A four-leaf clover is usually a three-leaflet clover with an uncommon fourth leaflet. It is associated with good luck in folklore, but its rarity is not governed by one universal set of odds: published estimates differ, and both genes and environmental conditions may be involved.
What makes a clover four-leafed?
What people commonly call a four-leaf clover is more precisely a clover with four leaflets. White clover (Trifolium repens) is a familiar example, but the variation has been observed in several clover species that ordinarily have three leaflets. It is not a separate kind of clover, nor is it limited to one species.
Why they are so rare is not fully settled. Penn State Extension describes four leaflets in white clover as arising through genetic and environmental factors. UGA Cooperative Extension says the precise interaction of genes, environmental conditions and other factors remains unresolved. The evidence points to multiple influences, not a complete explanation of exactly why a particular plant develops an extra leaflet.
How rare are four-leaf clovers?
There is no single source-backed probability that applies to every clover patch. Two frequently cited figures differ, and they describe different kinds of claims:

| Source | Reported figure | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Florida Museum of Natural History | 1 four-leaflet clover per 5,076 three-leaflet clovers | A ratio reported by the museum from a survey of more than 7 million clovers across eight countries on three continents. The surfaced account does not state the survey year or provide its sampling method. |
| Penn State Extension, updated 2026 | 1–2 four-leaf clovers per 10,000 three-leaf clovers | An estimate presented in the extension article, not the same survey result reported by the Florida Museum. |
These numbers are useful as attributed estimates, not as a promise about what you will find in a particular field. Local plant populations and conditions differ, and the Florida Museum account does not provide enough survey-method detail to treat its ratio as a universal rate.
Why are four-leaf clovers considered lucky?
The idea that a four-leaf clover brings good luck is folklore, not a demonstrated effect. The Florida Museum describes a longstanding belief that the plant could ward off evil spirits and prevent bad luck, dating back to the Middle Ages. The extra leaflet is also popularly associated with luck.

Penn State Extension identifies a 1620 statement by Sir John Melton as the first documented reference to the lucky four-leaf clover: “If a man walking in the fields find any four-leaved grass, he shall in a small while after, find some good thing.” That quotation records a historical belief; it is not evidence that finding a clover causes good fortune.

No. A traditional shamrock is understood to have three leaflets, while the lucky four-leaf clover has four. The historical plant meant by “shamrock” is not universally established: Penn State Extension lists Trifolium dubium and Trifolium repens among the candidates.

There is another source of confusion: plants commonly sold as shamrocks can be Oxalis, a wood-sorrel genus, rather than clover. Minnesota Extension explains this distinction. “Shamrock” is a cultural name, not a precise botanical identification, so it is not accurate to treat every shamrock-labelled plant—or every four-leaf clover—as the same thing.
