What helps is a handful of repeatable habits: remove what is no longer needed, group similar belongings, give what remains a reliable home, choose storage to fit the space, and make small regular decisions that keep clutter from rebuilding.
1. They remove what they no longer need
Start by deciding what belongs in the home before rearranging shelves or buying containers. Work on one manageable area—a room, closet, or drawer—rather than trying to reorganize the entire house at once. The American Cleaning Institute recommends sorting items into four categories: keep, toss, donate, and sell. This makes the first step concrete and keeps the project within reach.
For a practical starting point, gather the items in one small area, then sort them into those four groups. Set aside anything that needs a clear decision instead of letting it drift back into the space.

2. They group similar things together
Bring like items together before deciding how much to keep or where to store them. When similar belongings are in one place, duplicates become easier to notice and you can judge what you actually use. The remaining group also gives you a better idea of the kind of home and storage it needs.
For example, collect household batteries, spare light bulbs, or cleaning supplies from wherever they have accumulated. Once you can see the whole category, decide what stays and choose one convenient place for it.

3. They give kept items a designated home
Everyday order depends on being able to return things to a predictable place after use. A designated home should make sense to the people who use the item, not just look tidy on a shelf. If a location is inconvenient or unclear, belongings are more likely to be left elsewhere.
Marie Kondo’s official KonMari site describes the purpose of storage this way: “The aim of storage is to give every item a home – a designated spot for it to rest and recharge when not in use.” Her guidance on giving everything a home captures the principle: assign a spot, then make putting an item back straightforward.

4. They choose storage for the belongings and space
Storage works best after sorting and grouping, when you know what needs to fit and where it will go. Measure both the available space and the items before buying anything. A container that is too large, too small, hard to access, or wrong for the category can make a system harder to use.
Consider whether you need to see contents at a glance or prefer them covered, whether the container fits the measured space, and whether it makes practical use of the area. Reuse suitable containers already on hand where possible. Bins and baskets are common choices for places such as pantries and under beds, but they are optional tools—not the starting point for organizing. Consumer Reports describes common storage choices; it does not establish one best option for every home.

5. They maintain the system with small decisions
Organization is easier to sustain when tidying is built into ordinary routines instead of saved for a major overhaul. When picking something up, decide whether to put it away, discard it, donate it, or sell it. A light recurring reset can address items that have accumulated before they spread into other areas.
A one-in, one-out rule can also help limit new accumulation: when a similar new item comes in, consider whether an older one should leave. The right reset cadence depends on the household; choose a routine that is realistic to repeat.

- Choose one small area. A single drawer, shelf, or closet is a more manageable starting point than the whole home.
- Sort before rearranging. Separate what stays from what will be tossed, donated, or sold.
- Group the keepers. Gather similar belongings so you can see what needs a home.
- Assign a predictable place. Put frequently used items where the household can return them easily.
- Measure before shopping. Check the space and the items; use a suitable container you already own if possible.
- Pick a small maintenance habit. Decide what happens to items as you handle them, and set a reset rhythm you can maintain.
Should you buy storage bins before decluttering?
No. Sort and group belongings first, then measure the items and the space. That sequence helps you buy only storage that fits what you are keeping, and may show that an existing container will do the job.
