The correct lighting sequence depends on the appliance: some key-valve models use a long lighter or match, while standing-pilot models use a control knob and built-in igniter. Find the fireplace’s make and model and follow its manual before turning the key or releasing gas.
Identify what the wall key controls
Look for the fireplace’s model label and its owner’s manual. Then check whether the appliance has a key valve alone or also has a pilot control, igniter, wall switch, thermostat, or remote. A wall switch may control the fireplace’s on/off function or flame level, but that does not mean the key itself is the ignition control. Napoleon’s operating guidance describes more than one control arrangement.
Do not assume a turn direction, waiting interval, or lighting order from another fireplace. Use the procedure for your exact model; if you cannot identify the controls or the instructions are unclear, stop and contact the manufacturer or a qualified service technician.
How the control arrangements differ
| Arrangement | Ignition method | Main-burner control |
|---|---|---|
| Key-valve configuration described by Napoleon | A long lighter or match is positioned at the burner before the key is turned to release gas. This applies only to units whose own instructions specify this method. | The key valve is involved in operating the burner. |
| Standing-pilot configuration described by Heat & Glo | An appliance control knob is set to PILOT and held while the built-in igniter is operated. | After the pilot remains lit and the control is moved to ON, a wall switch or thermostat operates the main burner. |
These are examples, not interchangeable instructions. The manufacturers’ descriptions are specific to the configurations they cover: Napoleon and Heat & Glo’s lighting instructions.

If your manual specifies a key-valve lighting method
Napoleon describes the following sequence for the key-valve configuration covered by its guidance. Use it only if your fireplace’s manual calls for the same arrangement and procedure.
- Confirm the fireplace is the applicable key-valve type and read its instructions before attempting to light it.
- Insert the key into the valve without turning it.
- Position a long lighter or match at the burner as directed by the appliance instructions.
- Turn the key to release gas and light the burner, following the model-specific directions.
Do not substitute this sequence for a standing-pilot or electronic-ignition procedure. A long-reach lighter is relevant only when the appliance manual specifies manual lighting.

If your fireplace has a standing pilot
Heat & Glo’s instructions describe a different sequence for the standing-pilot models covered by that manual:
- Open the gas supply valve as directed in the manual.
- Locate the pilot and igniter, then set the appliance control knob to PILOT.
- Hold the control knob while operating the igniter, following the manual’s directions.
- If the pilot remains lit, move the control knob to ON.
- Use the wall switch or thermostat for normal main-burner operation.
Those steps are not a universal procedure for all Heat & Glo fireplaces or all gas fireplaces; consult the instructions for the exact model.
