Lithium-ion batteries have environmental costs at every stage: extracting and refining minerals, manufacturing cells and packs, delivering electricity during use, and handling batteries at end of life. Their overall impact depends on chemistry, factory and mining locations, electricity sources, service life, repair or reuse, and the boundary used for comparison.

They are not simply “good” or “bad” for the environment. A sound assessment compares the battery’s full lifecycle and the service it provides. Recycling can reduce demand for primary materials and lower emissions from recovered metals, but it has impacts of its own and cannot immediately replace new mines.

Assess the whole battery lifecycle

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) frames a battery lifecycle assessment around raw-material acquisition, materials processing, product manufacture, use, and final disposition. Final disposition can include repair, reuse, recycling and residual waste. Looking only at the factory or disposal stage can therefore produce a misleading answer.

Lifecycle stage What creates environmental impact Questions that change the result
Raw-material acquisition Mining and other extraction of lithium, nickel, cobalt, copper, graphite and related materials disturb land and require energy, water and transport. Which minerals and chemistry are involved? Where are extraction and refining located?
Materials processing Converting ores and other feedstocks into battery-grade materials can be energy-intensive and can create emissions and waste. What electricity mix and process technology are used?
Cell and pack manufacture Dry rooms, formation cycling, equipment, heat and electricity contribute to embodied emissions. Is the comparison cradle-to-gate or a complete lifecycle? What factory and year are being studied?
Use The battery enables tools, vehicles or storage, but charging electricity and efficiency affect impacts over its useful life. How long does it last, how efficiently is it used, and what grid supplies its energy?
End of life Collection, transport, fire-risk management, processing, recovered materials and residual waste all matter. Is the pack repaired, reused or recycled, and what materials are actually recovered?

Comparisons should identify the chemistry, functional unit and system boundary. A cell, a complete pack, a vehicle, and a lifetime amount of delivered energy are different units. A recycling credit can also change the result depending on how the study accounts for displaced primary material.

How battery emissions compare with conventional alternatives

In its 2024 global analysis, the International Energy Agency (IEA) found that a medium-size battery-electric car has about half the lifecycle greenhouse-gas emissions of an equivalent internal-combustion car on average globally. That is a global average, not a universal result for every vehicle, battery, factory or electricity grid.

The battery contributes materially to an electric vehicle’s lifecycle emissions, especially before the vehicle is driven. IEA nevertheless reports that battery-related emissions are not the largest contributor to the vehicle’s total lifecycle result. Manufacturing location, electricity generation, vehicle size, driving efficiency and lifetime mileage can all shift the comparison.

This vehicle comparison should not be transferred directly to a cordless construction tool, a stationary battery or a replacement pack. Those products have different sizes, duty cycles, charging patterns, lifetimes and alternatives. The appropriate question is how much useful work or stored energy the battery delivers over its life relative to the alternative.

Chemistry changes the footprint

Lithium-ion is a family of chemistries rather than one uniform material recipe. Nickel-based chemistries and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) use different quantities and combinations of battery minerals. That changes mining requirements, manufacturing impacts, performance characteristics and the value of recovered materials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

IEA’s 2026 analysis notes that LFP’s lower recovered-material value can make recycling economics more difficult than for chemistries containing more valuable nickel or cobalt. A lower recycling value does not by itself establish a higher or lower total environmental footprint; the answer still depends on the complete lifecycle and the service delivered.

For a construction project or fleet, specify the chemistry and compare batteries on a consistent basis. A ranking that combines different chemistries, factory regions, electricity mixes or study boundaries can hide more than it reveals.

What recycling does—and does not—solve

Recycling can reduce the need for new extraction and refining. IEA reported in 2024 that recycled lithium, nickel and cobalt incur, on average, 80% less greenhouse-gas emissions than primary materials from mining. That figure applies to the recycled materials compared with primary materials; it is not an 80% reduction in the emissions of a complete battery or vehicle.

Recycling also requires collection, transport, sorting, discharge, processing energy and management of residues. Poorly managed operations can create water or air pollution, and collection work can involve safety and labor risks. Recycling is therefore a lower-impact source of material in many circumstances, not an impact-free process.

