A bungalow is a house form, usually one or one-and-a-half stories, with a low-pitched roof, broad eaves, and often a generous porch. In the United States, many bungalows feature Craftsman details, but “bungalow” and “Craftsman” do not mean the same thing. Roof shape, materials, decoration, and floor plans vary by region and influence.
What features identify a bungalow?
Think of a bungalow as a cluster of common design cues rather than a rigid checklist. The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission describes the common U.S. form as square or rectangular, typically one or one-and-a-half stories, with a low-pitched, overhanging roof and often a large front porch. Roofs may be gabled or hipped.
- Low, broad roof: Wide eaves emphasize the home’s horizontal profile. Rafters, braces, or decorative stickwork may be visible beneath the eaves.
- Porch: A substantial front porch is common. Its roof may rest on square, paired, or tapered columns, sometimes supported by stone or brick piers.
- Gables, dormers, and windows: A front-facing gable or dormer and multi-pane windows are recurring features, though neither is required.
- Practical interior details: Some examples have connected, relatively open rooms and built-ins such as bookcases, china cabinets, or benches.
Exterior materials include wood, brick, stone, concrete block, and stucco. The City of Cleveland Heights also points to the wide porch, low roof, and strong horizontal lines as recognizable clues; its features, like those above, describe patterns rather than requirements for every bungalow.
Is a bungalow the same as a Craftsman home?
No. “Bungalow” describes a house form; “Craftsman” describes a design style or influence. Craftsman detailing is frequently found on American bungalows, but Craftsman decoration was also applied to other modest house forms. Conversely, bungalow houses can draw on Tudor, Prairie, Spanish Mission, or chalet traditions.

Where did the bungalow come from?
The word is associated with Bengal and the term bangala. The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission traces the early form to one-story buildings with verandahs in nineteenth-century India, including travelers’ rest houses called dak bungalows. The Chicago History Museum explains that British colonial experience in India carried the term into later American use.

The familiar American bungalow became prominent in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission places the development of the Bungalow or Craftsman style in California around the turn of the twentieth century, influenced by English Arts and Crafts ideals of handcraft and harmony with the natural setting. It identifies Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene as influential practitioners and notes that they designed Craftsman-type bungalows in Pasadena by 1903.
Magazines, pattern books, builder catalogues, and mail-order house kits helped carry bungalow designs beyond California. The relatively affordable designs appealed to a growing middle class and developing suburbs.

Why do bungalow examples look different by region?
The bungalow form adapted to local materials, lots, climate, and decorative influences. Chicago offers a well-documented regional example, not a national template. The Chicago Architecture Center describes the local version as commonly brick, one-and-a-half stories above a basement, with a low-pitched hipped roof, wide overhangs, a stepped porch, and generous windows. Brick color, dormers, enclosed front rooms, and ornament vary among examples.
The Center says Chicago’s version was adapted around 1910 to narrow standard lots and local weather, with construction expanding over the following decades. Its overview lists original completion dates of 1919–1930. It also reports that more than 80,000 Chicago bungalows existed by the Great Depression, but the page does not identify a publication date for that figure; it should not be read as a current count or a national total.

Chicago’s brick construction and hipped roofs are characteristic of that local pattern, not requirements for a bungalow elsewhere. To compare examples, look at story count and roof shape, porch and column treatment, materials, exposed structural details, interior planning, and the style influences layered onto the form.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you tell whether a house is a bungalow?
Start with the overall shape: is it a relatively low, one- or one-and-a-half-story house with a broad, overhanging roof and a prominent porch? Then consider supporting clues such as visible rafters or braces, a front gable or dormer, multi-pane windows, and built-ins. No single feature proves the label, and not every bungalow has all of them. A careful description can note the form and any apparent style influence separately.
