There is no single homemade cleaner that is safe for every surface. Check the manufacturer’s care instructions first, especially for stone, flooring and finished wood. Never mix cleaners: vinegar with chlorine bleach can release chlorine gas, and bleach with ammonia can produce chloramine gas. Cleaning removes soil; it does not automatically sanitize or disinfect.
The methods below are tied to specific tasks in the cited sources, not tested or validated as universal formulas. For a job that requires disinfection, use an EPA-registered product that is compatible with the surface and follow its label, including dilution and wet contact time. The EPA also cautions that homemade cleaners typically perform less well than specially formulated commercial products.
Choose a cleaner by surface and task
Use mild soap and water for routine soil when the material maker permits it. Vinegar is acidic and is suggested in some sources for mineral deposits and glass, but it can damage acid-sensitive materials. Baking soda is used in some recipes for gentle abrasion. These methods are not interchangeable, and none should be assumed to disinfect.
- Granite or marble: Keep vinegar and lemon-based cleaners away. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources specifically warns against its citrus-vinegar spray on these stones; Iowa State Extension advises that acidic cleaners may damage granite and recommends a soapy cloth.
- Wood floors: Follow the flooring maker’s finish-specific directions. UF/IFAS says to wring a mop nearly dry, never pour cleaner directly on the floor, and dry wet areas as you clean.
- Food-contact surfaces and cutting boards: Wash with dish soap and water, following the board maker’s care instructions. Vinegar is not a registered sanitizer and is not an adequate sole sanitizer for commercial food settings.
- Unknown or delicate finishes: Check the maker’s care instructions and test any permitted cleaner on an inconspicuous area.

Never mix products
EPA’s direction is clear: “Never mix cleaning products together or add bleach to other chemicals.” Vinegar and chlorine bleach can release chlorine gas; bleach and ammonia can produce chloramine gas. Do not combine cleaners with one another or apply them over residue from a different product. Use one method at a time and rinse as appropriate. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension also warns against mixing vinegar and hydrogen peroxide.
Keep cleaning and disinfection separate
Vinegar is not a registered sanitizer, according to the University of Maine Cooperative Extension. When a task requires an antimicrobial product, choose one registered for that use and follow its label for compatible surfaces, dilution and wet contact time. A surface must remain wet for the contact time stated on the label.
Prepare and store mixtures carefully
EPA’s alternatives handout recommends clean reusable containers, making only what is needed where practical, labeling stored mixtures, keeping them away from children and never using food or beverage containers. Ventilate while cleaning and follow surface-maker directions. For a formulated cleaner, consider products carrying the EPA Safer Choice label; EPA notes that specially formulated commercial products typically perform better than homemade cleaners.
