Washington, DC’s historic buildings extend well beyond the monuments and federal landmarks on the National Mall. This curated selection highlights 25 places across different eras, neighborhoods, and uses—and explains how to check a building’s designation and whether visitors can go inside.
Historic status and visitor access are separate questions: a listing does not mean a building is open to the public. Confirm current hours, tours, admission, and photography rules with the building’s operator before making a trip.
How to read historic status in Washington, DC
The District’s DC Inventory of Historic Sites is the local official list of landmarks and historic districts. Properties on the Inventory are protected under District historic-preservation law, which promotes compatible alterations and adaptation for current use. The Inventory began in 1964 and includes more than 500 landmarks, more than three dozen historic districts, and approximately 23,600 buildings, according to the District’s overview of historic landmarks and districts.
The National Register of Historic Places is a separate federal program administered by the National Park Service. The NPS describes it as “the official list of the Nation’s historic places worthy of preservation.” A National Register listing, a DC Inventory designation, and National Historic Landmark status are not interchangeable claims; check the relevant official record and use the exact status. The NPS’s District of Columbia list gives federal listings and years. For context, the NPS reported in mid-2025 that more than 100,000 properties listed in the National Register represented about two million contributing resources nationwide—not a Washington, DC count.

How to verify a building’s designation and plan a visit
- Search the local register. Use the District’s DC Inventory of Historic Sites, which can be searched by property type or theme and is available in downloadable versions. Record whether the property itself is listed or is contributing to a historic district.
- Check the federal record separately. Search the National Park Service’s District of Columbia National Register list. If describing a National Register listing or National Historic Landmark designation, use the exact status shown in the federal record.
- Cross-check building history. Search the address in HistoryQuest DC for leads on construction dates, architects, owners, and builders, then corroborate details with property-specific official records or institutional histories.
- Verify visitor access with the operator. Check current entry rules, hours, tours, admission, reservations, closures, and photography policies on the official site for that building or responsible agency. A designation does not establish public access.
- Plan around the building’s current use. A courthouse, house museum, hotel, church, working market, and museum do not operate alike. Confirm that the areas you want to see are open on your visit date and follow security or guest-area restrictions.
The District’s Historic Preservation Office also says it provides bound copies of the official Inventory and maps of historic-district boundaries. These can supplement the online records when planning a route or checking a district’s extent.
