How to clean a pizza stone
- Let it cool completely. Leave the stone in place until it is cool enough to handle. Moving a hot stone into cold water can cause thermal shock and cracking. California Pizza Stones advises, “Always allow your pizza stone to cool completely before removing it from the oven or grill.” Weber likewise says to cool its stone before rinsing.
- Remove loose crumbs. Brush them away with a stiff brush or wipe them off with a cloth.
- Scrape stuck food carefully. Use a plastic scraper or spatula for baked-on cheese or crust. Weber specifically recommends a plastic scraper or spatula for stubborn particles. Avoid forceful chipping or sharp metal tools if the stone’s instructions warn against them.
- Check whether your model permits water. If it does, follow the manufacturer’s directions; do not assume all stones can be rinsed or washed.
- Dry it completely before using it again. Air-dry or towel-dry as the manufacturer directs. Do not put a damp stone into a hot oven.
Can you wash a pizza stone with water?
It depends on the exact stone. Manufacturer instructions differ: Weber allows rinsing its cooled stone with water, while Napoleon recommends hand washing with warm water after the stone has cooled. KitchenAid’s guidance for its countertop-oven stone says brushing is sufficient, with no water or scrubbing required. Frigidaire warns against water or chemicals on its stone. Follow the care instructions for your model; if water is allowed, use it only as directed and do not soak the stone.
Can you use soap or oven cleaner?
Do not use dish soap, detergent, Easy-Off, or other oven cleaners on a porous stone unless its manufacturer explicitly permits them. Porous material can absorb cleaning products and may release them when heated. California Pizza Stones warns against soap, detergent, and oven-cleaning products for this reason. Napoleon also says to avoid soapy water. When the manual does not authorize chemicals, clean mechanically with a brush or suitable scraper instead.
How to remove burnt cheese and stuck-on food
Wait until the stone is completely cool, then loosen the residue with a plastic scraper or spatula. Brush away the loosened pieces. Do not try to restore the surface by aggressively chipping or scraping it: the goal is to remove food debris, not every mark left by cooking.

Why is my pizza stone black?
Darkening and stains commonly develop with use. Weber describes this discoloration as natural seasoning that does not affect performance or taste; KitchenAid and California Pizza Stones also describe discoloration as normal. A dark mark by itself is not a reason to use chemicals or scrub the stone harshly.
Will water make a pizza stone crack?
Cold water on a hot stone can cause thermal shock, so let the stone cool completely before rinsing or washing it. Water exposure rules otherwise vary by manufacturer: some models allow a rinse or warm-water hand wash, while others advise against water altogether. Follow the instructions for your exact stone, never soak it unless its maker expressly says to, and make sure it is completely dry before reheating.

Care varies by stone and appliance
Pizza stones are commonly made from porous ceramic, cordierite, or similar heat-retaining materials, but material alone does not establish the correct cleaning method. For example, Weber lists cordierite for its stone and says to brush clean and rinse with water, without soap. KitchenAid’s countertop-oven guidance calls for brushing alone, while Napoleon permits warm-water hand washing and cautions against soap and scrubbing. The manual for your specific stone or appliance is the controlling guide, including for dishwasher use.
