11 tan paints, compared
Undertone descriptions in this table are editorial guidance based on each color’s published description and typical color direction; they are not manufacturer-assigned formulas. Specific LRV values are included only when officially stated; none of the 11 color pages in the supplied material states a numeric LRV.
| Brand and color code | Undertone and relative lightness | Best room or light condition | Compatible finishes | Sample verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Benjamin Moore Ashen Tan 996 | Restrained, balanced neutral tan; light-to-mid value | Rooms needing warmth without a strong yellow cast; works in mixed daylight | White trim, medium woods, quiet stone, brushed metal | Strong first sample when you want a genuinely neutral tan |
| Benjamin Moore Chowning’s Tan CW-195 | Rich traditional tan; medium value | Dining rooms, studies and living rooms with moderate to good light | Classic white trim, walnut, aged brass, traditional fabrics | Choose for grounded character rather than an airy backdrop |
| Benjamin Moore Lenox Tan HC-44 | Khaki-leaning tan; medium value | Rooms with natural light and substantial woodwork | Oak, rattan, leather, natural stone and warm white trim | Best contender when the room’s wood should feel intentional |
| Benjamin Moore Bridgewater Tan 1096 | Official neutral tan; light-to-mid value | Flexible family rooms and open plans where one adaptable neutral is needed | White trim, natural wood, woven textiles and mixed metals | Useful all-purpose sample; check it beside adjoining rooms |
| Benjamin Moore Warm Tan 2162-30 | Deep golden tan with rich golden undertones and a sunbaked glow; deeper value | Sunny rooms or spaces designed to feel enveloping | Terracotta, warm wood, cream upholstery, aged bronze | Pick when you specifically want visible golden warmth, not a barely-there neutral |
| Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan HC-81 | Versatile balanced tan; mid value | Living areas that need more depth than off-white | Bright white trim, oak, limestone, linen and dark accents | A dependable middle-ground test for an understated but defined wall |
| Sherwin-Williams Canvas Tan | Light tan/khaki direction; light value | Airy rooms, bedrooms and spaces with ample daylight | Natural fibers, pale woods, white trim and simple black accents | Test carefully if you need stronger contrast; it may read very light |
| Sherwin-Williams Accessible Beige SW 7036 | Warm beige-tan bridge between beige and greige; light-to-mid value | Open plans and rooms with variable or cooler daylight | White trim, wood floors, gray-beige upholstery and stone | Good bridge when beige feels dated but gray feels cold |
| Sherwin-Williams Natural Linen SW 9109 | Soft warm neutral; light-to-mid value | Relaxed bedrooms, family rooms and low-stress, layered schemes | Linen, oak, cane, cream and muted green | Favor it for a gentle backdrop rather than a crisp modern contrast |
| Sherwin-Williams Neutral Ground SW 7568 | Light warm neutral; light value | Brightening spaces that still need more warmth than white | White trim, pale oak, light stone and soft metallics | Best tested on every wall because strong light can wash it toward off-white |
| Sherwin-Williams Universal Khaki | Deeper brown-green neutral; medium-to-deep value | Well-lit rooms or intimate spaces where an enveloping wall is wanted | Natural wood, olive, camel leather, cream and aged metal | Use a large sample; its depth and green influence need deliberate coordination |
Which tan is right for your room?
For warm but not yellow
Start with Ashen Tan 996, Bridgewater Tan 1096, Manchester Tan HC-81 or Accessible Beige SW 7036. These are the most useful starting points when you want warmth moderated by a neutral or beige-gray balance. Keep Warm Tan 2162-30 for schemes that intentionally embrace golden undertones.
For light without looking white
Canvas Tan, Neutral Ground SW 7568 and Natural Linen SW 9109 are the lightest directions in the list. Their appearance depends heavily on illumination: bright southern or west-facing light can make them look considerably paler, while shaded walls can reveal more beige.

For a grounded, traditional room
Chowning’s Tan CW-195, Lenox Tan HC-44 and Manchester Tan HC-81 provide more visual weight. Lenox Tan is especially compatible with natural wood; Chowning’s Tan suits a richer, more classic palette.
For an enveloping khaki effect
Universal Khaki is the deepest, most brown-green option here. It needs enough light or intentional contrast so the room does not feel flat. Lenox Tan offers a gentler khaki direction when you want wood and woven textures to remain prominent.

How undertones change the result
Tan is not one color family. A wall can lean yellow, pink, green, brown or muted gold depending on its pigments and surrounding finishes. Hold the sample beside your flooring, upholstery, countertop, backsplash and trim—not against a blank white card. A color that appears neutral alone may look yellow next to blue-gray stone, pink beside rosy beige fabric, or green beside red-toned wood.
Use LRV and orientation to control brightness
Light Reflective Value (LRV) describes how much light a paint reflects. Sherwin-Williams’ guidance places many neutral shades that brighten without becoming stark in an approximate 50–60 LRV range. Because the individual colors above do not have numeric LRV values stated in the supplied material, treat the relative-lightness labels as practical starting points rather than measured specifications.

- Use for a variety of indoor and outdoor project surfaces including wood, metal, plaster, masonry or unglazed ceramic
- Water-based acrylic formula is low odor, resist chips and provides long-lasting protection
- Covers up to 30 sq ft and dries to touch in 30 minutes for quick project completion
- Gloss finish provides a fresh new look for surfaces, goes on smoothly and provides excellent hide
- Prior to application sand surfaces with 180/200 grit sandpaper, then wash with a degreaser, allow the surface to dry and apply paint
- North-facing rooms: They receive the least direct natural light and can make tans appear cooler. Warmer undertones and adequate lightness help counter that effect.
- South- or west-facing rooms: Stronger warm light can intensify yellow or gold. Sample golden colors such as Warm Tan 2162-30 at several times of day.
- Low-light rooms: Deeper tans need stronger natural or layered artificial light, plus trim or furnishings that provide contrast.
- Open plans: Check the color where walls meet adjoining rooms; a tan can shift noticeably beside a cooler gray or a bright white.
Sample before you commit
- Buy a physical sample pot or a large peel-and-stick swatch for every finalist.
- Place samples on more than one wall, including the wall that receives the least light.
- Leave surrounding trim, flooring, counters and fabrics visible; do not judge the color in isolation.
- Observe in morning, afternoon and evening light, with the room’s usual lamps switched on.
- Move the sample beside permanent finishes and across adjoining walls before choosing.
- Purchase full-size paint only after the sample works throughout the day.
Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams both explain that screen and print reproduction can differ from applied paint, and changing light alters perceived color. A manufacturer color page is therefore a starting point, not a guarantee of the finished wall.

Coordinating trim and finishes
- White trim: Clean white increases contrast and can make a tan appear warmer; softer white reduces the jump between wall and woodwork.
- Natural wood: Lenox Tan, Bridgewater Tan, Natural Linen and Manchester Tan support oak and other organic finishes, but always compare against the exact stain.
- Stone and tile: Pull a sample next to the dominant undertone in the stone. Gray stone can expose yellow; creamy stone can make a neutral tan look flatter.
- Metals and textiles: Aged brass, bronze, leather, linen and woven fibers reinforce warm tans, while blue-gray fabrics may cool the appearance.
