How to Choose and Install Anti-Tip Brackets That Actually Hold

Anti-tip brackets are inexpensive hardware, but the safety comes from matching the restraint to the furniture, the wall, and the fasteners. Here is how to choose the right kit and install it correctly.

Anti-tip brackets are small pieces of hardware with a serious job: they keep dressers, bookcases, wardrobes, cabinets, entertainment centers, and TVs from falling forward when weight shifts. The best anti-tip bracket is not simply the strongest-looking strap in the aisle. It is the restraint that connects solid furniture structure to solid wall structure with fasteners that match the load and the wall type.

For most homes, the best choice is a two-point furniture anchor kit using steel cable, metal brackets, or heavy-duty webbing straps installed into wood studs. For heavy bookcases, tall wardrobes, oversized dressers, masonry walls, plaster walls, or high-end millwork, we usually step up to metal hardware, larger screws, blocking, or concealed cleats. Hardware costs are modest, usually about $5 to $25 per furniture item in 2026, but installation quality is what determines whether the bracket works when it matters.

The safety case is not theoretical. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated 17,800 emergency-department-treated tip-over injuries per year from 2020 through 2022 involving TVs, furniture, and appliances. CPSC data from January 1, 2013 through July 31, 2023 cited 217 reported tip-over fatalities, with most occurring in homes. A peer-reviewed U.S. injury study estimated 560,203 children under 18 were treated in emergency departments for furniture or TV tip-over injuries from 1990 through 2019, averaging 18,673 children annually.

On our job sites, we treat furniture anchoring like a small structural connection. The visible bracket is only one part of the system. The real questions are: what are you fastening to, how many fasteners are sharing the load, what direction will the furniture rotate, and will the connection still hold after years of cleaning, moving, carpet compression, and drawer use?

What Anti-Tip Brackets Do

An anti-tip bracket, furniture anchor, or furniture restraint connects the upper portion of a freestanding piece to the wall. When a dresser drawer is pulled open, a child climbs a shelf, or a bookcase rocks forward, the restraint resists rotation. It does not make the furniture impossible to move, and it does not make it climb-proof. It reduces the chance that the item can gain enough forward momentum to come down.

Most kits include two attachment points: one fastened to the furniture and one fastened to the wall. The link between them may be a steel cable, nylon strap, webbing strap, rigid metal bracket, or a locking tie. Better kits include screws long enough to reach wood framing and furniture fasteners with a broad bearing surface. Lower-quality kits often fail because the screws are too short, the wall anchor is wrong, or the furniture-side screw is driven into thin backer board.

The most common furniture to anchor includes dressers, chests, changing tables, bookcases, armoires, wardrobes, pantry cabinets, freestanding bathroom cabinets, file cabinets, entertainment centers, and any flat-screen TV sitting on furniture instead of being wall mounted. A piece does not need to look unstable to be worth anchoring. A 30-inch-tall fabric-drawer unit can still qualify as a clothing storage unit under federal guidance if it is freestanding, heavy enough, and has enough enclosed storage volume.

The Main Types of Anti-Tip Hardware

There are three broad categories worth considering: metal brackets, steel cable kits, and flexible strap kits. Each has a place. We do not choose based on marketing language alone; we choose based on furniture weight, wall type, clearance behind the item, and whether the owner needs occasional access behind the furniture.

Rigid Metal L-Brackets

Steel L-brackets are simple, strong, and inexpensive. One leg fastens to the wall, the other to the furniture. They work well for bookcases, utility cabinets, garage storage, shop shelving, and furniture where appearance is not the first concern. They are less forgiving when the furniture sits away from the wall because of baseboards, outlets, carpet tack strips, or uneven floors.

Rigid brackets are a good choice when the furniture has a solid top rail or side panel and can sit close to the wall. They are not ideal for delicate antiques, veneer surfaces, or furniture that needs to be pulled out for frequent cleaning.

