The right choice depends on the pool’s size and shape, which surfaces need cleaning, the debris it collects, and whether you prefer managing a power cable or recharging a battery. PCWorld’s 2026 picks include cordless options for large and small pools, a corded model, and a separate surface skimmer; each suits a different job.
How to choose a robotic pool cleaner
Start with the actual pool, not a “best overall” label. Check the manufacturer’s stated pool-size fit and confirm whether the exact model cleans the floor, walls, waterline, or steps. Those are separate capabilities: a floor-and-wall cleaner does not necessarily clean the waterline, and a surface skimmer targets floating debris rather than submerged surfaces.
Then consider the debris and the routine you are willing to keep. Large leaves can challenge a small cleaner or fill a basket quickly; fine debris calls for attention to the filter and its cleaning requirements. Pool geometry and steps can affect navigation, while retrieval, emptying the basket, rinsing filters, and storing the unit determine how convenient it is in practice.
Corded or cordless?
| Type | What it changes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Cordless | No floating power cable during cleaning, but the robot has a finite battery runtime and must be recharged. | Rated pool capacity, runtime, charging arrangement, and whether one cycle is enough for your pool and debris load. |
| Corded | Continuous power avoids a battery runtime limit, but the owner must handle and store the cable. | Cable length, cable management, retrieval features, and storage space. |
Maytronics describes this same basic trade-off in its 2026 cleaner comparison. Neither design is universally superior; the better fit depends on pool demands and your tolerance for cable handling or charging.

PCWorld’s 2026 robotic pool cleaner picks
The recommendations below are PCWorld’s editorial picks, not a universal ranking. Performance assessments and test figures are attributed to that publication; they are not industry-wide benchmarks. Models, specifications, availability, and prices can change, so verify the exact current version with the manufacturer or retailer before buying.
| Use case and pick | What the source reports | Trade-offs and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Best cordless overall: Polaris Freedom Plus | PCWorld reported good cleaning quality, waterline parking for retrieval, and a caddy with contactless charging. Its June 23, 2026 update listed a price of $1,699. | PCWorld cited the high price, a less effective result than the Polaris VRX iQ+, and a remote it found difficult to use. The listed price is a dated editorial snapshot, not a current quote. |
| Large pools: Fanttik Aero X (cordless) | PCWorld described six hours of runtime and a large basket. | The review reported that it could get stuck on steps and be tricky to retrieve and clean up; its control cable also makes storage less tidy. Confirm the current rated pool capacity and consider pool shape, steps, and debris—not runtime alone. |
| Smaller pools: Aiper Seagull SE (cordless) | PCWorld described it as inexpensive and lightweight, with a fit of up to about 850 square feet and about 90 minutes of runtime. | The review said it struggled with larger leaves, needed significant regular maintenance, and failed to park near the wall at cycle end. Recheck current official specifications and whether the maintenance burden suits you. |
| Corded pick: Polaris VRX iQ+ | PCWorld reports a 70-foot insulated power cord, a lift system, and rated its cleaning performance highest among the models it tested. | PCWorld cited expense, a bulky caddy, and cord handling. Its performance judgment applies to its own test pool and comparison, not every pool or test condition. |
| Floating leaves: WYBOT F1 solar skimmer | In PCWorld’s test, it captured about 85 percent of floating leaves; the article says the rest had already sunk. | This is a surface skimmer for floating debris, especially relevant after wind or storms—not a replacement for a cleaner that covers the submerged floor and walls. |

PCWorld’s reviewer describes both real-world debris observation and a synthetic test using about 100 silk craft leaves. Coauthor and reviewer Christopher Null says: “I test robotic pool cleaners in two ways: First, I start with real-world tests by letting debris build up for a few days, I then drop the robot into the water to see how it fares. This isn’t scientific—and it’s seasonally dependent on falling leaves—so I also devised a synthetic test using about 100 craft leaves made from silk.”

Read. Laugh with the kids. The pool stays flawless without you lifting a finger. When it's done, rinse the filter in seconds and click it back in. That's it. No thinking. No maintenance. Just a clean pool, automatically.
PCWorld reported that models it tested collected 80–95 percent of debris depending on how dirty the pool was initially. That is a result from its review and conditions, not a universal performance guarantee or standardized benchmark. The same context matters for the WYBOT F1’s leaf-capture figure: it reflects PCWorld’s test, in which some leaves had already sunk.
Quick Recap
Questions to settle before buying
- Will it fit the pool? Match the current model’s stated capacity to the pool’s dimensions and shape. A long runtime alone does not establish that it can cover a particular pool effectively.
- Which surfaces need cleaning? Check floor, wall, waterline, and step coverage separately. If the main nuisance is floating leaves, consider a skimmer as a separate tool rather than expecting it to clean the pool floor.
- What debris does the pool collect? Consider leaf size, fine particles, basket capacity, and how often you are willing to empty and rinse the cleaner.
- How will you retrieve and store it? Look for practical details such as parking or lift behavior, unit weight, cable or control-cable handling, caddy needs, and where the cleaner will live between cycles.
- What will upkeep involve? Check the exact filter-cleaning routine and whether compatible replacement filters or parts are available for the model and market you are considering.
- Are the price and terms current? Recheck price, warranty, retailer support, and local availability for the exact model variant. The figures above are snapshots from 2026 publisher pages.
