For 2026, designers are leaning toward homes that feel personal, expressive, tactile, and genuinely lived in—not rooms that follow one mandatory style. Color, vintage pieces, soft curves, layered surfaces, restorative rooms, and spaces made for gathering are recurring directions. The nine trends below draw on designer surveys and U.S. search data; those sources indicate interest and expectations, not a rulebook for every home.
1. Personal, lived-in rooms
The broadest shift is away from overly curated rooms and toward homes that show how their occupants actually live. House Beautiful’s 2026 report emphasizes personality, sensibility, and nostalgia across home categories. The practical idea is not to make a room look unfinished; it is to combine useful, comfortable choices with objects and details that have meaning to the people who live there.
House Beautiful’s 2026 Home and Design Trend Report describes this direction.
2. Bold color and maximalist expression
ASID’s 2026 outlook describes a move away from quiet luxury toward saturated color, playful silhouettes, and visible personality. IKEA’s U.S. style guide names Joycore décor and Floral Daydream among its four trends. These are distinct publisher-specific labels, but both point toward interiors with more visual character.

Expression does not require filling every surface. A vivid room can start with one strong color, a patterned textile, or a collection of meaningful objects, then grow only if the combination feels right.
ASID’s 2026 Trends Outlook and IKEA U.S.’s 2026 Style Guide offer different perspectives on expressive design.
3. Color-drenching and rich color
Color-drenching—using one color across multiple room elements, such as walls and trim—continues to attract designer interest. The 1stDibs 2025 survey found that 33% of respondents selected chocolate brown as a top anticipated color for 2026, while 21% anticipated burgundy for 2026, compared with 7% for 2025. These are designers’ expectations, not measurements of how many homes have adopted the colors.
The palette is not limited to dark shades: the 1stDibs guide also points to butter yellow, cornflower blue, baby pink, and pistachio. For a lower-commitment start, test paint samples in the room’s actual light before extending a color across walls and trim.

4. Antiques and vintage with a story
Older pieces bring variation in material, finish, and form that can keep a room from feeling like a matching set. In the 1stDibs 2025 survey, 36% of items sourced on average for a project in 2025 were vintage or antique; 85% of designers sourced vintage pieces made between 1920 and 2000. The survey also found that 63% of designers employed antiques made before 1920 in its 2026 survey, up from 56% in 2024.
These figures describe surveyed designers’ sourcing, not the share of all household furnishings that are old. For a home project, a single vintage table, mirror, or light can add character without requiring a whole-room commitment. Check condition, dimensions, and whether restoration is needed before buying.
5. Curves and soft geometry
Rounded furniture and less rigid forms offer a visual counterpoint to rectilinear cabinetry and architecture. In the 1stDibs 2025 survey, 43% of designers identified curvy or irregular-shaped furniture as a 2026 trend. Houzz’s U.S. searches also rose for scalloped tile—more than tripling—and wave tile, up 38%, in January–March 2026 compared with January–March 2025. Searches for arched range hoods rose 177% over the same period.

6. Wallpaper and tactile wall finishes
Walls are becoming more than a backdrop. The 1stDibs guide describes designers planning wallpaper for entire rooms, including ceilings; 35% of designers named wallpapered ceilings as a trend expected to grow in the 2025 survey. Houzz reported U.S. search growth from January–March 2025 to January–March 2026 for sandstone (257%), linen wallpaper (104%), seagrass wallpaper (94%), Venetian plaster (94%), and limewash interior paint (53%).
Wallpaper can introduce pattern across a room or overhead, while plaster-like finishes and limewash add surface variation. Before choosing, consider how permanent the finish should be, how much wall area it will cover, and whether the surface needs to be easy to clean. Removable wallpaper can be a more reversible way to test a pattern; textured finishes may call for more care in application and upkeep.

Alongside expressive brights and pastels, earthy neutrals remain a visible direction. Houzz reported that U.S. searches for rust colors rose 178%, chocolate brown 153%, mushroom 69%, sage 55%, taupe 50%, and cream 44% in January–March 2026 compared with January–March 2025. These are search increases, not designer-survey percentages or proof of completed renovations.
Rust, brown, and sage can bring warmth to a room without requiring a full palette change. Pairing a new shade with existing floors, counters, or woodwork helps reveal whether it belongs in the space before making a larger commitment.

8. Wellness and nature at home
Restorative design extends beyond the look of a room to how it supports daily routines. IKEA identifies restorative design as a macro trend influencing interiors. Houzz reported U.S. search increases of 164% for “wellness room,” 139% for “calming,” 112% for “biophilic design,” and 68% for “spa” in its January–March 2026 comparison with the same months in 2025.

A restorative space need not be a dedicated room: a quiet reading corner, a place for stretching, or a connection to natural light and plants can serve a purpose within an existing layout. The useful starting point is to decide what activity the space should make easier, then plan for its light, storage, and everyday use.
9. Rooms for play and connection
Homes are also making room for shared activities. Houzz’s U.S. searches for “mahjong room” rose nearly 20-fold in January–March 2026 versus January–March 2025; “card room” rose 129%, “board game room” 45%, and “bibliothèque” 191%. These figures show search interest, not how many households built dedicated rooms.
A flexible version can work in a multipurpose space: a table that serves meals and games, accessible shelves for books or board games, or seating arranged to support conversation. Storage and layout matter as much as the activity itself; IKEA’s 2026 guide includes separate ideas around storage and balance.
Quick Recap
How to apply the trends without overcommitting
- Start with the room’s job. Decide whether the priority is gathering, restoration, storage, or a visual change before selecting a trend.
- Match the commitment to the element. Paint samples and a movable accent chair are easier to change than wallpaper across a room, ceiling finishes, tile, or built-ins.
- Consider upkeep and durability. Ask how a finish will handle cleaning and daily wear, particularly on high-use surfaces.
- Use one new element to test personal fit. A color sample, vintage piece, or curved accent can show whether a direction suits the home before it spreads to larger areas.
- Keep the evidence in perspective. The 1stDibs figures come from a designer survey about sourcing and anticipated trends; Houzz’s figures compare U.S. searches in January–March 2026 with the same months in 2025. Neither is a universal forecast for an individual home.
