First identify what happens when you press the electric-start control: does the starter fail to turn, or does it turn the engine without starting it? Those symptoms point to different troubleshooting paths. For a cord-connected starter that does not turn, check the cord and outlet. If the starter turns but the engine does not run, follow the snow blower’s starting procedure and check basic engine-start items.
When the electric starter does not turn
On a cord-connected model, the problem may be in the starter’s power supply rather than the engine. Toro’s troubleshooting guidance lists a cord disconnected at either end, a worn, corroded or damaged cord, and an outlet that is not energized among the possible causes. Use the instructions for your exact machine model; Toro’s interactive manual also directs owners to the specified extension cord and receptacle requirements.
- Check both connections. Confirm the cord is connected at the outlet and at the snow blower, following the manual’s instructions.
- Inspect the cord. Look for visible wear, corrosion or damage. Do not use a damaged cord.
- Check whether the outlet has power. If it is not energized, have a qualified electrician address the outlet; do not treat that as a snow blower repair.
- Confirm the cord specification. Use only the extension-cord and receptacle type specified in the operator’s manual. Requirements vary, so do not assume a particular gauge, length or rating applies to every machine.
If the connections, cord and outlet appear correct but the starter still does not turn, consult the exact model’s manual or contact qualified service. Do not disassemble the starter or bypass switches based on general troubleshooting advice.
When the starter turns but the engine will not start
This is an engine no-start, not a failure of the electric starter to turn. Honda’s HS720AS troubleshooting page uses separate labels for “Electric Starter Will Not Operate” and “Starter Operates but the Engine Will Not Start”; the page is a third-party manual reproduction, so verify procedures in the original manual for your model. For engine troubleshooting, Briggs & Stratton’s general guide covers fuel, the spark plug, the carburetor, and ignition or compression checks.

Follow the machine’s starting sequence
Use the operator’s manual for the correct controls and starting sequence, including any fuel, choke or priming instructions. These details vary by machine and engine. Husqvarna’s UK troubleshooting guide discusses fuel and starting controls, but regional and engine-specific fuel recommendations should not be treated as universal.
Check the spark plug only to the model’s specification
A dirty, worn or incorrectly specified spark plug can be relevant to an engine that will not start. Confirm the correct plug type and gap in your snow blower’s operator manual before inspecting or replacing it. Husqvarna likewise directs owners to the manual for the correct spark plug type and gap.

Respect model-specific starter timing
For Husqvarna ST 424/427/430, the manufacturer’s electric-start instructions say to run the starter for no more than five seconds per attempt and wait five to ten seconds between attempts. This timing is specific to those models; use the instructions for your own machine rather than applying it to other snow blowers.

If the basic checks in the relevant model manual do not resolve the problem, contact qualified small-engine service. Briggs & Stratton recommends service when its basic no-start troubleshooting does not solve the issue. Persistent problems involving ignition, compression, the carburetor or the starter itself may need model-specific diagnosis.
