Identify the model first, then use the mechanism it specifies. In nearly every documented method, the lock must already be open with its current or factory combination. The four mechanisms are a shackle-position reset, a dedicated reset tool, a reset lever, or removable combination wheels.
How do I reset a Master Lock?
Find the model number on the lock, packaging, or instruction sheet before changing anything. Do not apply a shackle, lever, or reset-tool procedure to an unidentified model. Use the comparison below to identify the likely method.
| Lock format or models | Precondition | Reset mechanism | Supplied tool needed? | Verification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 875/975, ProSeries and similar shackle padlocks | Lock open with its current or factory combination | Rotate and press the shackle into reset positions | No | Check the digits at the indicator line before locking |
| 175, 176, 177, 178 and 179LH-style padlocks | Lock open with its existing combination | Combination-changing tool | Yes; model-compatible tool | Return and remove the tool, then test the new combination |
| Resettable cable locks and some key safes | Lock or cable unlocked | Reset lever | No | Keep the new digits fixed while returning the lever, then test |
| 1520D, 1523D, 1524D and 1534D | Lock open | Remove and reinstall combination wheels | No | Align red marks with the Master Lock logo and test before scrambling |
How do I change the combination on my Master Lock?
1. Shackle-position reset: 875/975, ProSeries and similar padlocks
- Open the lock using the current or factory combination.
- Turn the shackle 90 degrees to the first reset position.
- Push the shackle down into the lock body until it clicks.
- On models that require a second position, turn the shackle another 90 degrees.
- Set each dial to the desired combination at the indicator line.
- Pull the shackle up and confirm that every dial still shows the intended digits.
- Close the lock and scramble the dials only after the new combination has been verified.
Some models use only one of the shackle positions; follow the instruction sheet for the exact model rather than forcing the shackle.
2. Dedicated reset tool: 175/176/177/178 and 179LH-style models
- Open the lock with the existing combination.
- Insert the supplied combination-changing tool fully into the reset opening.
- Turn the tool to the reset position.
- Set the dials to the new combination.
- Return the tool to its original position and remove it.
- Test the new combination several times while the lock is still open.
The tool must be fully depressed. Master Lock’s 179LH instructions warn: “IF THE COMBINATION CHANGING TOOL IS NOT FULLY DEPRESSED A LOST COMBINATION WILL RESULT.” Do not remove or rotate it partway through the reset.

- Reinsert the cable, confirm that it latches, and scramble the numbers.
Key safe: The lever direction depends on the model. For example, push the 5400D/5401D lever left and down, the 5406D lever left and forward, and the 5404DHC lever up and right. Set the digits while the lever is in the model’s reset position, return the lever as directed, and test before closing the safe.

- Keep the red marks aligned with the Master Lock logo.
- Install the wheels in the positions for the new combination.
- Replace the metal end cap and reinstall the shackle.
- Test the new combination while the lock is open, then scramble the wheels.
How do I reset a Master Lock without the old combination?
The documented reset procedures require the lock to be open with the current or factory combination. They do not establish a universal, legitimate way to open a lock after its combination has been forgotten. Do not force a reset mechanism or treat another model’s procedure as a bypass. Use Master Lock’s model-specific support route or a qualified locksmith, and be prepared to provide the model number and proof that you are authorized to access the lock.

Why won’t my Master Lock reset?
- The model uses a different method: Confirm the model number before trying a shackle, tool, lever, or wheel procedure.
- The lock is not fully open: Most methods cannot be initiated while the shackle, cable, or safe door is locked.
- The shackle is in the wrong position: On shackle-reset models, rotate it to the specified first position and press it down until it clicks; use the second position only when the model calls for it.
- The reset tool is not fully inserted: On tool-based models, incomplete depression can prevent the change and may cause the combination to be lost.
- The dials moved during the reset: Align digits exactly with the indicator line or logo and keep them still while returning a lever or tool.
- A wheel, cap, or cable was reassembled incorrectly: For removable-wheel locks, verify the red marks, wheel order, end cap, and shackle before testing.
- The new combination was not tested: Leave the lock open, set the digits, operate the mechanism repeatedly, and record the combination before securing it.
After the reset
- Verify the combination with the lock open before scrambling the dials.
- Record the new combination and store it somewhere secure; Master Lock recommends keeping a record.
- Keep the model number with that record so the correct procedure is available for a future change.
