These 12 free DIY greenhouse plans range from simple covers for a garden bed to walk-in structures and a specialized passive-solar greenhouse for cold-climate winter production. Choose by what you need the structure to do—not by its photo or a claimed low cost. The linked designs differ in how much detail they provide about dimensions, connections, bracing, anchoring, ventilation, and materials, so check those details against your site before buying supplies.
Choose the right kind of greenhouse
A season-extending cover and a winter-production greenhouse solve different problems. Decide first whether you want to protect one bed, work inside a walk-in structure, or grow through a cold winter using a purpose-built solar design.
- Low tunnel or cloche: Covers a garden bed to extend the growing season. It is not a walk-in greenhouse.
- Walk-in greenhouse: Provides access and more growing space, but requires a frame, entry, ventilation, and anchoring suited to the site.
- Deep-winter greenhouse: A specialized passive-solar approach for cold climates, with more involved siting and thermal design than a generic backyard greenhouse.
OSU Extension’s low-tunnel guidance recommends siting tunnels away from shade and orienting them parallel to prevailing wind to reduce wind impact. Those are low-tunnel recommendations, not a universal orientation rule for every greenhouse type: OSU Extension: Low tunnels for season extension in Oregon.

What to inspect before choosing a plan
Dimensions, frame, and connections
Confirm the footprint, spans, member sizes, spacing, joints, bracing, and fastening method. A finished photograph or materials list alone does not establish that a structure is suitable for your local wind or snow. Avoid casually changing member sizes, spans, or spacing: those changes can affect how loads are carried.

Anchoring and site conditions
Check how the plan anchors the structure and whether that approach fits your soil, drainage, exposure, and site layout. Assess shade and prevailing wind, and look up local permit and setback requirements before construction. Rules and structural loads vary by location; neither a plan nor a general extension recommendation can confirm your property’s requirements.
Cover and attachment
For film-covered designs, match the sheet dimensions and fastening system to the plan before purchasing. OSU Extension recommends greenhouse-grade, UV-protected polyethylene as more durable than construction-grade plastic. Cover grade matters: ordinary construction plastic is not an equivalent substitute. See OSU Extension’s Central Oregon growing guidance.

- 【Upgraded Structure Advantage】This greenhouse is enhanced with heavy duty ground spikes and a reinforced aluminum frame to create a strong, secure setup for your garden. The upgraded anchoring system helps hold the structure firmly on different surfaces, while the sturdy frame offers great support in changing weather. Designed for long-term use, it helps you build a reliable growing area for vegetables, flowers, and herbs in your backyard or garden space
- 【Fast, Easy Assembly】The greenhouse uses a slide-in panel system that makes installation more straightforward and efficient. Panels are designed to glide into the frame, reducing the time and effort needed during setup. Clear, simple steps guide you through the process, so you can get your growing area ready more quickly. Once assembled, the structure offers improved steadiness, creating a dependable space for your daily gardening work and seasonal planting plans
- 【Solid PC Panels】High-performance polycarbonate panels provide a balance of strength and light transmission, helping create a stable environment for plant growth. These panels are designed to handle everyday outdoor use while allowing enough light in for seedlings and mature plants. At the same time, they help reduce harsh UV exposure, creating a more controlled setting for gardening. This design works well for both new and experienced gardeners across different regions
- 【Stable Base Options】The base feet of the greenhouse can be anchored in multiple ways to increase stability in wind and snow. You can bury them directly in soil, set them into a concrete base, or attach them to wooden planks using screws, depending on your yard conditions. This flexibility makes it easier to adapt the structure to various outdoor surfaces and climates, helping keep the greenhouse in place and giving added security during changing seasons and weather patterns
- 【User-Friendly Details】Thoughtful details make daily use and maintenance easier. Rain gutters on both sides guide water away from the frame, which helps manage runoff during rain or snow. A smooth sliding door offers easy access when you are carrying trays, tools, or pots, and the lockable handle helps manage entry. Adjustable roof vents support continuous airflow, allowing you to control temperature and humidity levels so your plants receive fresh air and a more balanced growing environment
Ventilation and access
Look for vent locations, hardware, and a practical way to reach and secure vents. A structure that traps excess heat or cannot be ventilated easily may not suit your growing conditions. OSU’s raised-bed cloche instructions advise leaving the upper 6–12 inches of each end open for ventilation in warmer areas; that detail applies to the cloche example, not automatically to every greenhouse: OSU Extension: How to build your own raised-bed cloche.
Match materials and structure to your climate
Do not treat a plan’s location-specific guidance as a universal building specification. OSU Extension’s Central Oregon guidance says supports for greenhouses or high tunnels should be no more than four feet apart for snow-load reinforcement in that region, and says galvanized steel provides better structural support than PVC. The same guidance recommends UV-resistant greenhouse-grade polyethylene over construction-grade plastic. Local conditions may call for different design decisions; verify the loads and requirements for your site rather than applying the Central Oregon spacing everywhere.

OSU’s older Hobby Greenhouse Design Notes catalog illustrates how greenhouse plans can differ in frame and cover materials, including wood, conduit, steel pipe, glass, fiberglass, and plastic film. It also flags one plastic greenhouse plan as suitable only where there is no snow load. The catalog’s historic plan names and ordering details are not current offers, but its limitation is a useful reminder to check a design’s stated load conditions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a deep-winter greenhouse is a different project
A deep-winter greenhouse is not simply a small greenhouse with a stronger cover. UMN Extension describes a design with east-west placement, a steep south-facing glazing wall to collect winter solar energy, and a fan that moves solar-heated air underground into insulated soil or rock thermal mass for later heat release. Its construction manuals are intended for northern cold climates and particular scales of production, not as generic backyard plans. Review UMN Extension’s deep-winter greenhouse guidance before treating this as a DIY weekend structure.

A small cloche example—and what it does not establish
For a simpler bed-covering project, OSU Extension documents a raised-bed cloche measuring 8 by 4 feet. The example uses lumber, 0.75-inch Schedule 40 PVC hoops, 6-mil polyethylene sheet, clips, straps, screws, and basic cutting and drilling tools. These specifications describe that cloche, not a walk-in greenhouse or a universal bill of materials. Its instructions also include the warmer-area ventilation detail described above.
Estimate the whole project, not just the frame
Even when a plan is free to view, a build can require lumber or pipe, greenhouse cover, connectors, fasteners, anchors, tools, a foundation, delivery, and replacement materials. Costs depend on the chosen design, local supply and current prices. Treat historical project estimates in older articles as historical, not as a present-day budget. Before committing, list the materials and quantities from the actual plan, identify what you already own, and get local prices for the remaining items.
Quick Recap
Pre-build checklist
- Choose between a bed cover, a walk-in greenhouse, and a specialized winter-growing structure.
- Confirm dimensions, cut list, connections, bracing, cover details, vents, access, and anchoring in the actual plan.
- Check the intended structure against local snow and wind exposure; do not infer suitability from a photo.
- Verify permits and setbacks, site drainage, shade, and wind exposure.
- Match cover material, sheet dimensions, UV protection, and attachment method to the plan.
- Plan how vents will be reached, opened, and secured.
- Price the complete material list and account for tools, delivery, foundation, and future cover replacement.
