The Best Time to Prune Roses for Better Blooms

Prune repeat-flowering bush roses in late winter as growth resumes, but wait until after flowering to prune once-blooming roses. Timing varies by rose type and local climate.

For many repeat-flowering bush roses, prune in late winter as growth begins. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) gives February or March as a typical UK window; in northern and colder areas, it advises waiting until March. The right time depends on the rose: once-flowering varieties are generally pruned after they bloom so you do not remove the older growth carrying their flowers.

Choose the timing by rose type

Identify the rose before you cut. Flowering habit and growth form can help if you do not know its variety. The month guidance below is chiefly for UK seasons; elsewhere, use the local equivalent of late winter and check regional advice when frost or growing conditions make timing uncertain.

Rose type When to prune Key distinction
Hybrid tea and floribunda bush roses Late winter, as growth resumes. The RHS gives mid-February in southern England and March in northern or colder areas. Floribundas are generally left with more buds than hybrid teas. RHS guidance
Repeat-flowering climbing roses Winter, usually December to February in the RHS guidance. Tie in new shoots and shorten flowered side shoots as appropriate. RHS guidance
Rambling roses Late summer, after flowering. Ramblers usually have one main flowering period, often around June. RHS guidance
Once-flowering shrub and old garden roses After flowering. They flower on older wood, so routine pruning before they bloom can remove flowering growth. RHS guidance; University of Illinois Extension
Repeat-flowering shrub roses Late winter, as growth resumes. Some need a lighter cut than modern bush roses. RHS guidance
Groundcover roses Often little or no routine pruning; when needed, prune in late winter. Some shaping can follow flowering. Many need only light pruning. RHS guidance

Why the flowering cycle matters

Once-flowering roses are the key exception to the late-winter rule. They bloom on older wood, so pruning before their flowering period risks cutting off stems that would have carried flowers. Illinois Extension advises pruning old once-blooming garden roses after flowering; the RHS similarly recommends after-flowering pruning for once-flowering shrub roses and late-summer routine pruning for ramblers.

For repeat-flowering modern roses, late-winter pruning is a practical way to support healthy, vigorous growth and flowering. The RHS says pruning helps roses “grow vigorously and flower well each year,” but the guidance does not establish a particular date or cut that guarantees bigger blooms or a specified increase in flower count.

How to make the cuts

  1. Use sharp, clean secateurs for ordinary small cuts. For larger stems, the RHS recommends loppers or a pruning saw. Wear gloves when handling thorny roses. RHS general pruning tips
  2. Remove dead and diseased stems, along with spindly or crossing growth where appropriate.
  3. Cut just above a bud. The RHS specifies 5mm (¼ inch) above the bud for its general guidance; make a clean cut without damaging the bud.
  4. For modern bush-rose flower stems, use the class-specific reference. Illinois Extension advises cutting back to an outward-facing bud above a leaf with five or seven leaflets. Do not treat that reference as a universal rule for every rose group.

Use local seasons, not a borrowed month

The February-to-March examples come from RHS guidance for UK conditions: mid-February in southern England and March in northern or colder areas. Illinois Extension describes spring pruning for repeat-flowering modern roses and after-flowering pruning for once-blooming roses. In another hemisphere or climate, follow seasonal cues—late winter near the resumption of growth—rather than translating UK month names directly. If local frost patterns make the window unclear, consult a regional extension service.
