This is a historical 2023 comparison. Software releases, macOS support, licensing and prices change, so verify the exact version and current vendor terms before buying.

“Best” here is an editorial judgment based on native support, BIM depth, interoperability, workflow fit, performance considerations, licensing flexibility and ecosystem—not an independent benchmark.
What counts as BIM software for Mac?
Native macOS BIM
Archicad, Vectorworks Architect and the Mac version of BricsCAD run directly on macOS. Exact compatibility still depends on the application release, macOS version, processor architecture, graphics hardware and plug-ins. Graphisoft publishes compatibility by Archicad and macOS version in its compatibility guidance.

Windows BIM on a Mac
Revit belongs in this category. A Mac owner can use Parallels Desktop, another supported virtual machine, remote desktop or a cloud Windows workstation, but “works on Mac” does not mean that Revit has a native Mac release. Autodesk’s Mac guidance describes Windows-based approaches.
BIM-adjacent Mac tools
Rhino, SketchUp and AutoCAD for Mac can be valuable for modeling, drafting or visualization, but they should not automatically be presented as full building-BIM authoring platforms. A viewer or conceptual modeler is not a replacement for coordinated BIM production.
1. Archicad 27 — best overall native Mac BIM
Archicad 27 is the safest default for an architect who wants a serious BIM workflow without leaving macOS. It combines building-model authoring, documentation, schedules, publishing, visualization and coordination, and Graphisoft develops it for both macOS and Windows. Why choose it
- Purpose-built architectural BIM rather than a general CAD package with add-on objects.
- Strong workflows for walls, slabs, roofs, doors, windows, schedules, drawings and model coordination.
- IFC, DWG, PDF and other exchange options for consultant coordination.
- A good fit for residential and commercial practices that want a Mac-first production environment.
What to verify first
- Revit exchanges: opening an RVT or exporting IFC does not guarantee preservation of families, parametric behavior, classifications, detailing or annotations.
- Teamwork, BIMcloud or other collaboration services, including licensing and network requirements.
- Renderer and visualization compatibility with your particular Mac GPU, memory and project size.

Best fit—and poor fit
Choose Archicad for a Mac-first architectural practice, especially when IFC and conventional AEC formats are sufficient. It is a weaker fit when an employer or consultant network depends on native Revit families, central models, Revit cloud worksharing or Windows-only add-ins.

Vectorworks Architect 2023 combines 2D drafting, 3D modeling, architectural objects, data-rich documentation and presentation tools in a native Mac application. It suits practices that move between conceptual design, detailed drawings, visualization and mixed architectural, landscape, exhibition or entertainment work. Why choose it
- Flexible 2D/3D workflow for designers who do not want every task constrained by a conventional building-model paradigm.
- Strong graphic output and documentation alongside BIM data.
- Useful for small and medium-sized practices with varied project types.
- Native macOS and Windows availability.
Limitations to assess
- Confirm that the Architect edition—not a lower-tier Vectorworks product—contains the objects and documentation tools you need.
- Assess structural, MEP, quantity and coordination depth for your project type rather than assuming all BIM capabilities are equivalent across products.
- Project Sharing depends partly on network bandwidth, as Vectorworks notes on its product page.
- Revit-heavy consultant workflows may require agreed exchange procedures and testing.
Vectorworks Architect is the better native-Mac choice when flexibility and graphic documentation matter as much as strict BIM standardization.

3. BricsCAD BIM V23 — best for DWG-centric users
BricsCAD BIM extends a DWG-centered CAD environment with building information and model-based workflows. It is relevant to offices moving from AutoCAD-style drafting that want BIM capabilities without abandoning familiar DWG production.
Why choose it
- Natural fit for DWG-heavy projects, legacy details and CAD-trained teams.
- Potentially attractive to small practices comparing large BIM suites.
- Mac support provides an alternative to Windows-only CAD/BIM deployments.
Mac and Apple-silicon cautions
Do not assume the Mac build has feature parity with Windows. Bricsys documentation for a later V24 release describes macOS support and Apple-silicon operation through Rosetta 2, while noting a native Apple-silicon build was planned at that time. That is not proof of identical V23 behavior. Check the release-specific system-requirements table before purchase.

