The 32 cultivar examples below are drawn from North Carolina State University’s trial database, which lists color class, vigor and flowering time. A trial listing describes a cultivar; it does not mean a local store currently carries it.
What makes poinsettias look like they are blooming?
The colorful parts shoppers often call flowers are bracts—modified leaves surrounding the plant’s small, yellow cyathia. The cyathia at the center are the true flowers. Bracts provide the bold color and patterns that make poinsettias popular for holiday displays. North Carolina Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox describes poinsettias in a range of colors and patterns, not just red.
32 poinsettia cultivars and groups to know
The NC State Poinsettia Trials database currently returns 232 cultivar entries. Its labels describe trial categories, not a count of varieties available at retail. NC State Extension gives a broader estimate of more than 150 cultivated varieties. The table brings together 32 named examples and recognizable color or pattern groups; cultivar names and trial labels are shown as recorded by NC State. See the NC State Poinsettia Trials database for its full, current listings.

Only six entries in the comparison above have trial vigor and timing values established in the cited material; the others are examples named in NC State’s plant profile or broad categories shown in the trial database. The trial records classify timing as early-, mid- or late-season, which can help compare flowering schedules, but does not establish what will be stocked in a given place or season.

How to choose a healthy poinsettia
- Look for foliage that covers most of the stem.
- Choose a plant without wilt or dropped leaves.
- Check that the bracts look fresh and are not faded, torn or discolored.
- Ask a local seller which named cultivars are available; stock varies by seller, region and season, and a trial entry is not a retail stock listing.
These selection checks come from NC State Extension’s poinsettia guidance.
How to keep a poinsettia looking good indoors
- Give it bright light: place the plant in a well-lit spot.
- Water by checking the soil: water when the surface feels dry, then let excess drain away.
- Keep the pot out of standing water: empty water collected in an outer container or saucer.
- Avoid cold exposure and drafts: NC State Extension warns that exposure below 50°F can cause chilling injury and advises covering plants in cold conditions.
- Use a comfortable indoor location: NC State Extension recommends typical winter-home temperatures of 60–68°F.
Overly dry soil can contribute to lower-leaf loss. NC State’s plant profile gives a different temperature range—around 65–70°F—and recommends part shade and avoiding overwatering, so treat the figures as institutional guidance rather than a single precise thermostat target. The profile also notes that sap may cause reactions in people with latex allergies.

Can a poinsettia bloom again next holiday season?
Yes, but getting a plant to rebloom requires managing light as well as routine care. Colorado State University Extension describes poinsettias as short-day plants: autumn’s lengthening nights prompt flowering, while ample daytime light and long, uninterrupted nights support flowering and colored bracts. Its guidance recommends at least 14 hours of darkness nightly beginning around October 1. Read Colorado State Extension’s selecting and planting guidance for the reblooming conditions.
