For a familiar green snap bean: Kentucky Wonder
Kentucky Wonder is a traditional choice if you like thick, tender pods borne in clusters. Plan to deal with strings when preparing the beans. If you are looking at Kentucky Wonder 191, keep its rust-resistance description specific to that strain; it should not be assumed for every seed packet labeled Kentucky Wonder.

Romano is a useful direction if you prefer a broad, flat pod rather than the rounder snap-bean form. Because Romano is also sold as a bush bean, confirm that a packet or listing explicitly identifies a pole type before buying.

Plan support and planting around the vines

How to choose seeds without overreading the label
- Choose the pod you want to eat. Look for stringless Blue Lake Pole, traditional Kentucky Wonder, or a Romano pole type if you prefer broad, flat pods. Scarlet Runner adds flowers and edible young pods.
- Confirm pole form. A cultivar name alone may not tell you whether a packet is a climbing or bush type. This is especially important for Romano.
- Read maturity as an estimate. Catalog and extension figures are useful for comparing descriptions, but local conditions and the source’s strain or region matter.
- Keep resistance claims attached to the exact cultivar. Kentucky Blue’s stated resistance is for that named cultivar in Kentucky’s guide; rust resistance is specifically listed for Kentucky Wonder 191.
- Prepare the climbing space. Set up suitable support and plan for consistent soil moisture.