Steel Cable Kits

Steel cable kits are one of our preferred options for many dressers, wardrobes, and entertainment centers. The cable allows a small offset from the wall while still creating a strong restraint. Some home-center kits in 2026 advertise all-steel construction, aircraft-grade cable, or high hold ratings; one listed metal kit advertises a 400 lb hold rating. Those numbers are useful for comparison, but the rating only matters if the screws and wall connection are also correct.

Cable kits are usually a strong upgrade over thin plastic ties. They are also easier to inspect because the cable, eyelets, and screws remain visible when the furniture is pulled slightly forward.

Heavy-Duty Nylon or Webbing Straps

Nylon and webbing strap kits are common, affordable, and adequate for many household dressers and bookcases when installed correctly. Basic nylon strap kits often cost about $5 to $12 per item, while better metal bracket or cable kits usually run about $8 to $20. Multi-packs are commonly $10 to $35 depending on quantity and fastener quality.

Flexible straps are useful where the furniture does not sit perfectly flat against the wall. They should be snug, not guitar-string tight. If they are too loose, the furniture can move forward before the restraint engages. If they are too tight, they can bow a light cabinet or damage a thin panel.

Comparison: Which Anti-Tip Bracket Is Best?

Hardware type Best use Typical 2026 hardware cost Strengths Watch-outs
Steel L-brackets Bookcases, utility cabinets, shop shelving, built-in-style storage $5-$15 per item Rigid, strong, easy to inspect, inexpensive Needs close wall contact; visible; less flexible around baseboards
Steel cable kits Dressers, wardrobes, entertainment centers, heavier case goods $8-$20 per item Strong connection, allows small wall gap, durable hardware Only as good as the screws and attachment points
Heavy-duty webbing straps Common dressers, changing tables, bookcases, rental-friendly installations where allowed $5-$12 per item Affordable, flexible, easy to install in pairs Can loosen; plastic parts may degrade in heat or sun
Earthquake-rated straps Seismic zones, tall storage, multi-room safety upgrades $10-$25 per item Designed for lateral movement and repeated loading May require more careful layout and stronger fasteners
Custom cleat or blocking Built-ins, high-end millwork, oversized bookcases, plaster or masonry conditions $25-$100+ in materials before labor Clean appearance, stronger substrate, tailored to the furniture Usually a carpenter or contractor task

For a typical bedroom dresser, we like two independent restraints near the upper third of the case, fastened into studs whenever possible. For a wide bookcase, we usually use two restraints spaced apart, not one in the center. One centered strap can stop a straight pull, but it does less to resist twisting when a child pulls on one side or when the floor is uneven.

How to Match the Bracket to the Furniture

Start with the furniture, not the package. A 28-inch nightstand, a 48-inch dresser, and an 84-inch bookcase do not need the same approach. Height, depth, weight, drawer action, shelf loading, and construction quality all matter.

As a practical rule, anchor any freestanding storage piece that is 27 inches tall or taller, especially if it has drawers, doors, or shelves a child can climb. The federal STURDY Act rule for clothing storage units became effective September 1, 2023. It incorporates ASTM F2057-23 for covered freestanding clothing storage units and requires an anti-tip device meeting ASTM F3096. That rule improved the baseline for new covered units, but it does not remove the need to install the anti-tip device. A kit left taped to the back of a dresser protects no one.

For dressers and chests, attach the furniture side to a solid top rail, rear rail, side panel, or frame member. Avoid thin fiberboard backs. Many back panels are only there to square the cabinet and keep dust out. They are not designed to resist a forward rotation load.

For bookcases and wardrobes, look for a solid top rail or vertical side panel. If the case has a flimsy back and no strong rail, we add an internal cleat or blocking strip. A discreet 1×2 or 1×3 cleat, properly fastened inside the furniture, can give the anti-tip hardware something real to hold. On painted or utility furniture, a surface-mounted cleat may be acceptable. On high-end pieces, we plan the attachment so it is hidden but still inspectable.

