A small wood-and-blade jig or a manual PET bottle cutter can help control the cut; the resulting strip is suitable for crafts and light-duty tying, not for lifting or safety-critical use.
What you need
- A clean, dry PET beverage bottle with its label removed.
- A simple cutter: scrap wood, four screws, a snap-off knife blade, and a screwdriver. A saw and marker help prepare and lay out the wood, as described in Instructables’ DIY guide.
- Alternatively, a ready-made manual PET bottle cutter. It provides a guided blade arrangement without requiring you to build the jig; check the specific tool’s instructions before use.
- A utility knife or box cutter, ruler or straight edge, and cutting mat if you plan to cut strips by hand rather than use a jig, as outlined by WikiHow.
Use a stable work surface. The blade is sharp and exposed during this process.
Build or choose a cutter
A homemade jig holds a blade at a fixed position so the bottle wall feeds past it as you rotate the bottle. The Instructables design uses scrap wood, four screws, and a replaceable snap-off blade. Prepare the wood, mark the blade position, and secure the blade with the screws as shown in that design. Keep the cutting edge firmly seated and make sure the jig cannot shift while in use.
A commercial manual PET bottle cutter is another option if you want a preassembled guide. One 2020 vendor-style newsletter says its manual cutter can make “about 4-5 metres of strong cord” from a 0.5 litre bottle; that is a seller claim, not an independently measured or guaranteed yield. Choose based on the cutter’s instructions, how securely it can be fixed, and the project you have in mind.

Cut the bottle into a continuous strip
- Wash and dry the bottle, then remove its label so the cutting area is clear.
- Prepare a starting edge at the bottom. Use a utility knife to open the bottle wall and make a short initial strip; cut away from your body and keep your free hand out of the blade’s path.
- Position the bottle against the cutter’s guide so the blade catches the starting strip. Secure or clamp the cutter before you begin pulling the bottle through.
- Pull steadily while rotating the bottle. The wall should unwind into a spiral strip. Keep your fingers behind the cutting edge and do not force the bottle if it catches or the jig moves.
- Stop when you reach the neck or the bottle no longer feeds evenly. Set the blade aside safely and inspect the strip for breaks or uneven sections.
Strip width and consistency depend on the bottle’s shape, the blade position, and how evenly you rotate and pull. A Museo de Ciencias ZAMÁ project describes a strip approximately 0.5 cm wide for its particular homemade cutter; that is an example, not a universal setting or guaranteed result: Museo de Ciencias ZAMÁ’s project.
Safety and realistic uses
Keep hands clear of the blade path, stabilize the cutter before feeding a bottle, and make initial cuts away from your body. Children should have an adult handle all blade work. The sources describe crafts, tying, and rope-like utility projects, but give no verified breaking strength or load rating. Use the strip only for low-stakes craft or light utility; do not rely on it for climbing, lifting, fall protection, or any life-safety purpose.

There is no guaranteed length: bottle size and shape, cutter setup, and strip width all affect the result. The available figures are source-specific and not controlled measurements.

Accepted plastics vary by location, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
