President Donald Trump announced on March 30, 2025, that the Jackson Magnolia at the White House would be removed, saying its deteriorated condition made it a dangerous safety hazard. The National Park Service later recorded the nearly two-century-old tree as removed and documented the planting of a 12-year-old descendant sapling in its place.
Why was the White House magnolia cut down?
The tree was the Jackson Magnolia, a southern magnolia associated with President Andrew Jackson and located near the White House entrance. In his March 30, 2025 announcement, Trump said:
“The bad news is that everything must come to an end, and this tree is in terrible condition, a very dangerous safety hazard, at the White House Entrance, no less, and must now be removed.”
That explanation is Trump’s stated reason. The contemporaneous Associated Press report attributes the condition and safety claim to him; the available National Park Service records document the removal but do not provide an independent arborist assessment or a separate statistical measurement of the tree’s structural risk.

What happened to Andrew Jackson’s magnolia?
- March 30, 2025: Trump announced that the Jackson Magnolia would be removed.
- 2025: The original tree was removed, according to National Park Service records.
- April 8, 2025: Trump planted a 12-year-old descendant sapling raised at an NPS greenhouse in preparation for the removal.
The NPS commemorative-tree archive lists the original as “Andrew Jackson – Magnolia Removed 2025” and records a separate “Donald Trump – Magnolia 2025” entry for the replacement.
How old was the original tree?
Reports described the Jackson Magnolia as nearly two centuries old. That is a descriptive age, not a published exact count of years. Its importance also came from its provenance and setting: the tree was linked to Andrew Jackson and was designated an NPS Witness Tree in 2006 because it had stood through significant historic and cultural events.

What replaced the historic magnolia?
| Characteristic | Jackson Magnolia | Replacement magnolia |
|---|---|---|
| Historical connection | Southern magnolia associated with Andrew Jackson | Descendant of the Jackson Magnolia |
| Age information | Described as nearly two centuries old | 12 years old when planted on April 8, 2025 |
| Condition and safety | Trump said it was in terrible condition and a dangerous safety hazard; no independent arborist finding is identified here | Raised by the NPS greenhouse in preparation for the replacement planting |
| White House status | Removed in 2025 | Planted at the White House in 2025 |
| Preservation record | Designated a Witness Tree by NPS in 2006 | Continues the tree’s lineage but is not the original Witness Tree |
The replacement therefore preserves genetic and historical continuity rather than the original tree’s age. It is a new planting descended from the magnolia that had occupied the site.

No. The White House grounds included more than one historically noted magnolia. The Roosevelt Magnolia, planted in 1942, was removed in September 2025 as part of the East Wing expansion project. That was a separate tree and a separate removal from the Jackson Magnolia decision announced in March.

What the removal means for the White House landscape
- The original Jackson Magnolia no longer stands at the entrance, so its physical presence cannot be preserved in place.
- The NPS Witness Tree designation records the historical significance of the original rather than transferring that designation automatically to the sapling.
- The descendant planting keeps the Jackson Magnolia’s lineage represented on the grounds while it begins a new growth cycle.
- Because no independent arborist report is identified in the available records, claims about the exact extent of decay or structural danger should be described as Trump’s rationale, not as a separately verified technical conclusion.
