One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchYou can make a house safer and more comfortable without air conditioning by blocking solar heat, ventilating only when outdoor air is cooler, exhausting indoor heat and moisture, and creating one protected cool room. Fans help air feel less oppressive, but they do not remove heat—and the CDC warns that above 90°F (32°C), a fan can increase body temperature. If your home remains dangerously hot, leave for an air-conditioned public space or cooling center.
Choose the right approach for the conditions

Block heat before it enters
1. Close sun-facing curtains, blinds or shutters
Cover windows before direct sunlight reaches the glass, especially on the south- and west-facing sides (in the Northern Hemisphere). Interior blinds and curtains help; exterior shutters, awnings and shade cloth usually stop more heat because they intercept sunlight outside the glazing. Keep the coverings closed through the hottest part of the day.
2. Add exterior shade or vegetation
Awnings, canopies, shutters and properly placed shade cloth reduce the sunlight hitting windows and walls. Trees and other vegetation can shade the building and lower temperatures around it, although new plantings take time to mature. Keep installations secure and maintain clearance from roofs, gutters and power lines.
3. Consider a cool roof
A cool roof uses reflective materials or a suitable reflective coating to send more sunlight and heat away from the building. It is a building-envelope project, not a quick fix: confirm that the roof type, coating, local climate and warranty allow the treatment before hiring a contractor.
#1 Best Overall
- AIR CIRCULATION: Designed specifically to pull in fresh outside air and circulate it evenly within your room.
- 3-SPEED CONTROL: Choose between Low, Medium, and High airflow settings using the simple manual dial operation.
- AUTO-LOCKING EXPANDERS: Built-in accordion expanders adjust from 22-1/4" to 33" wide and lock automatically for a secure window fit.
- DUAL BLADES: Equipped with two fans to provide a consistent breeze that improves air circulation in your living space.
- MANUALLY REVERSIBLE DESIGN: Draw cool, fresh outside air into your space, or manually turn the unit around in the window to pull warm, stale air out of the room.
4. Improve insulation and air sealing
Insulation slows heat flow through the roof, walls and floors; air sealing limits hot outside air entering through cracks around doors, windows, loft hatches and service penetrations. Efficient windows and well-sealed doors also reduce cooling demand. An energy audit can identify the upgrades that fit your construction and budget.
Ventilate only when it will cool the house
5. Open windows when outdoor air is cooler
Open windows in the early morning, evening or overnight after the outdoor temperature falls. Close them, along with curtains or blinds, before the outside air becomes hotter than the indoor air. Do not open windows when smoke, pollution, high pollen, security concerns or fall hazards make it unsafe.
6. Create cross-ventilation
When conditions are suitable, open windows or doors on opposite sides of the home so air can travel across rooms. Interior doors can stay open to connect the airflow, but close doors to rooms that are already hot or that you want to keep cool. Cross-ventilation is much less useful when outdoor air is hotter or substantially more humid than indoors.

7. Use a window fan as an exhaust fan
Secure a window fan so it blows room air outdoors. Open another window or door on the shaded or cooler side to provide replacement air. The CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health specifically recommends this arrangement; never balance a fan precariously in an opening, and keep the electrical connection dry.

After a shower or while cooking, run exhaust fans that discharge outdoors to remove humid, warm air. Check the termination: a fan that merely recirculates air or vents into an attic does not remove heat from the house and can create moisture problems.
Use fans and appliances intelligently
9. Use ceiling or portable fans for comfort
Fans move air across your skin, which can make you feel cooler without lowering room temperature. Use them only while people are present, and turn them off in empty rooms. CDC guidance says not to rely solely on fans and warns that above 90°F (32°C) a fan can increase body temperature; at that point, move to a cooler location rather than treating a fan as protection.

10. Cook without heating the house
Use an outdoor grill where permitted, prepare no-cook meals, or cook early in the morning or later in the evening. Minimize oven and stovetop use during the hottest hours, and keep lids on pans to shorten cooking time. Follow fire, food-safety and local outdoor-cooking rules.
11. Turn off unnecessary heat sources
Switch off lights you do not need, unplug idle electronics and avoid running heat-producing appliances during peak heat. Chargers, computers, televisions, tumble dryers and similar equipment all release their electrical input as heat inside the home.
Make one room safer and cooler
12. Create a dedicated cool room
Choose the most shaded bedroom or living room, close its door, cover its windows and keep heat-producing equipment out. Spend the hottest hours there rather than moving repeatedly through sunny rooms, kitchens or upper floors. Keep water, medicines and essential supplies in the room so you can remain there comfortably.

Cool your body directly
13. Use water safely
Take a cool shower or bath, apply a damp cloth to your neck and arms, or wear lightly damp clothing. Drink water regularly; do not wait until you are thirsty. People with fluid restrictions should follow their clinician’s advice rather than increasing intake on their own.
14. Wear light clothing and reduce peak-hour activity
Loose-fitting, lightweight clothing allows sweat to evaporate. Move exercise, housework and outdoor tasks to the coolest part of the day, take frequent breaks and rest in the designated cool room.
Know when home cooling is not enough
15. Leave for a cooler place
In hot, humid climates, ventilation may not cool a home effectively; shading, insulation and a cooled public location are more dependable. If indoor heat remains severe, go to a library, shopping centre, cooling centre, shelter or another air-conditioned place. Check on older adults, infants, people with medical conditions and neighbours who live alone. Never leave children, vulnerable adults or animals in a closed parked vehicle.
