The most reliable way to get rid of silverfish is to make the places they hide less damp and less accessible, then remove their food and shelter. Fix leaks and condensation, clean and declutter likely hiding spots, seal gaps, and use traps to monitor what remains. No single treatment guarantees they will never return; pesticides are a conditional next step, not a substitute for fixing the conditions that attract them.
Why silverfish appear indoors
Silverfish favor humid, sheltered areas, which is why sightings often occur in bathrooms, basements, storage spaces, or near plumbing. Moisture is a habitat clue, not a precise humidity threshold for every home. They can also feed on dry foods and starch-containing materials, including paper products. A damp stack of papers or an undisturbed storage area can offer both food and shelter. Virginia Cooperative Extension’s guidance on silverfish and firebrats and the University of Maryland Extension’s overview describe these food and habitat concerns.
Seven ways to control silverfish
1. Find and correct moisture sources
Check for plumbing leaks, condensation, standing water, and damp rooms with poor ventilation. Repair leaks and improve ventilation; use a dehumidifier if a room remains damp. Moisture reduction is central to longer-term control because it makes common hiding places less suitable. UF/IFAS Extension’s silverfish guidance describes silverfish as associated with humid environments.
2. Vacuum crevices and storage areas
Vacuum where you see insects or signs of activity, including cracks, edges, and storage areas that are safe to reach. Remove dust and debris that can conceal insects or provide food. Vacuuming is a physical control measure listed by UF/IFAS; it works best alongside moisture correction and reducing clutter, rather than as a whole-house cure.

3. Reduce paper and fabric clutter
Remove unnecessary piles of paper, cardboard boxes, and other stored clutter, especially in cool, damp areas. Keep important paper materials in dry conditions and avoid leaving them in undisturbed storage near known activity. Less clutter means fewer sheltered places to inspect and clean.
4. Seal dry foods in containers
Store flour, cereal, pasta, pet food, and similar dry goods in tightly sealed containers. Clean pantry shelves and promptly remove spills or crumbs. Protecting food helps address one potential food source; it does not replace fixing moisture or removing hiding places.

5. Seal cracks and openings
Close gaps around pipes and other openings, and seal accessible cracks where insects may hide or move between spaces. Use an appropriate sealant for the location. Sealing can reduce access to sheltered areas, but it will not resolve a dampness problem or eliminate insects already hidden elsewhere.
6. Use traps to monitor and catch stragglers
After addressing moisture, food, and access, traps can help catch remaining insects and show whether activity continues. The National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) describes a simple jar trap: cover the outside of a lidless glass jar with masking tape so silverfish can climb up and fall in. Treat traps as monitoring and limited physical control, not proof that every insect has been removed.

7. Escalate cautiously if activity continues
For persistent or heavy activity, first look again for untreated damp areas and secluded hiding places. If you use a pesticide, choose one whose label permits use against silverfish in the intended location, and follow its directions and precautions exactly. Keep children and pets away from treated areas as the label requires. Product registrations and availability can change; verify the current label before use. The EPA’s pest-control safety guidance explains why the label governs where and how a product may be used.
UC IPM advises against using foggers for silverfish. It also notes that if control has not occurred after two or three weeks, activity may be coming from untreated areas. That interval is a diagnostic clue, not a guarantee that a particular treatment should work by then. If the source remains unclear or activity persists despite correcting conditions, consider a qualified pest-management professional. UC IPM’s silverfish and firebrat guidance discusses physical controls, water-source reduction, and escalation.

Choose a response that fits the activity
| Situation | Best first focus | Exposure and upkeep |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional sighting | Correct dampness, clean likely hiding places, and use traps to monitor. | These steps avoid pesticide exposure but require follow-up and moisture correction. |
| Repeated activity in a particular room | Inspect that room for leaks, condensation, clutter, dry-food access, and gaps; address each relevant source. | Cleaning and sealing take effort; moisture correction may require ongoing ventilation or dehumidification. |
| Heavy or persistent activity, or no clear source | Recheck secluded harborages and untreated areas; consider a qualified professional. Use a labeled pesticide only if appropriate for the site. | Pesticide use adds exposure considerations and must follow the product label; professional inspection may help locate hidden activity. |
These are practical response categories, not a guaranteed ranking of products or a promise of eradication by a set date. The EPA’s IPM principles describe an approach that monitors, prevents, and controls pests, prioritizing effective lower-risk measures before escalating when needed.
Quick Recap
What to do if silverfish keep appearing
- Revisit damp spaces, plumbing areas, storage zones, and other places that were difficult to inspect initially.
- Check that dry foods are sealed and that paper or cardboard clutter has not accumulated again.
- Use traps to see whether activity is concentrated in one area or continues elsewhere.
- If choosing pesticide, verify the current label for the pest and site; do not apply a product in a way the label does not allow.
- Seek professional inspection when the source is not apparent or activity remains persistent or heavy.
