It works best as temporary sheet mulch while a bed is being prepared—not as a permanent, weed-proof surface.
What cardboard sheet mulch can—and cannot—do
Cardboard is a light-blocking layer beneath mulch. It can suppress existing vegetation and many annual weeds while the covered area breaks down into a plantable bed. Extension guidance also notes important limits: aggressive perennial weeds may survive, and rain or overhead irrigation may run off the paper, encourage weeds along the edges, or make it difficult to judge soil moisture underneath. Sheets can tear after planting or foot traffic. UC Statewide IPM’s sheet-mulching guidance explains these trade-offs.
Use the method where you can keep the cover damp and maintain its edges. It is particularly useful for converting turf or preparing a weedy patch. Around established plants, paths, or in places where irrigation and soil-moisture checks are difficult, weigh the upkeep against other mulch options.
Prepare cardboard and choose one recipe
Remove packaging extras
Flatten plain corrugated boxes and remove tape, staples, labels, and address stickers. Avoid waxed or glossy material. Use caution with brightly colored printing and heavy-duty seams: Clemson Extension notes that colorful inks may contain heavy metals and that seam adhesives may contain chemicals; tape and labels add plastic. Its guidance is to use cardboard as a bed-preparation tool, not to assume it improves soil in every situation. As it decomposes, cardboard can take nitrogen from soil or compost, and the long-term effects across soil types are not established. Clemson Extension’s overview discusses the benefits and drawbacks.

Match the layer depth to the extension recipe
There is no single layer count or mulch depth shared by all extension recipes. Choose one approach and follow it as a whole rather than combining the figures into a universal prescription:
| Recipe and use | Cardboard and overlap | Cover and timing |
|---|---|---|
| University of Vermont Extension, lawn-to-garden conversion (2026) | Overlap cardboard edges by 8–10 inches. | Cover with 4–6 inches of mulch; allow about 4–6 months for cardboard and mulch to break down before planting. Read the Vermont conversion directions. |
| Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, garden mulch advice (publication year not stated on the page) | Use one or two cardboard layers; excessive thickness can inhibit water and air movement. | Choose mulch with the job, availability, cost, appearance, and durability in mind. Read Iowa State’s mulch guidance. |
| UC Master Gardener Program of Contra Costa County, quick-start sheet mulching (2026) | Use two or three layers and overlap edges by 8 inches. | Add 1–2 inches of compost and at least 3 inches of final mulch. Read the Contra Costa quick start. |
| UC Marin Master Gardeners, sheet-composting guidance (publication year not stated on the page) | Not stated on the page. | Use 2–4 inches of weed-free mulch and allow 4–6 months or longer to decompose. Read the Marin compost-systems guidance. |
These are recommendations for their respective contexts, not comparative trial results. Iowa State also identifies cardboard and paper as options for vegetable gardens, pathways, and around trees and shrubs; it recommends selecting mulch based on the function and conditions of the site.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
How to lay cardboard over lawn or weeds
- Plan the bed. Mark its outline and cut the grass low. If you are planting large specimens, make their large holes before laying the cardboard where feasible. Vermont Extension mentions an edging tool or flat garden spade for shaping the perimeter; an existing suitable tool is enough.
- Lay clean sheets with overlapping edges. Leave no gaps where vegetation can receive light. Use the overlap and layer count from the recipe you selected above.
- Wet the cardboard as you work. Damp sheets are easier to keep in place and begin breaking down. Keep the layers moist during decomposition.
- Cover the sheets completely. Use natural organic mulch such as leaves, pine needles, grass clippings, bark mulch, or wood chips. Do not leave the cardboard exposed to dry out or shift.
- Wait for the bed to break down. For lawn conversions, Vermont Extension and UC Marin guidance point to roughly four to six months, with Marin allowing longer. The time needed varies with conditions, so check that the material has decomposed sufficiently before planting.
- Plant without burying the plant base in mulch. Scrape mulch aside and plant into soil. The Contra Costa recipe allows smaller plants to be set into its compost-and-mulch layer; larger plants may need a hole through the cardboard. Keep mulch away from plant bases.
Watch moisture, edges, and weeds
Check the bed periodically, especially after irrigation or heavy rain. UC IPM warns that water can run off paper, that weeds may establish at sheet edges, and that it can be hard to assess moisture below the barrier. Repair gaps or torn sections and keep the covering damp enough to decompose. If a perennial weed returns, cardboard has not eliminated its roots; deal with the regrowth rather than assuming another dry, exposed layer will solve the problem.
Cardboard may be a useful temporary barrier, but it is not a substitute for ongoing mulch and bed care. For long-term plant health, Clemson Extension recommends treating it as one bed-preparation option rather than relying on it to build soil in every setting.