For entertainment centers and TVs, the safer move is usually to wall mount the TV or use the TV manufacturer’s anti-tip straps connected to a low, stable console. A flat-screen TV sitting on tall furniture is a poor combination. Keep remotes, game controllers, and toys off the top of furniture so children are not tempted to climb.

Wall Type Matters More Than the Bracket

The wall side is where many installations fail. Drywall alone is not a structural anchor for heavy furniture tip-over loads. A plastic drywall anchor may feel tight when installed, but tip-over force is a prying and pulling load, not just a simple hanging load.

Wood Stud Walls

For standard wood-framed walls, locate the studs and fasten into framing. Most U.S. homes have studs spaced 16 inches on center, though 24 inches on center is also common in some framing. Use a stud finder, confirm with a small pilot hole where appropriate, and drive screws long enough to penetrate the stud, not just the drywall. A common target is at least 1 inch of screw embedment into the stud after passing through drywall and the bracket, though heavier items may call for longer screws based on the kit instructions.

Metal Stud Walls

Metal studs require more care. Light-gauge steel framing does not hold wood screws the same way wood does. Depending on the load, we may use manufacturer-approved toggle fasteners through the stud, attach to blocking, or open a small area to install backing. For apartments and commercial spaces, check lease rules and building management requirements before drilling.

Plaster and Lath

Plaster walls are common in older homes. They can crack if you drive screws aggressively, and stud finding can be less reliable. We predrill carefully, confirm framing, and avoid relying on plaster alone for heavy furniture. Toggle anchors may hold plaster in some situations, but they are not our first choice for tall, heavy dressers or bookcases.

For optimal protection, we recommend using two straps per item.
  • Versatile Use: Our anti-tip furniture anchors are the perfect solution for securely anchoring furniture, such as bookcases, bookshelves, dressers, cabinets and wardrobes, to the wall and protecting against unnecessary incidents with toddlers. Additionally, the anti-tip anchor is detachable, so you can easily remove it when needed for cleaning or furniture removal.
  • High Quality Material: These furniture anchors for baby proofing are crafted from high-quality stainless steel material, offering superior corrosion resistance and lasting protection against rust. Fire and heat resistant, they are sturdier and more durable than plastic straps, providing the perfect safeguard for your baby.

Masonry, Block, and Concrete

For masonry walls, use rated masonry anchors matched to the material: concrete, brick, concrete block, or stone. A standard drywall screw into a plastic plug is not enough for a heavy wardrobe. Masonry work also changes the tool list: hammer drill, masonry bits, dust control, and anchors with published load ratings. In finished spaces, we plan the hole locations carefully because masonry repairs are more visible than drywall patching.

Installation Steps We Use on Job Sites

A careful installation usually takes 15 to 30 minutes per furniture item once the tools are out. Complicated pieces, plaster walls, masonry, or furniture that needs to be emptied and moved can push that to 45 to 90 minutes.

  1. Empty or lighten the furniture. Remove heavy items from upper drawers and shelves before moving anything. This prevents sudden shifting and makes the piece easier to position.
  2. Set the furniture where it will live. Check for baseboard gaps, carpet tack strips, outlet covers, and uneven flooring. Shim if needed so the furniture does not lean forward.
  3. Find structural attachment points. On the furniture, identify a solid rail, side panel, or frame member. On the wall, locate studs or determine the correct masonry anchor locations.
  4. Mark two anchor points when possible. For most dressers, wardrobes, and bookcases, two restraints near the upper third perform better than one. Keep them level and spread apart where the furniture construction allows.
  5. Predrill pilot holes. Pilot holes reduce splitting in solid wood and help screws seat cleanly. They also reduce cracking in plaster.
  6. Use the right screws. Follow the kit instructions, but do not blindly use short screws if they cannot reach framing. Washer-head or pan-head screws often provide better bearing surface where the kit allows them.
  7. Set strap tension correctly. Flexible straps should be snug with minimal slack. Do not over-tighten to the point that a light case bows or the fastener starts crushing the furniture material.
  8. Photograph the finished anchor. We do this for property managers, parents, and future contractors. A quick photo before pushing the furniture back shows exactly what was secured and where.
  9. Reload with weight low. Put heavy contents in lower drawers and lower shelves. Avoid heavy decor, plants, or storage bins on top.

