Other popular ideas—banana-peel “tea,” direct burial around plants, and polishing leaves, leather, or silver—are suggestions with limited evidence, not proven fixes. Here are ten ways to handle peels, with a clear distinction between sound composting practice and tips to try cautiously.
Which banana-peel uses have the strongest support?
Composting is the most defensible choice: University of Florida IFAS Extension lists banana skins as compostable in its composting guide. The other ideas below are practical suggestions or reported household tips; the sources cited do not establish that all ten are effective.
Garden uses: prioritize compost over fresh scraps
1. Add peels to a compost pile
Cut or tear peels into smaller pieces if convenient, then add them to a compost pile along with other suitable organic material. The goal is finished compost—not leaving fresh peels beside a plant. Follow your compost system’s usual guidance for balancing and turning materials.
2. Put suitable scraps in a worm farm or bokashi system
Brisbane City Council includes worm farms and bokashi among options for banana peels and other scraps in its household composting guidance. These are practical disposal routes, not methods shown by that source to outperform ordinary composting. Follow the rules for the system you use.

3. Use finished compost to enrich garden soil
When the peels have decomposed as part of finished compost, apply that compost according to the needs of the garden bed or container. University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources recommends composting rather than placing fresh peels directly in soil; its March 14, 2025 article explains that decomposition can temporarily draw nitrogen from nearby soil and that buried food scraps may attract wildlife.
4. Bury chopped peels only with caution
Direct burial is slower and less predictable than composting. A University of Florida IFAS Extension newsletter says buried peels may take “up to 5 weeks or more” to decompose enough to contribute nutrients; that is a practical estimate, not a universal timeline. If you do bury scraps, chop them, keep them away from vulnerable roots, and consider the risk of attracting animals. The newsletter also notes that plants need nutrients beyond the potassium in banana peels. See Garden Scoop, September–October 2025.

5. Don’t count on banana-peel water as fertilizer
Soaking peels in water and pouring the liquid on plants is often called banana-peel tea, but its fertilizer value is not established. In an Ask Extension response dated June 27, 2024, University of Maryland Extension said it was not aware of research supporting the idea and advised composting scraps and using a soil test to guide fertilization. Use a fertilizer suited to the plant and soil rather than treating peel water as a dependable feed.
6. Treat dried-peel fertilizer as a suggestion, not a complete feed
Drying and crushing peels is sometimes suggested as a way to add them to garden soil. Brisbane City Council describes this as a possible garden use, but the cited guidance does not establish a measured nutrient benefit or show that dried peels can replace balanced fertilizer. Banana peels alone do not supply every nutrient plants need.

7. Try peel scraps under mulch only as a low-evidence option
Brisbane City Council also suggests covering banana-peel scraps with regular mulch to reduce the chance of attracting fruit flies. This is municipal practical advice, not a controlled demonstration of effectiveness. Keep the scraps covered, and choose composting if pests are a concern.
Polishing ideas: reported tips, not verified cleaners
Banana-peel polishing methods appear in household tip lists, but the cited sources do not verify their effectiveness or safety across different materials and finishes. If you try one, test a hidden area first, use a small amount, and stop if the surface changes or residue remains. Choose a product made for the material when the item is valuable, delicate, or difficult to replace.

8. Try the inside of a peel on a leather shoe
This is a reported tip, not an established shoe-care recommendation. Leather finishes vary, so test a discreet patch and wipe away residue. For valuable footwear, use a cleaner or conditioner intended for that leather.
9. Try a peel on one plant leaf
Wiping a leaf with the inside of a peel is also a reported tip, not a proven cleaning method. Test one leaf first; a surface that looks shiny is not necessarily cleaner or healthier. Use a method suitable for the plant if it reacts poorly or residue is left behind.

| Finished compost in soil | UC ANR recommends composting rather than putting fresh peels directly beside plants. | Use compost after it has decomposed, not fresh peel scraps. |
| Fresh burial | IFAS gives a practical estimate of five weeks or more before buried peels may decompose enough to contribute nutrients. | Slow, with possible nitrogen drawdown and wildlife attraction. |
| Peel water or dried peels | Maryland Extension says research support for peel water is not known; dried-peel benefits are not measured in the cited guidance. | Do not treat either as a reliable substitute for soil-guided fertilization. |
Are banana peels good for your skin?
There is no established evidence in the cited medical source that rubbing banana peel on the face helps skin. Cleveland Clinic quoted dermatologist Taylor Bullock, MD, saying, “There’s no scientific evidence to suggest that rubbing a banana peel on your face is going to help,” in its December 15, 2022 article. Don’t treat facial rubbing as a demonstrated skincare treatment.
Likewise, don’t elevate popular claims about teeth whitening, wart treatment, or first aid to recommended uses: the cited sources do not validate them. Healthline’s August 29, 2019 roundup groups many household and personal-care ideas with anecdotal or folk remedies.
