How to Make Accurate Crosscuts with a Table Saw or Miter Saw

Use a miter gauge or compatible sled for table-saw crosscuts, keep the rip fence clear, support the work, and check a test cut before repeating it. Compare a miter saw by capacity, support, portability, and the work you need to do.

For an accurate table-saw crosscut, guide the board with a miter gauge or compatible crosscut sled—not freehand—and keep the rip fence clear of the workpiece. Support long stock, make one test cut, and check it with a square before repeating the setup. A miter saw is another option when its capacity and support suit the board; neither tool is inherently more accurate without proper setup and workholding.

How to set up a table saw for a crosscut

  1. Check the saw manual first. Follow its instructions for blade setup, guards, safety equipment, and adjustments. Disconnect the saw before making adjustments if the manual directs you to do so. Verify that the blade is aligned to the table and that the miter gauge or sled travels correctly in its slot. Do not assume one blade-height setting applies to every saw. Delta’s 36-725T2 manual gives the procedure for that saw; use the manual for your own model.
  2. Choose a guide. For an ordinary crosscut, use the saw’s miter gauge, holding the stock firmly against its fence. A purpose-built crosscut sled can provide a larger supporting surface and hold stock square to its fence, which can be useful for small parts or repeatable work. Use only a guide compatible with your saw.
  3. Keep the rip fence out of contact with the board. A crosscut piece must not be trapped between the fence and blade. SawStop’s November 2025 EU Professional Cabinet Saw manual warns that this can bind the workpiece and increase kickback risk. Rockler likewise prohibits using the rip fence with its sled.
  4. Arrange support before switching on. Support long or large stock at table height, with the support positioned so it does not obstruct the gauge or sled. The board and offcut should remain level rather than tipping or binding as the cut finishes.

When using a miter gauge, feed the gauge and stock steadily through the blade while keeping the board registered against the gauge fence. Delta’s manual describes moving the stock slightly away from the blade and returning the gauge only after the cut; follow the sequence and cutoff-clearing procedure specified for your saw. Keep hands outside the blade path and use the guards and workholding arrangements required by the manual.

When a crosscut sled makes sense

Use a sled when its support surface, hold-down, or fence arrangement suits the work and it fits the saw. Compatibility is model-specific: Rockler’s manual for its crosscut sled limits that sled to cabinet and full-size contractor saws with a standard 3/8-inch-deep by 3/4-inch-wide miter slot, and requires at least 4 1/4 inches between the blade and miter track. Those dimensions apply to that product, not to sleds generally.

The same Rockler manual prohibits using its sled on portable saws, with dado blades, or for compound cuts. Check the instructions for the specific sled you own; another sled may have different requirements or limits. Do not use the rip fence to trap stock against the blade while operating a sled.

Make a test cut and check the result

Before making a series of cuts, make one test cut using the intended setup. Check the cut face with a reliable square. If it is out of square, stop and inspect whether the blade is aligned to the miter slot, the gauge or sled fence is square, the stock stayed seated against the guide, and the support kept the work level. Correct the cause and make another test cut before proceeding.

When making repeat cuts, arrange any stop so it cannot trap the offcut between the stop and blade. There is no single stop arrangement established for every saw and jig, so use the saw and jig manuals and check the actual geometry of your setup. No universal accuracy tolerance or blade-height number is established for these tools; verify the result required by your job rather than relying on an assumed figure.

Table saw or miter saw: which should you use?

A miter saw is designed for crosscutting, while a table saw can crosscut with a suitable gauge or sled and also serves other cutting tasks. Choose based on the actual workpiece and setup rather than assuming one type always produces a more accurate cut.

What to compare Table saw Miter saw
Workpiece width and capacity Check the capacity of the saw and the chosen gauge or sled for the intended cut. Check the capacity of the specific saw, especially for wide boards and compound cuts.
Support and control Use a miter gauge or compatible sled; support long stock without blocking its travel. Register the stock against the saw’s fence, hold it securely, and support long stock.
Repeatability and setup A sled or gauge can provide a repeatable guide when correctly fitted and set; verify with a test cut. Plan a safe, repeatable stop arrangement for the particular saw and workpiece; verify with a test cut.
Angle or bevel cuts Check the saw, guide, and jig manuals for the intended cut and their limits. Check the actual saw’s capability and capacity for the required angle or compound cut.
Portability and other work Consider available shop space and whether you also need the table saw for other operations. Consider whether the saw’s setup and portability suit the work location and cutting needs.

For either tool, safe stock support, stable workholding, an appropriate sharp blade, and a verified setup matter. There is no controlled head-to-head accuracy comparison established here, so let the cut’s width, available support, required angles, portability, and your other shop tasks decide.