The goal is not a pretty strap. The goal is a load path: furniture frame to bracket, bracket to fastener, fastener to wall framing or rated substrate.

Cost to Buy and Install Anti-Tip Brackets in 2026

Most homeowners can anchor several furniture pieces for less than the cost of one service call if the walls are standard drywall over wood studs and the furniture has solid attachment points. Hardware-only national retail pricing in 2026 generally runs about $5 to $25 per item. Basic nylon strap kits are often $5 to $12. Metal bracket and cable kits are commonly $8 to $20. Multi-packs run about $10 to $35 depending on quantity and hardware quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Professional childproofing or handyman installation commonly runs about $75 to $200 for a small visit or first hour, plus $10 to $30 per additional furniture piece in many markets. Anchoring 5 to 8 items often lands around $150 to $400 depending on travel minimums, wall type, furniture complexity, and whether the pieces need to be emptied or moved.

A general contractor or carpenter service call is often $100 to $250 minimum in many U.S. markets. That cost makes sense when the job involves built-ins, oversized bookcases, wardrobes, entertainment centers, plaster walls, masonry walls, trim work, hidden blocking, or valuable furniture where the attachment needs to be both strong and discreet.

Cost drivers include the number of pieces, wall substrate, stud spacing, need for masonry bits and anchors, baseboard gaps, seismic-risk region, rental-property documentation, antique or veneer furniture, and whether TV mounting is included. If a TV mount is part of the scope, expect the price to move beyond a basic furniture-anchoring visit.

When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro

DIY is reasonable when the furniture is typical household casework, the wall is drywall over wood studs, you own a drill, you can accurately locate studs, and the furniture has a solid rail or panel for attachment. A homeowner with basic tools can usually secure a dresser or bookcase with a quality kit in under 30 minutes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hire a pro when the wall is plaster, brick, block, concrete, tile, or metal stud; when the furniture is oversized or unusually heavy; when the piece lacks a solid attachment point; when the furniture is antique, veneered, or high-end; or when the installation needs to be documented for a rental property, daycare, short-term rental, or multi-family building.

We also recommend professional help for custom millwork. For built-ins and premium storage walls, the cleanest solution is to design concealed blocking and anchor points during construction. Retrofitting visible straps later is often more expensive and less attractive than installing backing while the wall is open.

Safety, Code, and Permit Notes

Anti-tip furniture anchors are generally not a building-permit item for a typical single-family home. You usually do not need a permit to anchor a dresser, bookcase, or cabinet to a wall. That said, code and permit questions change when the work becomes part of built-in cabinetry, structural blocking, commercial tenant improvements, childcare facilities, or multi-family property requirements.

Appliance anti-tip brackets are a separate category. Freestanding ranges commonly have manufacturer-required anti-tip brackets, and inspectors often look for them during home inspections. Furniture restraints are not the same as range brackets, but the principle is similar: a small piece of missing hardware can create a major safety hazard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For new dressers and covered clothing storage units, the federal safety landscape changed with the STURDY Act rule effective September 1, 2023. New covered units must meet stability requirements and include an anti-tip device meeting the applicable standard. Still, homeowners should install the provided device immediately. Recalls continued into 2026, including recall coverage of more than 26,000 fabric dressers sold through major online retailers for violating federal stability requirements and posing tip-over and entrapment hazards.

If you are a landlord, property manager, or short-term rental host, document your installation. Keep product information, photos of anchor points, dates installed, and notes on wall type. Recheck restraints after tenant turnover, painting, flooring work, or furniture moves.

Common Installation Mistakes

The most common mistake is fastening into drywall only. Drywall is a finish surface, not a structural anchor for a tall dresser trying to rotate forward. The second most common mistake is attaching the furniture side to a thin cardboard or fiberboard back panel. That panel can tear away even if the wall side holds.

