If machine washing is allowed, follow that rug’s specific directions. For Ruggable rugs covered by the manufacturer sources cited here, that means cold water, a delicate cycle and mild, non-bleach detergent. On its two-piece system, wash the cover separately—not the pad—and dry the rug only as its instructions allow.
1. Check the care instructions and rug construction
Before washing, confirm that the label or product guide permits machine washing. Note the permitted water temperature, cycle, detergent and drying method. Also identify whether you have a one-piece rug or a removable cover attached to a separate pad. Do not transfer one brand’s directions to another rug.
Ruggable’s Rug Wash & Care Guide and UK care FAQ give product-specific directions for its rugs; your own rug’s instructions take precedence if they differ.
2. Make sure the washer can handle the rug
A rug can be technically washable but too bulky for a particular household washer. Check the maker’s compatibility chart using the rug’s size and your washer’s capacity. If the rug cannot move freely or the manufacturer says a larger machine is needed, use a suitable commercial-capacity washer rather than forcing it into a home machine.

For example, Ruggable UK’s Washing Machine Guide for Washable Rugs says some rugs require a 14 kg or larger machine, commonly available at a laundrette. That is UK-market guidance for specified Ruggable sizes—not a universal minimum for washable rugs.
3. Prepare the rug as its maker directs
For Ruggable’s two-piece system, separate the washable cover from the Rug Pad. The pad is not machine-washable according to the maker’s care guidance. Ruggable also instructs users to load the washable item with the design side facing out. For another brand or construction, follow that product’s preparation instructions instead.

4. Wash gently, using only permitted products
For the Ruggable products covered by the cited guidance, use cold water, a delicate cycle and mild, non-bleach detergent. Do not use bleach. Fabric-softener rules vary by style, and the maker prohibits it for some styles, so check the instructions for your particular rug before adding it.
Do not add stain treatments or other laundry products unless the rug’s maker allows them. A product that is safe for ordinary laundry is not automatically suitable for a rug’s fibers or backing.

5. Dry completely before putting the rug back
Use only the drying method and heat level permitted by the rug’s care instructions. Ruggable’s cited guidance recommends low heat or air-drying and cautions against high dryer heat. Make sure the entire rug—including any nonslip backing—is completely dry before returning it to the floor.

Common mistakes that can damage a washable rug
- Assuming “washable” is a universal standard: Check the exact model’s label and care guide rather than borrowing another maker’s cycle settings.
- Putting a separate pad in the washer: Ruggable says its two-piece system’s pad is not machine-washable; wash the cover only.
- Overloading the machine: Use the maker’s size-and-capacity chart. Some large rugs need a commercial-capacity washer.
- Using prohibited additives or heat: The cited Ruggable instructions disallow bleach, restrict fabric softener for some styles, and caution against high dryer heat.
- Putting a damp rug back on the floor: Wait until it is fully dry, including the backing.
