Close a dollar bill or strip of ordinary paper in the refrigerator door and pull gently. A little drag or tension means the seal is gripping at that spot; paper that slips out easily suggests it may not be sealing there. Repeat the check around the entire door before deciding what to do next.
How to do the paper test
- Place a dollar bill or a strip of ordinary paper between the door gasket and the refrigerator cabinet.
- Close the door on the paper, then pull it out gently. Whirlpool says you should feel tension as the paper comes free: Whirlpool Product Help.
- Repeat at several points along the top, both sides and bottom of the door. A grip at one point does not show that the entire perimeter seals; Norcold advises checking all four sides in its owner’s manual.
What the result tells you
Paper has noticeable drag
The gasket is gripping where you tested. It does not establish that every section of the seal is sound, so check the rest of the perimeter.
Paper slides out easily
That suggests a possible sealing problem at that location, not proof that the gasket needs replacement. A door that cannot close fully may also be affected by something obstructing it or by the refrigerator’s position.
What to check before replacing the gasket
LG USA Support recommends checking for food or containers blocking the door, wiping residue from the gasket with a warm towel, pressing a loose gasket back into its groove, and confirming the refrigerator is on firm, level flooring. See LG’s door and gasket guidance.

When a repair may be needed
Door adjustment or gasket replacement are possible repair paths, but they are not universal fixes. The refrigerator reference document “Refrigerators” describes these options generally; the right procedure and part depend on the appliance. Identify the exact make and model, then consult its manual or manufacturer support before attempting an adjustment or ordering a gasket.
