Keep a portable space heater at least three feet from anything that can burn, plug electric models directly into a wall outlet, and turn the heater off whenever you leave the room or go to bed. These precautions apply in homes and work areas: the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates an average of 1,600 fires per year involving portable heaters during 2020–2022, resulting in 70 deaths and 150 injuries annually. Those estimates cover portable heaters as a category, not electric space heaters alone.
1. Don’t put the heater within three feet of anything that can burn
Keep at least three feet of clearance on every side of a portable heater, including from curtains, furniture, bedding, clothing, paper, and other combustible materials. The CPSC’s space-heater safety poster specifies clearance on all sides; the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) also advises keeping anything that can burn at least three feet from heat sources such as space heaters. Measure from the heater itself, not from the edge of its stand or the nearest wall.
2. Don’t plug an electric heater into an extension cord or power strip
Plug an electric space heater directly into a wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord or power strip: the CPSC’s January 2026 guidance says to connect electric heaters directly to a wall outlet, never through either device. Keep the outlet and plug accessible so you can disconnect the heater promptly if a problem develops. This electrical instruction is for electric heaters; fuel-burning models have different hazards and operating requirements.
3. Don’t leave it running while you sleep or when nobody is attending it
Turn the heater off when you go to bed or leave the room. The CPSC poster says, “Never leave the heater operating while unattended or while you are sleeping.” The USFA gives the same practical direction: “Turn space heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.” An automatic shutoff feature does not replace these instructions.

4. Don’t set it somewhere it can tip over
Place the heater on a stable, level surface where it is unlikely to be bumped, knocked over, or obstructed. Avoid locations with foot traffic or where doors, pets, or moving objects could strike it. Follow the placement and operating instructions for the specific heater.
5. Don’t run its cord under a rug or carpet
Keep the heater’s cord visible and out from under rugs or carpeting. A hidden cord is harder to inspect, and placing it beneath floor coverings can trap heat or leave damage unnoticed. Route the cord where it will not be walked on, pinched, or pulled.

6. Don’t use or handle it near water, or when you are wet
Keep the heater away from water and do not touch it while wet. Do not position it where it could be splashed or knocked into water. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model, especially if you are considering using it in a damp area.
7. Don’t ignore a hot cord, plug, or outlet
If the heater cord or plug becomes hot, disconnect the heater and contact an authorized repair person, as the CPSC poster directs. If the outlet itself is hot, contact a certified electrician. Do not keep operating the heater or try to solve the problem by adding an extension cord or power strip.

8. Don’t refuel a fuel-burning heater while it is running or hot
This warning applies to portable heaters that burn fuel, not electric heaters. Turn a fuel-burning heater off and let it cool before refueling, following the instructions for that model. Refueling a hot or operating heater creates a fire risk.
9. Don’t assume fuel-burning heaters have no indoor-air risk
Fuel-burning heaters can pose a carbon-monoxide and indoor-air-pollution hazard if they are improperly vented or combustion is incomplete. Follow the exact model’s instructions for venting and combustion air; do not assume ventilation requirements are the same for every type of fuel-burning heater. These combustion and fuel concerns do not apply in the same way to electric heaters.

10. Don’t skip model instructions or recall checks
Read and follow the manual for the heater you own, including its placement, use, maintenance, and fuel instructions. The CPSC poster directs consumers to check SaferProducts.gov for electric-heater recalls. Check current recall information for your model before use, and stop using a heater that is subject to a recall until you follow the stated remedy.
Why these precautions matter
The CPSC estimates that portable heaters were associated with an average of 1,600 fires, 70 deaths, and 150 injuries per year in 2020–2022. Separately, the USFA estimates 32,200 U.S. home heating fires, 190 deaths, 625 injuries, and $442 million in property loss in 2021; those totals cover home heating fires broadly, not space heaters alone. For 2017–2019, the USFA reports portable-heater fires accounted for 3% of home-heating fires and 41% of fatal home-heating fires. The periods and denominators differ, so these figures describe distinct measures rather than a single trend.
