The University of Florida IFAS discusses sodium bicarbonate as a preventative measure for some plant diseases—not aphid control—and notes that it has limitations and can injure plants. For aphids, start with water and monitoring; if an infestation needs treatment, choose a product labeled for both the pest and the plant.
Why baking soda is not the answer for aphids
The reviewed guidance does not establish baking soda as an aphid-killing treatment. Advice about bicarbonate for plant disease should not be repurposed as an insect-control recipe: it addresses a different problem and may cause plant injury. Avoid spraying an improvised baking-soda mixture on aphids or foliage as though its effectiveness were proven. University of Florida IFAS guidance on natural pest and disease management
Check whether aphids need treatment
Inspect tender new growth and the undersides of leaves for clusters of small insects. Sticky honeydew and distorted leaves can also indicate aphid feeding. Aphids draw juices from plants, but many mature plants tolerate light to moderate populations without serious harm. Monitor the plant before deciding to treat; the presence of a few aphids does not automatically call for spraying. UC IPM guidance on aphids
Remove aphids from sturdy plants with water
For a small infestation on a sturdy plant, use a forceful stream of water to knock aphids off the foliage. Recheck the plant and repeat physical removal as needed. This avoids applying a pesticide and is a practical first response when the plant can tolerate the spray.

Support natural enemies
Lady beetles and lacewings feed on aphids. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides that can harm these beneficial insects. Ants may protect aphids from their natural enemies, so their presence can help explain why aphid numbers persist. UC IPM guidance on aphids

When to use insecticidal soap or horticultural oil
If aphids continue to cause damage, UC IPM identifies insecticidal soaps and oils as less-toxic pesticide options. Use only a product whose label permits application to both the specific plant and aphids, and follow its directions rather than substituting a homemade baking-soda solution. | Option | How it works | Coverage and repeat treatment | Plant cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water spray | Physically dislodges aphids | Direct the spray at infested growth; inspect again and repeat as appropriate | Use on sturdy plants that can tolerate a forceful spray |
| Insecticidal soap | Contact treatment for aphids reached by the spray | Thoroughly wet infested foliage, including leaf undersides; repeat applications may be needed | Some plants are sensitive. Do not apply to drought-stressed plants or in very hot conditions |
| Horticultural oil | Contact treatment for aphids reached by the spray | Thoroughly wet infested foliage, including leaf undersides; repeat applications may be needed | Some plants are sensitive. Do not apply to drought-stressed plants or in very hot conditions |
| Conserve natural enemies | Allows predators such as lady beetles and lacewings to feed on aphids | No spray coverage required; continue monitoring | Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides that can harm beneficial insects |
Contact sprays work only when they reach aphids, so curled leaves can shelter insects from treatment. If appropriate for the plant, prune and discard badly curled, infested leaves. Test and apply products according to the label, since sensitive or stressed plants can be injured under unsuitable conditions. UC IPM guidance on aphids
