It depends on which “bottom” you mean: the compacted foundation beneath a masonry pit, the heat-facing interior of a wood-burning pit, or decorative media around a gas burner. Gravel may suit the foundation, while a gas burner needs only the media specified for that appliance. Treat these as different jobs, not interchangeable layers.
First, identify which part of the fire pit you are building
- Foundation: The prepared ground and compacted base beneath an in-ground masonry pit. It supports the structure; it is not the exposed fire floor.
- Liner: A heat-resistant inner surface that protects masonry from direct heat.
- Burner media or fill: Material placed inside a fire bowl or around a gas burner. The appliance design determines what is compatible.
Fuel matters, too. A wood-burning pit, a gas fire ring, and a masonry surround can call for different materials and arrangements. Follow the pit and burner instructions for the assembly you actually have.
Seven materials and their best-supported uses
1. Gravel or crushed paver base: for the foundation
Compacted gravel or crushed paver base is a well-supported choice beneath an in-ground masonry pit. Lowe’s build guide describes about two inches of gravel base in its project, while The Home Depot describes a roughly five-inch finished base in its own guide. Those are different project recipes, not competing universal specifications. Use the depth and grading required by your design and site.
The Home Depot’s sequence uses prepared, compacted dirt beneath the gravel base, then tamps and levels the aggregate. See The Home Depot’s fire pit guide and Lowe’s fire pit guide.

2. Sand: for leveling or bedding where the design calls for it
Sand can serve as a leveling or bedding layer, and some project instructions place it inside or beneath a fire ring. It is not a default substitute for a compacted structural base, and it is not a substitute for gas-burner media prescribed by the appliance maker. Lowe’s includes sand in its in-ground pit installation guidance; the Exotic Fire Glass information sheet describes fine sand or pea gravel beneath a fire ring in its specific setup.
Use the layer only where your pit design or manufacturer specifies it. See Lowe’s in-ground fire pit guide and the Exotic Fire Glass information sheet.

3. Lava rock: for compatible fire-pit media
Lava rock is sold for fire-pit use, but the name alone does not establish that a particular product is suitable for every pit. Choose material identified as heat resistant and approved for the specific appliance. Gas systems differ in how they arrange lava rock and other media, so do not transfer a layering recipe from one burner to another.
Both Lowe’s and American Fire Products discuss lava rock in fire-pit contexts, but that does not make their recommendations universal. Check the burner manual and product labeling before filling the pit. See Lowe’s guidance and American Fire Products’ FAQ.

Porous structure absorbs harmful bacteria, waste residues, and heavy metal ions. Perfect for water features, swimming pools, aquariums, and pond ecosystems.
4. Fire glass: decorative media for compatible gas pits
Fire glass can be used as decorative media in compatible gas fire pits. Its placement and depth depend on the burner system. The Exotic Fire Glass sheet warns against porous material beneath the glass in its described gas setup because gas can collect there; American Fire Products recommends a lava-rock base before fire glass for its guidance. These instructions differ because they concern particular systems. Follow the instructions for your own burner and media rather than combining the two recipes.
See the Exotic Fire Glass information sheet and American Fire Products’ FAQ.

5. Fire brick: for a heat-protective masonry liner
Fire-rated brick can protect masonry blocks from high temperatures when used as a liner in a design that calls for one. Belgard recommends a metal liner or fire-rated brick for that protective role. This is not the same as loose fill in the bottom, and the cited guidance does not establish that every fire pit requires a liner.
Belgard also advises avoiding overheating and providing the designed air vents. Consult its Technical Resource Guide alongside the requirements for your particular pit.

- 【Explosion-Proof & Safer Burning Performance】Premium pre-treatment greatly cuts high-temp popping, spalling, and fly-stone risk compared with ordinary untreated lava rock. 100% genuine volcanic stone (not ceramic, not concrete), fire-grade to ~2000°F (1093°C), resists cracking under sustained gas flame. Porous structure delivers even gas diffusion for stable, clean flames. Allow rocks to dry completely before first use—wet stone can still crack from steam. NOT for wood-burning fires.
- 【LARGE 1–3 INCH SIZE, 10 LB BAG】Bold, irregular black pieces that naturally conceal burner pipes, igniter covers, and steel pans in fire pit tables. One 10 lb bag covers roughly 0.5–1 sq ft at a 2-inch layer; measure your fire feature’s interior—most 24–28 inch fire pit tables need 3–5 bags for full coverage. Layer 2–3 inches over the burner, no tools or pro install required. Pairs with GASPRO fire glass for a custom stacked look.
- 【HEAT RETENTION & EVEN GAS RADIATION】The porous volcanic structure acts like a thermal battery: it absorbs heat while burning and keeps radiating gentle warmth long after the valve shuts. Open-cell pores also disperse propane or natural gas evenly through the bed for a fuller, cleaner flame pattern—ideal for cool patio evenings, fire bowls, and propane fire pit tables.
- 【MULTI-USE: FIRE PITS, AQUARIUMS, GARDENS】Use as premium fire pit filler, a neutral thick base layer under fire glass, or decorative hardscape for large garden beds, landscape pond edges, and freshwater aquariums. Classic natural black tones blend seamlessly with rough stone, concrete, and modern outdoor furniture. Porous structure helps plant roots breathe and retain moisture for better plant growth. Note: heat retained in fire mode will not raise aquarium water temperature in typical tank setups. Not for full water submersion.
- 【LOW MAINTENANCE, NO ASH OR SOOT】Produces zero ash, soot, or smoke when paired with gas or propane. Rinse with water and air-dry fully between uses—no scrubbing, no sealants. Built to last through multiple seasons; top up with a fresh bag whenever you want to refresh the bed. Backed by GASPRO quality and responsive support.
6. Concrete slabs or pavers: for a designed non-combustible surface
Concrete slabs and pavers may form a stable, non-combustible surface or patio context, and Lowe’s lists concrete slabs among common fire-pit bottom materials. That does not establish that any slab can withstand direct fire heat. Confirm that the pit, the slab, and their spacing are designed for the intended use; do not assume ordinary patio concrete is a fire-rated firebox floor.
7. Dirt or prepared native soil: beneath a built foundation
Prepared ground is the starting surface beneath a constructed base. Lowe’s includes dirt among common materials, and The Home Depot’s project places compacted dirt beneath gravel. That ground layer should not be confused with leaving exposed soil as the finished interior floor of a fire pit. Build the base and interior according to the design and instructions for your pit.
Quick Recap

| Dirt or prepared native soil | Ground beneath a built foundation | Distinguish the subgrade from the finished fire-facing floor. |
Safety checks before filling or lighting the pit
- Use only stones and media specified as heat resistant for the fire pit; ordinary landscape stone is not a universal substitute.
- For a gas pit, use the burner maker’s instructions for media type, placement, and layer arrangement. Generic guidance from another product may not fit your system.
- For masonry, use the intended heat protection, avoid overheating, and keep designed air vents open.
- Check local fire codes and the instructions for the complete pit or appliance. Available project examples do not establish one base depth for every fire pit.
