But Treehugger’s 2022 feature does not establish that the pictured home operated off-grid: it gives no solar, battery, water, or wastewater capacities or runtime figures.
What is the Plunk Pod?
The Plunk Pod is a particular modular home made by Ontario-based Northern Shield, not a performance claim about shipping-container homes generally. Treehugger reported that the featured unit measured 8.5 feet wide by 53 feet long, with 450 square feet (42 square meters) of floor area. It had been renovated inside and out, insulated, and clad with Hardie paneling. Those are specifications reported for the featured unit, not independently verified current catalog specifications. Treehugger’s September 29, 2022 feature called it an example of how shipping-container housing can be done.
How is the narrow home laid out?
The plan places an open kitchen and living room together, with a mini-L-shaped kitchen. A divided bathroom, corridor storage, and a separate bedroom sized for a queen bed make use of the long, narrow footprint. Sliding patio doors open toward the exterior and could connect to add-on pods. Another exterior door and operable bedroom windows provide additional openings for ventilation.
How are heating and cooling handled?
Treehugger describes a ductless mini-split as the main heating and cooling system, supplemented by baseboard heaters in enclosed spaces such as the bathroom and bedroom. The feature does not identify equipment brands or models, system capacity, energy use, or operating costs, so it is not enough information to size a comparable system or estimate utility needs for another site.

What would an off-grid setup require?
Northern Shield was reported to offer customization that could include a solar trailer to generate electricity and a water tank for an off-grid installation. These are possibilities, not proof that the photographed unit had them installed or could sustain independent operation. The article does not state solar-array output, battery storage, water capacity or treatment, wastewater arrangements, or how long the home could run without utility connections.
Anyone evaluating an off-grid build should get a written specification for the complete system, not just a list of potential add-ons. Confirm what is included, what remains optional, and how the design addresses:

The 2022 feature does not provide answers to those project-specific questions; they need to be confirmed with the builder and relevant local authorities.
What did the featured unit cost?
Treehugger reported an asking price of $123,500 for this particular pod when its article was published on September 29, 2022. That dated figure is not a current quote, and the feature does not establish a delivered price or the cost of off-grid equipment and installation.
