The best plant gift is the one that fits its recipient’s light, routine, and home—not simply the one that looks best in the shop. These ten options range from flowering favorites to distinctive foliage plants, with notes to help you choose for a real person and a real room.

How to choose a plant that will suit its recipient

Start with the place the plant will live. Indoor light, temperature, and humidity can vary from room to room, so a plant that thrives on a bright sill may struggle in a dim corner. The Royal Horticultural Society’s houseplant guide recommends matching a plant to its conditions rather than treating every home as the same environment.

Then consider how much care the recipient wants to take on. “Easy care” is relative: experience, watering habits, and time all matter. Include a care label or written instructions with the gift. If you would rather let the recipient choose, a gift card to a nursery or garden center is another option, as UVM Extension suggests.

  • For flowers: Choose a flowering plant if the recipient enjoys a seasonal display; choose foliage if they prefer a lasting visual feature without relying on blooms.
  • For uncertain light: Ask where the plant will go, or choose a candidate described for a range of indoor conditions and still confirm its needs.
  • For a pet household: Check the exact plant name in the ASPCA’s toxic and non-toxic plant database. The database is not all-inclusive, and ASPCA cautions that eating any plant material can cause vomiting or gastrointestinal upset in dogs and cats. No plant should be called “pet-proof.”
  • For a winter occasion: Protect tropical plants from prolonged cold on the way home. UVM Extension warns that temperatures below 40°F can damage tropical plants; limit their exposure between purchase and arrival.
  • For an aspiring rebloomer: Ask whether the recipient wants to manage the conditions needed to bring a flowering plant back into bloom. Some popular gift plants take more effort than their initial display suggests.

10 plants to consider as gifts

This is a situation-based shortlist, not a universal ranking: the right choice depends on the recipient’s room, routine, and preferences.

1. Phalaenopsis orchid: a polished flowering gift

A phalaenopsis orchid makes a refined choice for someone who appreciates an elegant flower display. An Associated Press report quoted New Delhi florist Rajiv Kumar describing orchids as long-lasting with proper light and care, and as helping to “express the value of longevity you have for your relationship.” That is a florist’s sentiment, not a guarantee of how long a particular plant will flower. Choose it for someone willing to match its care to the light and conditions it needs.

2. Christmas cactus: seasonal color and attractive foliage

Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera hybrids) offers winter color as well as interesting foliage. The RHS includes it among houseplants to consider, and the Chicago Botanic Garden describes it as popular, attractive-foliaged, and easy to grow. It is a good fit for someone who enjoys a seasonal flowering plant and is willing to learn what encourages it to bloom again: the garden notes that short days and dark nights, or cool temperatures, can prompt flowering.

3. African violet: compact flowers for a small space

African violet (Saintpaulia, now classified within Streptocarpus) is a compact flowering option from UVM Extension’s gift suggestions. Its small scale may suit a desk or shelf, but do not assume it will thrive in every spot just because it is compact. Check the recipient’s available light and share care information with the plant.

4. Peperomia: a foliage plant for less predictable rooms

UVM Extension includes peperomia among plants suggested for a range of indoor light and humidity conditions. That flexibility makes it a candidate when the recipient’s exact setup is uncertain, but it does not mean the plant will thrive in every location. Choose it as a foliage gift, and include guidance for the conditions it prefers.

5. String of hearts: a trailing plant for a well-lit spot

String of hearts (Ceropegia linearis subsp. woodii) has trailing stems and heart-shaped leaves that look appealing on a shelf or in a hanging pot. The RHS says it prefers a well-lit position, so it is better for a recipient with a bright place to display it than for someone seeking a low-light plant. The RHS also advises using peat-free compost in its houseplant gift guide.

6. Hoya: a pet-household candidate that still needs checking

UVM Extension names Hoya among festive indoor plant options it considers pet-friendly. That broad description is not a substitute for checking the exact plant being purchased: Hoya covers multiple species, and ASPCA advises consulting its database by plant name. Consider it for a pet household only after verifying the identity and checking the ASPCA listing.

7. Nerve plant: colorful foliage

Nerve plant (Fittonia verschaffeltii) is a foliage choice with colorful leaves, and UVM Extension names it among pet-friendly options. Confirm the plant’s identity and care needs rather than relying on a general label, and consider whether its growing conditions suit the recipient’s home.

8. Echeveria: a sculptural succulent

Echeveria’s compact rosette form gives it a sculptural look that can appeal to someone who likes succulents. UVM Extension includes it among gift possibilities. It is most appropriate for a recipient able to provide suitable light and succulent care, rather than someone who simply wants a plant for any available corner.

10. Kalanchoe: vivid flowers, with a reblooming commitment

Kalanchoe (Kalanchoe blossfeldiana) is a popular, colorful gift plant with attractive foliage throughout the year, according to the Chicago Botanic Garden. Bringing it back into bloom takes deliberate effort: the garden says bud formation requires roughly 16 hours of darkness daily for about three months. It suits a recipient who will enjoy the initial color even if they do not try to rebloom it.

Match the plant to the occasion and the trip home

For a romantic or celebratory gesture, an orchid or flowering plant can make the gift feel special; for someone who values lasting foliage, consider peperomia, pilea, hoya, or a trailing string of hearts. A seasonal plant can be a memorable choice, but avoid implying that its flowers will return without attention. The Chicago Botanic Garden notes that poinsettias and azaleas are more difficult to rebloom than some alternatives, while Christmas cactus and kalanchoe also need particular conditions to flower again.

Transport matters as much as presentation, especially in cold weather. Keep tropical plants sheltered from prolonged temperatures below 40°F, and minimize the time they spend exposed between the shop and the recipient’s home. If you are unsure about conditions, care preferences, or whether the recipient wants a live plant at all, a nursery or garden-center gift card leaves the final choice to them.
