No—not across every DEWALT tool and charger. Compatibility depends on the battery family and the exact tool and charger models. FLEXVOLT is the main cross-platform option: compatible packs can operate in compatible 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools, but that does not make every battery or charger interchangeable. Check the tool manual before buying or connecting a pack.
How DEWALT battery-platform compatibility works
Battery labels such as 20V MAX, 60V MAX and 18V XR identify platforms, but a shared DEWALT brand name is not enough to establish compatibility. The battery must be suitable for the tool’s voltage and model, and the charger must be listed as compatible with that battery.
FLEXVOLT packs are designed to switch voltage automatically when moved between compatible tool platforms. DEWALT lists its DCB612 12Ah battery for 20V MAX, 60V MAX and 120V MAX tools, and for all 20V MAX chargers. These are product-specific compatibility claims, not proof that every FLEXVOLT pack works with every tool or charger. DEWALT DCB612 specifications.
Can a 20V MAX battery power a 60V MAX tool?
Do not assume it can. The documented FLEXVOLT bridge works in the direction DEWALT specifies: compatible FLEXVOLT packs can serve compatible 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools. DEWALT UK support says XR FLEXVOLT tools have a 54V motor and need a 54V battery; that is not a basis for using an ordinary 20V MAX pack in a 60V MAX tool. What about 18V XR tools and chargers?
DEWALT UK says XR FLEXVOLT batteries are compatible with the “majority” of the 18V XR product range, including chargers. “Majority” is a qualification: it does not confirm compatibility with every 18V XR tool or charger. Check the documentation for the exact models. The cited support guidance is UK-specific and should not be treated as a complete compatibility chart for other regional product ranges. How to check a specific battery, tool and charger
- Find the exact model numbers. Read the labels on the tool, battery and charger; platform names alone are not enough.
- Check the tool manual’s battery list. Confirm that the battery model is named for that tool and that its voltage requirement is met.
- Check the charger separately. Look for the charger model in the battery or tool documentation. Do not infer charger compatibility just because the battery fits the tool.
- Confirm region and generation. DEWALT guidance may differ by market or product range. Use the manual for the exact product sold in your region.
For example, the U.S. DCST981 manual lists FLEXVOLT batteries DCB609, DCB609G, DCB612 and DCB615, and chargers DCB094, DCB102, DCB103, DCB104, DCB107, DCB112, DCB113, DCB115, DCB118, DCB132, DCB1102, DCB1104, DCB1106 and DCB1112. - User Guide:When installing the battery, align it with the slot and apply moderate pressure until you hear a click, indicating it is securely in place. After installation, gently pull the battery to verify it is locked. Clean the contacts regularly and use compatible batteries to ensure proper operation.
Do not force a battery or use an adapter to bypass compatibility
If a pack does not fit or its model is not listed as compatible, do not force it, modify it or rely on an unverified adapter. The DCST981 manual warns that using other battery packs may create injury and fire risks. For legacy platforms or combinations not covered by the cited examples, compatibility is not established here; consult the exact tool manual or DEWALT support rather than extrapolating from FLEXVOLT.
