverfish favor damp conditions, and their presence can indicate excess moisture nearby. Repair leaking pipes or other water sources, dry standing water, and improve ventilation with working fans. Insulate pipes that collect condensation where appropriate.

A dehumidifier may help in a closed, damp room such as a basement, bathroom, garage, or attic, but it does not replace fixing a leak or another underlying moisture source. NPIC’s silverfish guidance recommends reducing moisture; the University of California Statewide IPM Program also emphasizes correcting the conditions that support the insects.

Remove food and hiding places

Silverfish can feed on or shelter among paper, cardboard, books, fabrics, dust, and dry pantry foods. Vacuum floors, shelves, and likely hiding places; clear out old boxes, newspapers, and unused stored materials. Store flour, cereal, pasta, pet food, and other dry goods in tightly lidded containers. Protect vulnerable books, papers, and fabrics in sealed containers when storing them.

These steps reduce both food and harborage—the sheltered places where insects hide. Guidance from NC State Extension and the University of Florida IFAS Extension identifies stored materials and dry foods as relevant sources of food or shelter.

Seal gaps and use traps to monitor activity

Seal cracks and spaces around pipes, conduits, and other openings near observed activity. Traps can help you locate active areas and see whether numbers are falling, but they are not a dependable stand-alone cure for a large or persistent population.

Sticky traps are useful for monitoring and may provide some control when populations are small, according to NC State Extension. NPIC also describes a simple option: put masking tape around the outside of a lidless glass jar and place it where insects can reach it. Check traps regularly and keep them near suspected activity, rather than treating a few captures as proof that the source has been eliminated.

Decide whether pesticide is warranted

For occasional insects or a light infestation, physical control and moisture reduction may be enough; insecticides are not required in those cases. If activity is severe or continues despite cleanup and repairs, consider only a pesticide whose current label explicitly permits use against silverfish in the intended location. Follow every label direction and precaution, including restrictions on where and how the product may be applied. Product uses and availability vary, and some products may be restricted to licensed applicators.

The University of California Statewide IPM Program cautions that insecticides work poorly if moisture, food, and hiding places remain. It does not recommend foggers for silverfish and firebrats; NC State Extension notes that fogging may fail to reach insects hidden in places such as attics. Avoid treating pesticide use as a substitute for correcting the conditions that support the infestation.

When to call a pest professional

If a thorough program does not reduce activity over the following weeks, reassess the identification and look for moisture or sheltered areas you may have missed. The University of California Statewide IPM Program says that failure to control silverfish or firebrats within two or three weeks may indicate insects are coming from untreated areas or secluded harborages. Large, persistent, or hard-to-locate populations are a reasonable point to seek professional help; do-it-yourself control is not guaranteed.