Using only one restraint on a wide piece is another weak point. A single center strap may look tidy, but two independent restraints spread the load and resist twisting. This matters on wide dressers, double bookcases, wardrobes, and storage units on carpet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

We also see straps left too loose. A loose strap allows the furniture to start moving before the restraint engages, increasing the force on the connection. On the other side, over-tightening can distort light furniture or pull screws through weak material.

Do not ignore the room layout. Heavy items belong low. Avoid placing toys, remotes, candy, or decorative objects on top of tall furniture. Do not put a TV on top of a dresser in a child’s room. If the furniture leans forward because of carpet, tack strip, damaged feet, or an uneven floor, fix that before relying on the bracket.

Finally, do not assume plastic zip-tie style restraints belong everywhere. Heat, sunlight, garages, and utility rooms can age plastic. In those conditions, metal brackets or steel cable kits are usually a better choice.

Our Practical Buying Checklist

For a standard bedroom dresser, choose a kit with two restraints, screws long enough to reach wood framing, and furniture-side hardware that can fasten to a real rail or frame member. For a tall bookcase or wardrobe, choose metal brackets or steel cable restraints and plan for two attachment points near the top. For seismic zones, favor earthquake-rated straps, steel cable, or metal hardware, and secure tall storage in more than one room.

Before buying, check the furniture construction. If the back is thin fiberboard and there is no solid rail, plan for an internal cleat. Check the wall type and buy anchors accordingly. If you are dealing with masonry, use rated masonry anchors. If you are dealing with plaster, budget extra time for careful stud location and predrilling.

The best value is usually not the cheapest strap. It is a kit with durable hardware, clear instructions, and fasteners that fit your wall and furniture. If you cannot confidently locate studs or drill into the correct substrate, pay for proper installation. The hardware may cost $10, but the connection has to work under load.

Bottom Line

The best anti-tip brackets are the ones installed into real structure: solid furniture framing on one side and studs, blocking, masonry, or another rated substrate on the other. For most homes, two steel cable or heavy-duty strap restraints per tall dresser or bookcase provide a strong, practical solution. For heavier storage, seismic areas, masonry walls, plaster walls, or custom work, step up to metal hardware, blocking, or professional installation.

Anti-tip brackets are inexpensive, but they deserve the same respect as any safety connection. Spend the extra few minutes to find the stud, predrill the hole, use the right screws, and attach to a solid furniture member. That is the difference between hardware that looks installed and hardware that can actually do its job.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do anti-tip brackets need to go into a stud?

For drywall over wood framing, yes, the safest standard approach is to fasten the wall side into a stud or installed blocking. Drywall anchors alone are not preferred for heavy furniture because tip-over loads pull and pry, not just hang straight down.

What is the best type of anti-tip bracket for a dresser?

For most dressers, two steel cable or heavy-duty webbing restraints installed near the upper third of the dresser work well. Attach the furniture side to a solid rail or frame member, not the thin back panel.

How much does it cost to install furniture anti-tip brackets?

In 2026, most hardware kits cost about $5 to $25 per furniture item. Professional installation commonly starts around $75 to $200 for a small visit, with many whole-room projects of 5 to 8 items landing around $150 to $400.

Can I use drywall anchors for anti-tip furniture straps?

Drywall anchors are not the best choice for heavy or tall furniture. Use wall studs, blocking, or properly rated masonry anchors whenever possible. If the wall has metal studs, plaster, tile, brick, or concrete, choose fasteners specifically rated for that substrate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do new dressers still need to be anchored under the STURDY Act?

Yes. The STURDY Act rule improved stability requirements for covered clothing storage units and requires an anti-tip device, but the device still has to be installed. A kit left in a drawer or taped to the back does not reduce risk.

Are nylon straps, metal cables, or L-brackets safer for heavy furniture?

For heavy furniture, steel cable kits or metal brackets are usually the better choice. Heavy-duty straps can work when properly rated and installed, but metal hardware is more durable in garages, sunny rooms, seismic areas, and high-load applications.
