A good DIY bird bath can be as simple as a shallow dish on a stable surface. Choose a design that holds shallow water, gives birds a secure foothold, fits its location, and can be lifted out for cleaning. These 53 ideas range from repurposed saucers and pedestal baths to compact balcony dishes and optional moving-water features.
Start with a shallow, stable, cleanable design
Birds use water for drinking, grooming, and cooling, so an uncomplicated bath can be useful. For a simple build, National Audubon Society recommends a pan or flower-pot tray no more than 2 inches (5 cm) deep, filled with about 1 to 1½ inches (2.5 to 3.8 cm) of water. Cornell Lab of Ornithology recommends a shallow bath with a gentle slope. Add a few large pebbles or a flat stone as visible footholds, and make sure the finished dish cannot tip easily. Audubon’s DIY birdbath guide and Cornell Lab’s birdbath guidance explain the basic shape and depth.
Place the bath on level ground near shrubs or evergreens, but leave birds room to approach and escape. If free-ranging cats are present, consider a stable raised design rather than an exposed ground-level dish. A removable vessel is especially practical: it can be emptied and scrubbed when water becomes scummy or algae or bacterial mats appear. See Audubon Rockies’ water guidance for siting and care suggestions.
Saucer and tray bird bath ideas
- Terracotta saucer on the ground. Set a shallow plant saucer on level ground and add a flat stone foothold.
- Flower-pot tray in a garden bed. Nestle a shallow tray into the bed while keeping its rim visible and accessible.
- Wide saucer on a low stump. Use a broad, steady stump and check that the saucer sits level.
- Recycled cake pan with a stone. Repurpose a shallow pan and place a flat stone partly in the water.
- Metal tray on a patio paver. Put a shallow tray on a flat paver to create a simple, level patio bath.
- Plant saucer in a low stone ring. Surround a wide saucer with stones for a garden-border look while keeping it removable.
- Removable saucer on an inverted planter. Use a sturdy planter as a base and lift the saucer off for cleaning.
- Two-level saucer arrangement. Set a small upper saucer above a separate lower drinking dish; keep both shallow and stable.
- Pebble-edged saucer. Arrange smooth river pebbles around a shallow saucer, leaving clear access to the water.
- Broad tray beside garden cover. Place a wide tray near dense planting, without blocking birds’ approach or escape.
Bird baths from reclaimed household vessels
- Serving platter on a stable base. Choose a shallow platter and a support that will not rock or tip.
- Low ceramic bowl with a gentle slope. A gradually sloping interior gives birds a range of shallow depths.
- Reclaimed baking dish on non-slip support. Set the dish on a steady surface that resists sliding.
- Enamel pan in a sheltered corner. Use a broad, shallow pan in a protected garden spot.
- Stoneware dish on a patio stand. Pair a shallow dish with a sturdy stand sized to support it securely.
- Reclaimed lid as a ground-level basin. A simple lid can serve as a shallow basin, following the uncomplicated approach described by Audubon Rockies.
- Salvaged planter drip tray. Reuse a shallow drip tray as the removable water-holding vessel.
- Dish blended into a stone border. Partly surround a wide dish with garden stones but leave the rim open.
- Basin with a rock landing. Position a flat rock so it extends into the shallow water.
- Removable dish in a timber surround. Build a rustic-looking surround around a vessel that lifts out without tools for cleaning.
Pedestal and elevated bird bath designs
- Short, broad pedestal. Set a shallow saucer on a wide pedestal with a stable footprint.
- Tray on a sturdy planter base. Secure a tray atop a broad planter base so it cannot slide or wobble.
- Basin on a low stone column. Use a level, stable column sized to support the basin.
- Removable saucer on a garden stool. Keep the dish easy to lift off the stool for emptying.
- Bath on a deck post. Consider this only where local conditions and a sound mounting allow a secure installation.
- Dish on a low table near shrubs. Set a shallow dish on a steady table with nearby cover.
- Raised saucer with a weighted base. Pair the saucer with a broad base that resists tipping.
- Detached bowl on a simple pedestal. Make the basin removable so washing does not require dismantling the support.
- Shallow bath on a balcony stand. Choose a stand stable for the balcony surface and accessible for regular care.
- Stump-mounted tray with a considered location. Set the tray on a stable stump where birds have nearby cover and an escape route, as advised by Audubon Rockies.
Naturalistic baths for planted borders
- Basin nestled in groundcover. Keep the rim clear so birds can reach the water and you can remove the vessel.
- Rock-edged saucer in a flower border. Use a few stones to integrate the saucer without enclosing it.
- Pebble-lined scrape with a removable dish. Use the surrounding pebbles for a natural look while retaining a lift-out water container.
- Basin beside shrubs or evergreens. Place it near cover while preserving a clear approach, following Audubon’s placement advice.
- Rain-catching hollowed-boulder concept. A rain-catching hollowed boulder is a naturalistic alternative noted in Audubon’s yard guidance.
- Saucer partially recessed in gravel. Sink the look of the dish into gravel but keep its removable vessel accessible.
- Open dish among smooth stones. Surround the bath with stones without obstructing the birds’ approach.
- Basin at a native-plant bed edge. Use regionally appropriate planting around the bath and leave access to its rim.
- Dish near grasses and wildflowers. Set a shallow dish beside a small patch that offers nearby cover, an approach described by Audubon Rockies.
- Shallow garden pool or scrape. Consider gradual, pebbled margins; this concept requires site-specific construction decisions rather than a universal excavation or liner specification.
Balcony, patio, and small-space ideas
- Compact saucer on a balcony. Place a shallow saucer on a stable balcony surface where it can be reached for care.
- Removable tray on an outdoor shelf. Use a wide, level shelf and secure the tray against shifting.
- Dish on a patio paver beside a planter. The paver provides a level base, while the planter can offer nearby cover.
- Small saucer with large stones. Add a few large stones as visible footholds, as recommended by Audubon.
- Ground-level tray in a courtyard. Choose a protected, level spot that remains accessible for emptying.
- Bath visible from a window. Put a shallow bath where it can be observed without sacrificing a safe, accessible placement; this is consistent with Audubon’s siting advice.
- Simple dish on an accessible stand. Use a stand that makes refilling and cleaning straightforward.
Moving-water and seasonal variations
- Drip-fed shallow dish. Add a drip feature while keeping the catch basin shallow and removable.
- Small fountain feeding a bathing shelf. Direct water toward a shallow shelf or basin that can still be cleaned.
- Floating solar fountain in a suitable pool. Treat a floating solar fountain as an optional feature, not a requirement; keep the basin clean.
- Still and moving-water zones. Provide a shallow still area beside a small moving-water feature.
- Flat-rock landing beside moving water. Give birds a stable landing near the feature without making the bath difficult to empty.
- Seasonally repositionable saucer. Choose a simple dish that can be emptied, stored, or moved as conditions change.
Drips and fountains are optional design choices, not substitutes for cleaning. National Audubon includes them among bird-friendly yard features in its yard guidance; that guidance does not establish that moving water eliminates mosquitoes, disease, or maintenance. Likewise, the sources cited here do not establish the safety of every reclaimed vessel, paint, sealant, adhesive, or support. Favor a sound, stable vessel and a simple construction you can inspect and clean. ABC Gardening Australia’s build guide also describes a saucer-based approach.
