While the walls are open, prioritize the infrastructure that is difficult to add later: Ethernet, conduit, and power pathways. Then plan for smart lighting, heating and cooling controls, energy monitoring, security devices, and a control platform that can work with the equipment you choose. The right time to coordinate all six is during design, before electrical and low-voltage rough-ins are closed in.
Use this guide to coordinate smart-home features with your contractor and electrician. Installation needs vary by device and house, so confirm wiring, power, network, and regional electrical requirements for the specific products you select.
| Upgrade | When it is easiest to plan | Key design decision |
|---|---|---|
| Structured Ethernet, conduit, and PoE pathways | Before drywall; cable routes and central wiring location are being planned | Which fixed devices need a wired connection or future-ready pathway? |
| Smart lighting controls | Before electrical boxes and control wiring are finalized | Will switches, connected fixtures, or a combination suit each room? |
| ENERGY STAR smart thermostat | During HVAC and electrical coordination | Is the thermostat compatible with the system, wiring, and any zoning? |
| Plug-load and whole-home energy monitoring | Before selecting devices or finalizing panel plans | How will you measure usage, and where will the data be processed? |
| Cameras, doorbells, and access control | Before exterior finishes and drywall conceal routes | Where are power and network connections needed, and how will devices be secured? |
| Interoperability and control layer | During product selection, before committing to a platform | Can the chosen controller support the devices and control behavior you need? |
1. Plan structured Ethernet, conduit, and PoE pathways
Wired infrastructure is the most remodel-dependent part of a smart home. A wireless device can often be added later; opening finished walls to route cable is disruptive. Decide where a central wiring location belongs, then map cable runs to fixed devices rather than relying on Wi-Fi for every connection.
Map drops and pathways before rough-in
Consider Ethernet drops for wireless access points, televisions, desks, cameras, doorbells, and other fixed equipment. Add conduit where future cable changes may be useful. A pathway does not guarantee that every future system will use the same cable, but it can make later upgrades less invasive.

For projects involving multiple network-enabled building systems, BICSI identifies ANSI/BICSI 007-2024 as a standard covering ICT connectivity, building automation, energy-management systems, low-voltage and PoE lighting, video surveillance, access control, and AV systems. Its scope is broader than residential smart-home wiring, but it illustrates why infrastructure planning should account for more than internet access alone.
Coordinate power and network needs
Power over Ethernet (PoE) can supply power and network connectivity over a compatible Ethernet connection, which may suit some access points or cameras. Confirm device requirements and the network equipment needed to power them; do not assume every Ethernet-connected product supports PoE. Ask the installer to label cable runs and document the central wiring location and routes for future service.
2. Choose smart lighting controls room by room
Smart lighting can provide remote control, schedules, occupancy-related automation, and tunable light color, depending on the products selected. During a remodel, decide whether smart switches, connected fixtures, or a mix will provide the controls you want. Smart switches can preserve familiar wall control while allowing connected operation; connected fixtures may offer features such as tunable color.

Match the control to the room and wiring plan
Review each room’s switching layout, fixture type, and desired control behavior with your electrician. Provide suitable electrical boxes and control wiring for the chosen equipment. If you rely only on replaceable smart bulbs, consider how occupants will use the wall switch: cutting power at the switch can prevent a bulb from responding to app or automation commands.

ENERGY STAR’s stated minimum bundle is one ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostat, two qualifying connected-lighting products or an equivalent smart-switch combination, and one plug-load monitor or control. The exact combination must meet the program’s criteria; it is not a claim that any two smart bulbs and any switch automatically qualify.
3. Add an ENERGY STAR smart thermostat
A connected thermostat is one of the core SHEMS devices identified by ENERGY STAR. Select it in coordination with the heating and cooling equipment, not as a last-minute trim choice. Confirm compatibility with the HVAC system and the conductors required by the thermostat before walls are closed.

Coordinate controls with HVAC design
If the home has, or will have, multiple HVAC zones, discuss how the thermostat and any room sensors will work with the zoning equipment. A sensor can inform temperature control in a room, but it does not by itself create a separate HVAC zone. Have the HVAC contractor confirm the control scheme and wiring requirements for the system being installed.
ENERGY STAR identifies connected thermostats as part of a smart-home energy-management package, but no single savings percentage applies to every home. Results depend on factors such as the existing system, settings, household routines, and climate; choose the device for compatibility and useful control rather than a guaranteed bill reduction.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Include plug-load and whole-home energy monitoring
Energy monitoring can show consumption for selected appliances or, with a compatible home-energy monitor, broader household usage. Smart plugs and smart power strips can also provide control or schedules for connected loads. ENERGY STAR’s SHEMS criteria include one plug-load monitor or control and describe schedules, usage feedback, and occupancy-based actions.

Check what the system measures and where data goes
Before choosing a product, compare the quality and detail of its usage reporting, whether it operates locally or depends on cloud services, and how you can access the data. If you are considering a panel-connected monitor, confirm compatibility with the electrical panel and have the appropriate qualified professional assess installation requirements. A monitor that reports consumption and a control device that can switch a load solve related but different problems; check which function the product actually provides.

Plan exterior camera, video-doorbell, and access-control locations before drywall and exterior finishes hide convenient cable routes. Provide the power and network pathways required by the devices you select, and coordinate locations with the construction team so that equipment is accessible for installation and service.
Make security part of the installation plan
BICSI’s ANSI/BICSI 007-2024 scope includes video surveillance and access control as building systems. UK government guidance also identifies cameras and doorbells as common internet-connected devices and cautions that they need ongoing security management—not just a one-time setup.

The FTC’s smart-device advice includes keeping software current, using strong administrative settings, enabling encryption, considering sensible network separation, and disabling remote management when it is unnecessary. Decide who will manage accounts and updates after installation, and check whether the device’s essential functions depend on a cloud account or subscription.
6. Select an interoperability and control layer
A controller or platform can coordinate devices, but compatibility is specific: a shared standard does not make every device work with every controller or deliver the same features. Start with the functions and products the household expects to use, then check the controller and device documentation before selecting the platform.
Verify more than the Matter label
The Connectivity Standards Alliance reports that Matter 1.4 adds improvements to energy-management and thermostat clusters. Treat Matter as an interoperability aid rather than a guarantee of full compatibility. For each planned device, verify its supported radio, controller support, wiring and power needs, required app, update policy, and local-control behavior. Check which features remain available if internet access or a vendor’s cloud service is unavailable.
Coordinate the decisions before the walls close
- List fixed devices and desired functions. Mark likely locations for access points, televisions, desks, cameras, doorbells, lighting controls, energy monitors, and thermostats.
- Review the infrastructure plan. Agree on the central wiring location, Ethernet drops, conduit routes, electrical boxes, and device power needs with the relevant trades.
- Check product compatibility. Confirm HVAC controls, panel compatibility for any energy monitor, PoE requirements, controller support, and any required apps or accounts.
- Document the installation. Keep cable labels, route information, equipment details, and account-management responsibilities with the home’s maintenance records.
- Plan ongoing care. Decide who will install updates, review device access, and manage subscriptions or cloud-dependent functions after handover.
There is no broadly applicable installation-cost figure or homeowner energy-savings percentage established by the cited standards and program guidance. Costs depend on the project, device choices, and installation conditions, so request estimates based on the actual plans and equipment.