- Test BIM authoring, point clouds, rendering, visualization, automation, peripherals and collaboration features on the exact Mac hardware.
- Expect large models and advanced visual modes to increase memory and graphics demands.
- Do not treat BricsCAD BIM as an automatic substitute for Revit or Archicad in multidisciplinary delivery.
BricsCAD BIM is the practical recommendation when DWG compatibility is the deciding requirement, not when an office needs the broadest architectural or consultant ecosystem.

4. Revit 2024 on a Mac through Windows
Revit remains the correct choice when a firm, school, employer, consultant network or project standard requires native RVT/RFA workflows. It supports architecture, structural engineering, MEP and construction coordination, but Revit is not a native macOS application.
Ways Mac users access Revit
- Parallels Desktop with Windows; see the official product page.
- Another supported virtualization setup.
- Remote desktop to a Windows workstation or cloud PC.
- A separate Windows computer.
Costs and failure points
- Budget for Windows licensing, virtualization or remote-desktop costs in addition to Revit.
- Apple-silicon Macs may require Windows for ARM; verify the exact Revit release, Windows edition and plug-ins.
- Graphics acceleration, rendering, USB devices, license managers, shared folders, network access and add-ins can behave differently from a conventional Windows workstation.
- Unified memory is shared by macOS, Windows, Revit, browsers, rendering and collaboration tools; a configuration adequate for a small model may struggle with a large multidisciplinary project.
Choose Revit on a Mac when compatibility outweighs native performance and simplicity. If Revit is the center of daily professional work, a dedicated or remotely managed Windows workstation may be less complicated.

Hardware and workflow checks for a Mac BIM setup
- Processor architecture: identify whether the application is native Apple silicon, Intel software translated by Rosetta 2, or Windows software virtualized on ARM.
- Unified memory: account for macOS, BIM, browsers, rendering and—if applicable—Windows running simultaneously. There is no universal RAM figure for both a small residential model and a large multidisciplinary project.
- Graphics: separate viewport performance, real-time rendering, CPU rendering, GPU rendering and ray tracing. A BIM application running on macOS does not guarantee that every renderer or plug-in does.
- Storage: allow room for applications, local project caches, libraries, rendered output and collaboration files on a fast SSD.
- Thermals and displays: thin laptops may throttle under sustained model or rendering loads; external displays increase convenience but not available graphics or memory.
- Network: cloud worksharing, shared libraries and project sharing are sensitive to latency and bandwidth. Vectorworks specifically identifies bandwidth as a project-sharing factor.
Interoperability: formats are not the same as round-tripping

- RVT/RFA: native Revit models and families.
- IFC: openBIM exchange, with possible loss of proprietary intelligence, constraints, materials, classifications or annotations.
- DWG/DXF: drawings, details and legacy CAD information.
- SKP: SketchUp geometry, often used for conceptual or imported context.
- PDF: issued drawings and review documents.
- BCF: issue exchange where the selected coordination tools support it.
- OBJ/FBX and similar formats: visualization and geometry exchange, not complete BIM transfer.
Open a representative consultant file, export a representative model and inspect schedules, classifications, materials, annotations, families and object behavior—not just whether the file opens.
Collaboration, rendering and licensing checks
Collaboration
Compare Teamwork or project-sharing tools, BIMcloud or equivalent services, Autodesk Construction Cloud and Revit cloud worksharing, shared libraries, templates, licensing and network latency. A native Mac authoring tool can still be the wrong choice if the project’s collaboration standard is Windows- or Revit-specific.
Rendering
Check the complete visualization chain: native viewport, real-time engine, CPU or GPU renderer, ray tracing, external render service and Windows-only plug-ins. Compatibility of the BIM authoring application alone is not enough.
Pricing
License terms vary by country, commercial or education status, monthly or annual subscription, named-user or network licensing, maintenance and add-ons. Check the official Archicad, Vectorworks, BricsCAD and Autodesk pages for current regional pricing rather than reusing 2023 figures.

Choose Archicad 27 for the strongest default native-Mac architectural BIM workflow. Choose Vectorworks Architect 2023 for flexible design, drafting and documentation. Choose BricsCAD BIM V23 when DWG is central. Choose Revit through Windows when employer, school or project standards require Revit—and treat Windows access, virtualization, plug-ins and graphics as part of the purchase.
