Choose a TV console by the television’s actual outside dimensions and stand footprint—not its advertised diagonal screen size. Look up the exact TV model, then check that its base fits the console’s usable top, the console is rated for the TV’s weight, and the finished screen height suits your seating.
Measure the TV and its stand
- Find the exact model number. Check the label on the television or its settings, then open the manufacturer’s specifications for that model.
- Record the dimensions that affect fit. Note the TV’s exterior width, stand width and depth, total weight, and any installation clearances. Screen size is measured diagonally, so it cannot tell you the TV’s exact width or the footprint of its base. Sony lists screen width, stand width, and stand depth separately in its model specifications, which are approximate and specific to each model (Sony model specifications).
- Measure the console’s usable surface. Check its top width and depth, excluding overhangs or areas the feet cannot safely rest on, and confirm the TV’s feet or base can sit fully and stably on it.
- Check the console’s load rating. Compare the rating with the TV’s actual weight and follow both manufacturers’ instructions for placement and installation.
Samsung Canada likewise advises checking the TV’s actual dimensions, including its stand, and ensuring it does not extend beyond the furniture’s width or depth (Samsung Canada’s TV stand guidance).
How much wider should a TV console be?
There is no universal console width for each screen diagonal: TVs with the same diagonal can have different exterior widths because of bezel and stand design. Use the exact model’s measurements rather than a size-chart estimate.
As one manufacturer’s recommendation—not a general building or furniture standard—LG Electronics Korea advises at least 50 mm of width clearance beyond the TV and prefers 100 mm or more. In its example, a TV 1,719 mm wide calls for a console at least 1,769 mm wide, with 1,819 mm or more recommended (LG Electronics Korea’s TV stand guide). Apply those figures only as guidance and confirm the fit and stability of your particular setup.

Check console depth, cables, and ventilation
The TV’s stand depth must fit the console top, and the overall arrangement also needs room for cables, airflow, and any required gap from the wall. Don’t assume a deep-looking console is suitable without checking where the TV’s feet land and how connections will be routed.
LG Electronics Korea’s guide recommends 70–100 mm between the TV and wall, at least 100 mm in front, and a console depth of at least 350 mm under its stated assumptions. It cautions that the necessary dimensions vary with stand design and installation. These are LG Korea’s recommendations, not universal clearances; follow the instructions for your TV and account for your room layout (LG Electronics Korea’s TV stand guide).

Choose a height for your seating and devices
Console height determines where the screen sits once the TV is in place. Consider the height of your seat, how you normally sit, and the TV’s dimensions; aim for a screen position that feels natural when viewed from your usual seating, rather than choosing by screen diagonal alone.
LG Electronics Korea gives approximately 1,000–1,100 mm as typical seated adult eye height and recommends aligning the screen center with that range. Treat this as that guide’s reference, not a universal ergonomic rule. Samsung Canada also advises checking that screen height aligns naturally with seated eye level and allowing space for devices such as a soundbar, game console, or set-top box (Samsung Canada’s TV stand guidance).

Check delivery access and secure the setup
Before buying, check whether the TV and console can pass through the doors, hallways, elevators, and stairs on the way to their intended room. Samsung Canada specifically recommends checking the delivery path for large-screen televisions (Samsung Canada’s TV stand guidance).
Tabletop fit does not establish tip-over safety. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Anchor It campaign states: “Televisions that are not wall mounted should still be anchored to the wall.” It also advises placing televisions on furniture designed for them and following manufacturer instructions when securing the TV and furniture (CPSC Anchor It guidance). Use a compatible restraint and follow its instructions as well as the TV and furniture manufacturers’ guidance.
