Use the 30 tips below as a sequence—from preparation to move-day paperwork—rather than as a promise that packing will be effortless or damage-proof.
Before you start packing
1. Sort before you buy boxes
Make separate keep, donate or sell, and discard piles. Moving fewer belongings means fewer boxes to pack and unload. The U.S. Department of Defense’s Personal Property Activity recommends decluttering before a move (PPA moving and packing tips).
2. Pack less-used belongings first
Start with seasonal items, spare linens, books you will not need, and decor. Leave the things you use every day for the final stretch. This is a scheduling tactic, not a rule: adjust it for your household and move date.
3. Gather supplies before filling boxes
Have assorted box sizes, packing tape, a marker, and packing paper or other cushioning ready. Add small resealable bags for furniture hardware. Sturdy boxes and cushioning help protect contents in transit (DHL packing instructions).

4. Pack one room at a time
Keep each room’s belongings together where practical. Working room by room makes it easier to label boxes for their destination and reduces the chance of a box of kitchen items ending up mixed with bedroom goods. PPA recommends packing by room.
5. Create a do-not-pack area
Set aside identification and other important documents, medication, phones and chargers, cash, jewelry, and the items you will need immediately. Mark the area “DO NOT PACK” and keep it physically separate from boxes headed to the mover.
6. Photograph valuable belongings
Take clear photos of valuable items and their condition before packing. Keep the images with your personal records rather than relying on exterior box labels as an inventory.
Choose and label boxes for easy unloading
7. Match box size to weight
Put dense items such as books in smaller boxes and light, bulky belongings such as pillows in larger ones. PPA gives this advice directly; Royal Mail also recommends choosing box sizes to suit contents (Royal Mail’s house-move packing guide).
8. Keep lifting weight manageable
PPA’s military-move guidance says to keep each box under 50 pounds. That is a recommendation from this specific source, not a universal legal or safe-lifting limit; use smaller boxes or divide the contents if a box is difficult to lift.

9. Avoid mixing rooms without a reason
Keep a box’s contents together by room when possible. If you do combine rooms to use space efficiently, list both destinations prominently so the box is not sent to the wrong area.
10. Put the room and contents on the label
Write the destination room and a useful description of what is inside, such as “Kitchen — mugs and tea” rather than “Miscellaneous.” Put the label on the top and on more than one side so it can still be read when boxes are stacked. PPA advises clear labeling.
11. Use color as a backup, not the whole system
Color-coded tape or labels can help distinguish rooms at a glance, but pair each color with written room names. Color alone may be unclear to other household members or movers.
12. Number boxes and keep a matching list
Give each box a unique number and record that number, destination room, and key contents in a notebook or digital list. Royal Mail recommends numbering boxes and keeping a contents list; a numbered record also makes it easier to look up an item without opening several boxes.
13. Make fragile labels easy to see
Mark boxes containing breakables clearly on visible sides. A fragile label communicates how you want a box handled, but it does not replace careful wrapping and cushioning.

15. Keep exterior labels discreet
Use general contents descriptions rather than listing sensitive personal details or valuables on the outside of a box. Keep more complete notes in your private inventory.

16. Wrap breakables individually
Wrap fragile items one at a time and add cushioning between pieces so hard surfaces do not knock against one another. Royal Mail advises using padding when packing household items.
17. Fill empty spaces
Add packing paper or other suitable cushioning to gaps so the contents do not shift when the box is moved. DHL’s packing guidance emphasizes cushioning and filling voids for shipping; the same basic principle helps keep household boxes stable.
18. Pack plates on their rims
Place plates vertically on their edges with cushioning between them, rather than stacking them flat. Royal Mail specifically recommends packing plates on their rims with padding.

Towels and linens can cushion suitable items when they fit securely, and they make useful use of space. Do not rely on soft fabric alone to protect unusually delicate or valuable belongings; use appropriate packing materials and ask the mover about special-care items.
21. Use a sound box suited to its load
Choose a sturdy, appropriately sized box for heavy or fragile contents. A box that is damaged, too large, or poorly suited to its load may be harder to handle and protect; DHL advises matching packaging strength to the contents.
22. Close boxes securely and keep labels clear
Seal boxes with packing tape so flaps stay closed during handling. Keep tape from obscuring the room, contents, or fragile labels. DHL’s carrier guidance also emphasizes secure packaging and clear labeling.
23. Ask about special-care property
Before packing antiques, artwork, electronics, or other items that may need special handling, ask the mover what preparation and packing they require. Requirements can depend on the item and the move arrangement.

Prepare furniture and move-day essentials
24. Keep furniture hardware with the furniture
Place screws and fittings in a labeled bag and attach it to the largest corresponding furniture component. PPA recommends keeping hardware with the item it belongs to.
25. Keep assembly tools accessible
Set aside the tools you are likely to need to reassemble furniture. Keep them out of the shipment or in a clearly marked, accessible box rather than burying them among packed belongings.
26. Protect the do-not-pack area on move day
Keep personal essentials separate from the shipment and tell everyone helping with the move that the area is not for packing. A sign or closed room can make the boundary clear.
27. Carry personal valuables on international moves
For international household shipments, the Federal Maritime Commission advises carrying valuables personally rather than placing them in the shipment. Confirm your mover’s instructions and the rules for your route.

28. Check restrictions before shipping vehicles or fuel-powered appliances abroad
Ask the mover before including a car or gas-powered appliance in an international shipment; restrictions or special requirements may apply. The Federal Maritime Commission’s guidance is specifically for international moves, not a general rule for every local or domestic move (FMC international moving advice).
29. Review the inventory and mover paperwork
For an international move, the FMC advises checking that the mover’s inventory describes items clearly and includes identifying details such as size, make, model, and serial number for larger electronics. Do not sign a blank or incomplete inventory; note errors or disagreements about condition before signing. For a U.S. interstate move, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration says the mover prepares an inventory and identifies damage or unusual wear (FMCSA tips for a successful move). These points concern international and U.S. interstate moves respectively; verify the requirements for your route and contract.
30. Keep a first-day box within reach
Pack basic necessities—such as bedding, toiletries, a few kitchen items, and everyday household supplies—in a clearly marked box you can access first. Royal Mail suggests keeping essentials available so you do not have to open many boxes immediately. Keep medication, documents, valuables, and other personal essentials in your separate do-not-pack area.
