Designers expect 2026 living rooms to feel more personal, layered and tactile: think vintage finds, pattern, mixed metals and statement lighting. These are design forecasts, not a checklist every home needs to follow. Start with a small, reversible change, and let your room’s layout, maintenance needs and budget determine what belongs.
What is shaping living room design in 2026?
The six directions below come from designer commentary in ELLE Decor’s January 13, 2026 trend roundup, alongside the broader signals in a 1stDibs survey of designers. They describe what designers expect or source for projects—not a representative count of what households have adopted. Different roundups select and name trends differently, so treat these as ideas to adapt rather than universal rules.
1. Vintage pieces with a collected feel
Rather than furnishing a room entirely from one matching collection, designers expect more vintage and antique pieces mixed with current furnishings. Jason Saft links some of that interest to price pressure on new goods, but vintage is not automatically cheaper: condition, restoration, delivery and seller details all affect the real cost.
In the 1stDibs 2026 Designer Trends Survey, respondents reported that an average of 36% of the items they sourced for a given project in 2025 were vintage or antique. That is a designer-project sourcing figure, not a share of consumer purchases. The survey also reported that 85% of designers sourced vintage pieces and that antique sourcing rose to 63% in its comparison for the 2026 survey.

To try the look, choose one focal piece—such as a side table, mirror or occasional chair—and keep surrounding furnishings simpler. Before buying, check dimensions against the room and doorways, inspect wear and repairs, and confirm what the seller includes in delivery.
2. Pattern layering, led by one motif
Pattern-on-pattern can connect curtains, wallpaper, upholstery and cushions, but it works best when the prints have a clear relationship. Designer Shea McGee recommends: “The key is thoughtful pairing—let one hero pattern lead and support it with softer companions.” A large floral, for example, can lead while a smaller stripe or a quiet texture repeats one of its colors.
In the 1stDibs 2026 survey, maximalism and eclecticism were named among aesthetics expected to remain popular by 39% and 38% of respondents, respectively; 22% named floral and botanical motifs. Those are survey responses about design expectations, not forecasts of household adoption.

For a low-commitment test, use two patterned cushions or a small textile before changing curtains or wallpaper. Keep one motif dominant, vary the scale of supporting patterns, and repeat a color so the combination feels deliberate. Wallpapered ceilings and color drenching are more committed extensions: 35% of 1stDibs survey respondents cited each as a rising trend.

Tufted upholstery and fringed curtains or lampshades add shadow, movement and texture without relying on a bold color. Designer Jonathan Adler describes tufted furniture as “tailored yet comfortable.” The detail can work at different scales, from a tufted sofa to a fringed shade or one upholstered accent.
If replacing seating is not practical, try a cushion, footstool or shade first. Check how fringe will fare with children, pets and frequent cleaning, and follow the care guidance for the material. A small tactile accent is easier to change than a large upholstered piece.

4. Metals mixed with intention
Designers are pairing warm finishes such as brass and gold with silver, including polished or patinated surfaces. Olive Ateliers’ designers also point to combinations of pewter, aged brass, iron and nickel. These are design opinions, not measured adoption rates.
Mixing finishes looks considered when each has a reason to be there. Repeat a finish at least once—perhaps brass in a lamp and frame, with silver in a small object—rather than introducing many unrelated metals in a single cluster. Frames, lamps and decorative objects let you test the mix without changing built-in hardware.
5. Oversized, sculptural lighting
Large pendants, sculptural sconces and oversized floor lamps are being treated as functional art as well as illumination. Brownstone Boys designers Jordan Slocum and Barry Bordelon put it simply: “Lighting is becoming a focal point.” A statement fixture can anchor a seating area, but its scale and placement need to suit the room.

Before choosing one, check ceiling height, walking paths, door swings and the fixture’s clearance above furniture. A pendant may require electrical work; confirm the existing box and wiring can support the installation with a qualified electrician. A portable floor or table lamp can test the visual effect without committing to a new ceiling fixture.

Shea McGee uses “Hollywood Cottage” as a shorthand for a blend of influences, not a formal design category. Her ingredients include warm neutrals, seagrass rugs, slipcovered sofas, linen drapes, blue-and-white accents, silver and vintage-inspired florals. The result aims for polish without looking overly staged.
Several elements also appear in Ideal Home’s 2026 living-room forecast, including blue, washed linen, earthy browns, curves and low-profile furniture. You do not need the full scheme: linen drapes or blue-and-white cushions can introduce the mix while existing furniture stays in place. Check fabric care requirements before choosing linen for a high-use seat or a home where spills are likely.

How to choose a trend without remaking the room
For a construction or renovation project, decide first whether you are changing a movable layer or a fixed part of the room. A cushion, lamp or side table is easy to revise; wallpaper, new wiring and built-in work have greater cost, disruption and permanence. Use these checks before committing:
- Room function: Keep routes through the room clear and make sure the seating arrangement supports how people actually use it.
- Scale: Measure furniture and fixtures, including clearance, before ordering or installing.
- Upkeep: Consider cleaning and wear for vintage finishes, linen, tufting and fringe.
- Personal fit: Pick one direction that complements what you already own instead of adopting every forecast at once.
- Commitment: Test the effect with a movable accent before taking on upholstery, wallpaper or electrical changes.
Other 2026 coverage points to curvy or irregular-shaped furniture, which 43% of 1stDibs survey respondents identified as a trend, as well as wicker or rattan (27%), skirted seating (24%) and irregular rugs (21%). These survey findings offer additional possibilities, not requirements for the six looks above.
