How to make your own solder flux: the documented basic approach is to dissolve suitable purified rosin (colophony) in an alcohol solvent to create a liquid flux. The available manufacturer and industry sources do not establish a validated home mixing ratio, shelf life, or equivalence to a commercial product, so this is a formulation principle—not a tested recipe. Rosin flux also creates hazardous soldering fume, and residue may affect reliability; both need to be part of your decision.
What solder flux does
Flux helps molten solder wet metal by addressing surface oxides and related tarnish. Without suitable flux, solder may bead up or fail to form a sound connection. Flux chemistry matters: a formulation that works for one soldering job may be unsuitable for another.
This article concerns electronics soldering. Evidence for rosin-and-alcohol formulations in electronics does not make them appropriate for plumbing, structural metalwork, or every alloy.
How a rosin-and-alcohol flux is formulated
Purified rosin dissolved or dispersed in alcohol is a documented electronics-flux concept. Kester describes its 1544 flux as purified Grade WW rosin in an alcohol solvent system, while the OECD’s 2014 report on chemicals used in the electronics industry describes rosin fluxes in water or alcohol, including isopropyl alcohol. These sources support the ingredients, but not a validated household method or ratio.

- Flux for soldering DIY electronics projects including Car Audio, Stereo & Hifi, Computers, RC Vehicles, Drones / FPV, Musical Instruments, Gaming Consoles, Model Railroad, Arduino / Raspberry Pi, etc.
The OECD report says typical preparations contain 2–5% rosin. That is an industry-context figure, not a DIY recommendation: it does not specify a home procedure or show that a mixture at that concentration will perform reliably for your work. Kester notes that solids percentage affects the activity and residue of its product, so concentration is a performance variable, not a universal setting.
The sources do not establish how quickly a household mixture dissolves, how to prepare it as a tested process, how long it keeps, or whether it matches a named commercial flux. Do not assume that it does. If you choose to make a liquid, use rosin whose grade and intended use are suitable for electronics and follow the solvent container’s handling instructions. Keep alcohol away from ignition sources.

Choose flux by application, activity, and cleanup
Homemade rosin solution is not interchangeable with every commercial flux. Compare the intended application, flux activity, residue behavior, required cleaning, and whether you can control solder fume effectively.
| Flux type | What the sources establish | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Rosin in alcohol | Kester documents purified Grade WW rosin in an alcohol solvent system; OECD describes rosin flux in alcohol or water. | DIY ratio, shelf life, and equivalence to a commercial product are not established. |
| Activated rosin flux | Kester says its 1544 is intended for cases where non-activated or mildly activated rosin fluxes are not active enough. | Greater activity is not a reason to treat it as interchangeable with a simpler rosin solution. Consider residue and cleaning requirements. |
| Water-wash flux | Indium describes water-wash fluxes and notes that some are made active on the basis that residues will be removed after soldering. | Use only where the assembly and specified post-solder cleaning process are compatible. |

Plan for residue and cleaning
Flux residue is not automatically harmless or automatically a problem; the chemistry and the assembly determine what to do. The FDA’s technical discussion, written for medical-device production, says unremoved active rosin flux may contribute to corrosion and electrical failures, and that rosin residues can cause connection-reliability issues in some circumstances. Treat that as a reliability caution, not a universal rule that every hobby board must be cleaned in the same way.
Match the cleaning method to the actual flux chemistry and assembly materials. In particular, do not assume that a cleaning process suitable for one rosin flux will also suit an activated or water-wash formulation. The FDA’s discussion is available in Evaluation of Production Cleaning Processes for Electronic Medical Devices—Part 1, Contaminants.

Control soldering fume
Rosin-based flux produces fume when heated. The UK Health and Safety Executive identifies rosin-based solder flux fume as a significant cause of occupational asthma in Britain and warns of serious health effects. Its guidance recommends considering rosin-free flux where appropriate, avoiding overheating the soldering iron, using fume extraction, and keeping your head out of the plume.
Ordinary room ventilation should not be treated as equivalent to extraction. The right extraction setup depends on the work area and equipment; the cited guidance does not validate a particular consumer extractor or filter. Read the HSE’s electronics soldering guidance and solderer guidance before working with rosin flux.

When making your own flux is the wrong choice
- You need a known, repeatable activity level or a documented residue and cleaning process.
- The assembly is sensitive to contamination or failure, and you cannot verify that your homemade mixture is compatible.
- You cannot provide effective fume extraction or keep yourself out of the fume plume.
- The job is plumbing, structural metalwork, or another application beyond the electronics-flux evidence described here.
In those cases, choose a commercial flux specified for the application, follow its instructions, or use a suitable rosin-free alternative if appropriate. A commercial label does not remove the need to check compatibility, cleaning, and fume controls.
