A quilt design wall is a vertical, fabric-covered surface for arranging and rearranging blocks before sewing. The simplest version is flannel or batting hung on a wall; a board-backed panel is firmer and can be portable; a flannel-backed tablecloth can be rolled away. Start by measuring the space and deciding how large a layout you need to see at once.
Choose a design-wall style and size
Measure the usable wall or storage area, then consider the largest quilt layout you want to arrange. The surface can be any size that suits your room. One Scrap Fabric Love tutorial suggests 60 by 72 inches as a useful size, but its author made a 58-by-36-inch finished panel, so those figures are examples rather than a standard. Scrap Fabric Love’s portable design-wall tutorial explains that build.
| Option | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Hanging flannel or batting | A quick setup using a wall or temporary hanging points | May be less taut or firm than a board-backed surface |
| Rigid covered panel | A stable surface, including one that can be moved or mounted | Requires a backing and suitable support or hanging hardware |
| Flannel-backed tablecloth | A surface that needs to roll up for storage or transport | Less rigid than a board-backed panel |
Choose a neutral face—white, beige, or cream—so it does not compete with the fabrics. Flannel or batting has a napped surface that helps pieces stay in place.
Make a simple hanging design wall
This is the quickest approach when you have a wall or another place to hang fabric. Use a piece of flannel or quilt batting large enough for your planned layout. A flannel-backed vinyl tablecloth also works with its flannel side facing out; its backing helps protect the surface when rolled for storage. AllPeopleQuilt’s design-wall guide describes these simple surface options.

- LARGER SIZE FOR BIGGER PROJECTS - The 62" x 72" size provides expanded space for larger quilt layouts, giving you more room to design, adjust, and perfect your projects.
- Measure the intended area and cut or select a neutral flannel sheet, flannel fabric, or batting to fit.
- Attach it using a method appropriate for the surface and fabric. Examples include magnets, removable Command Strips, or push pins where the wall allows them.
- Smooth the material so it hangs flat, then test it with a few fabric pieces before arranging a full layout.
Attachment examples are not universal load ratings: choose a method that suits your wall and the weight of the material. This approach is easy to adapt, but it will not have the firmness of a rigid backing.
Build a rigid covered panel
A panel adds stability and can be moved or mounted. Select backing to fit your space, then cover its front with batting, flannel, or both. Thick cardboard is one low-cost example, but a sturdier backing is preferable if you plan to remove and reuse the panel.

Portable panel
A Scrap Fabric Love build uses thick cardboard, duct tape, polyester batting, and a flannelette sheet. The maker pulls the covering layers taut and tapes them around the back. The reported finished panel measured 58 by 36 inches. The same tutorial reports that cotton batting, polyester batting, and flannelette all held blocks during that maker’s 40-minute comparison; this is an individual project observation, not a controlled independent test or a general ranking of materials. See the portable-panel build for its materials and assembly example.
- Cut the backing to the dimensions you measured for your project space.
- Lay batting, flannel, or both over the front, leaving enough material to wrap around the edges.
- Pull the layers smooth and taut, then secure them on the back with tape or another suitable fastening method.
- Test the completed face with fabric pieces and adjust the covering if it sags or does not hold them as expected.
Wall-mounted panel
For a larger, more permanent installation, Sandy Simmelink’s 2021 Canadian Quilters Association example joins three 1-inch foam insulation boards into a 6-by-6-foot panel, adds wooden strapping, pins flannel over the face, and hangs it on wall-mounted strapping. That build lists 4 yards of flannel. These are details of one project, not requirements for every design wall. Read the Canadian Quilters Association’s 2021 design-wall instructions.

- Mount the panel using hardware selected for its weight and your wall construction. The association’s example uses anchors and screws, but that is not a universal load rating.
Keep the top mounting strapping straight so the panel hangs evenly. If you are unsure whether the wall or hardware can support the finished panel, get appropriate advice before mounting it.

A flannel-backed vinyl tablecloth provides a temporary design wall without committing to a permanent installation. Arrange it with the flannel side facing out, then roll it with the flannel protected by the vinyl backing for storage or transport. Another DIY example describes a rollable surface attached to storage-unit framing. AllPeopleQuilt’s guide covers the tablecloth option, while Scrap Fabric Love’s tutorial includes a rollable example.

Check the fit before arranging a quilt
- Surface color: A neutral face makes it easier to assess how the blocks look together.
- Cling: Flannel and batting provide a slightly napped surface; try a few pieces first because materials can behave differently.
- Project area: Size the surface for the largest layout you expect to arrange, within the limits of your room.
- Firmness and portability: Use hanging fabric for simplicity, a board for added stability, or a rollable option when storage matters.
- Installation: Match mounting hardware to the panel’s weight and the wall construction rather than assuming a particular strip, anchor, or screw will work everywhere.
