Open World: Why Are We Makers?

“Maker” can unite people around creativity and shared skills, yet the term can obscure differences in practice and whose work gets recognized.

“Maker” can be a useful invitation to experiment and share skills, but it is not a settled identity or a synonym for working with high-tech tools. In Liam Grace-Flood’s 2018 essay “Open World: Why Are We Makers?”, making spans craft, repair, education, digital fabrication and community practice—and the label itself raises questions about whose work is visible and valued.

What does “maker” mean?

There is no single definition. Grace-Flood presents “maker” as an umbrella for people who create, adapt, learn and share across fields including open-source work, appropriate technology, craft, art, education and digital fabrication. That breadth can bring people together, but it can also blur meaningful differences between their aims and practices.

The phrase “Maker Movement” is similarly unsettled. It may describe hobbyist experimentation or STEM education; it may also express a larger ambition to democratize education, innovation and fabrication. Will Holman, associated with Open Works, cautions against assuming that the word signals a unified cause: “Using the term ‘movement’ implies a centralized political or unifying ideology, and I don’t think either of those things exist.” Grace-Flood’s essay presents that as one perspective, not a definitive account of everyone involved.

Maker Media’s inclusive definition, as quoted by Grace-Flood, says: “The Maker Movement embraces innovation, creativity, and learning to improve our communities and create a better future. Tinkerers, educators, parents, and professionals are included, because we are all Makers.” The welcoming spirit is clear, but calling everyone a maker does not by itself resolve who gets recognized or whose work receives attention.

Why can the label exclude as well as welcome?

Grace-Flood notes that Make: audience surveys described a readership that was affluent, educated and mostly male. The essay supplies no figure or survey year, so this is a qualitative observation—not a statistic that establishes the composition of makers generally. It nevertheless points to a broader question: does a culture’s public image reflect all the people doing creative and practical work?

The essay challenges a tool-centered image of making, in which Arduino boards, quadcopters and 3D printers stand in for the whole activity. These are examples associated with maker culture, not requirements. Expensive equipment can enable projects, but celebrating it as the central measure of making risks making participation appear dependent on access to tools, time and money.

It also matters what kinds of work are treated as inventive. Drawing on Deb Chachra’s critique, Grace-Flood questions the assumption that making is inherently more valuable than repair, analysis or caregiving. Chachra writes that “the cultural primacy of making, especially in tech culture” is informed by “the gendered history of who made things” and whose work was shared publicly rather than confined to home. The point is not to diminish building or invention, but to resist a hierarchy that overlooks maintenance and care.

What counts as a makerspace?

A makerspace is not one standard model. Grace-Flood’s essay describes spaces ranging from social clubs and craft studios to business incubators, open-source communities and high-tech labs. They can differ in purpose, tools, culture and governance; the name alone cannot tell a visitor what happens there or who feels welcome.

When evaluating or comparing spaces, the essay points to Maker Tour’s topics: goals, uses, pedagogy, documentation, business model and specificity. Practical questions that extend those topics include:

  • Who governs the space, and who has a voice in its decisions?
  • Which communities does it serve, and what do participants actually do there?
  • What tools and materials are available, and are there ways to participate without costly equipment?
  • How are skills taught and knowledge shared? Is project documentation accessible?
  • What sustains the space financially, and how does that shape access and priorities?

These questions are a way to understand a particular space, not a validated scoring system. A workshop’s equipment list is only one part of its character; its purpose, practices and relationships matter too.

Is making different from design thinking?

They can overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Katie Krummeck, described in the essay as then directing SMU’s K-12 Maker Education Project, distinguishes design thinking as a specific process for developing solutions to human-centered problems. Making, in her account, is broader: a range of tools and practices for realizing and externalizing an idea, whatever process produced it. A person can make without following a formal design-thinking method.

Why might making matter beyond the finished object?

Grace-Flood’s interpretation emphasizes making as potentially collective and civic. People can share skills, build community, respond to local needs and create alternatives to what markets or centralized institutions provide. That is a vision of what making can do, not proof that every project or makerspace produces those outcomes.

The essay is reflective rather than a scientific survey, and it was published in 2018. It is best read as an invitation to examine the meanings attached to making—not as a current census of makers or makerspaces. Its most useful challenge is to ask both what people create and what the culture around creation chooses to notice.

What does making mean to you?

Grace-Flood ends with a personal question: “What does making mean to you? Is it something you identify with?” You do not have to adopt the word to value practical creativity. Whether your work involves building, repairing, teaching, maintaining, caring or sharing knowledge, the label is less important than noticing what the work contributes—and whose contributions are seen.