Recycling cannot immediately supply all future battery minerals. In an IEA 2024 Announced Pledges Scenario projection, recycling by 2050 reduces the need for new mine development by 25% for lithium and nickel and 40% for copper and cobalt. Those are scenario estimates, not observed results or guarantees. New mining and refining investment remains necessary while demand grows and older batteries have not yet reached end of life.

How a lithium-ion battery is recycled

Exact facilities differ, but the EPA describes a common sequence:

  1. Collection and identification: The battery is routed to a suitable program and identified by type, condition and chemistry.
  2. Evaluation: A specialist may determine whether the pack can be repaired, reused or repurposed instead of immediately recycled.
  3. Discharge and fire-risk controls: Remaining energy is managed before mechanical processing. Damaged packs require additional precautions.
  4. Shredding and separation: Processing can produce black mass, copper and aluminum foils, separators, plastics, steel and electrolyte.
  5. Material recovery: Black mass and other streams are processed to recover usable metals. Pyrometallurgy uses heat; hydrometallurgy uses liquid chemical processes.
  6. Residual management: Materials that cannot be recovered still need controlled treatment and disposal.

Whether recycling delivers a benefit depends on the collection rate, transport distance, process energy, recovery yields and the primary production displaced by the recovered material. A battery labelled “recyclable” is not necessarily recycled unless it reaches an operating collection and processing route.

Why recycling volumes are still catching up

IEA’s 2026 analysis says electric vehicles and stationary storage account for around 90% of today’s lithium-ion battery market. Deployment increased more than sixfold between 2020 and 2025, but most recently deployed batteries remain in service. End-of-life volumes therefore lag deployment by roughly 15 years.

  • 1 pack of Energizer Ultimate Lithium AAA Batteries
  • These triple A batteries are the #1 longest lasting AAA batteries in high tech devices
  • Superior performance in extreme temperatures from -40 degrees F to 140 degrees F ensure reliable use in all seasons
  • 1 Pack AAA batteries are leak proof, guaranteed based on standard use
  • AAA battery pack lasts up to 25 years in storage for reliable backup batteries

That timing matters for recycling capacity and business models. IEA reports that more than 85% of global battery-recycling capacity is located in China. Capacity location is not the same as the amount actually recycled, the recovery rate or the quantity of recovered material produced. LFP’s lower material value can further pressure conventional economics; toll-based processing is one proposed response.

Safe disposal for construction sites, fleets and households

In the United States, EPA says most discarded lithium-ion batteries are likely to be ignitable and reactive hazardous wastes under applicable rules. Do not put them in household trash or ordinary curbside recycling by default. Fires can occur in collection vehicles and recycling equipment when batteries are damaged or short-circuited.

For small batteries and tools

  1. Remove the battery only if the product instructions allow it and the battery is intact.
  2. Keep terminals from contacting metal objects during temporary storage, using the method required by the receiving program.
  3. Use a retailer take-back program, storefront e-waste collection point or specialist battery collection service that confirms it accepts that battery type.
  4. Follow the receiving program’s packaging and transport instructions. A container intended for intact batteries is not automatically suitable for shipping a swollen, leaking or damaged battery.

For damaged, swollen or hot batteries

  • Stop using and charging the battery.
  • Do not puncture, crush, open or place it in a normal collection bag.
  • Keep people and combustible materials away and follow local fire-authority or hazardous-waste instructions.
  • Contact the manufacturer, retailer, vehicle dealer, qualified mechanic or local authority for a route that specifically accepts damaged batteries.

For electric-vehicle and large stationary packs

Large packs should normally be handled through the vehicle dealer, qualified mechanic, battery service provider or vehicle dismantler, depending on the product and local rules. Do not dismantle a high-voltage pack on a jobsite without the training, isolation equipment and authorization required for that system.

Reducing battery impacts on a project

Construction companies can reduce lifecycle impacts without treating recycling as the only solution.

  • Buy for service life: Select batteries and tools with appropriate capacity, repair support, replaceable components and realistic warranties. A longer useful life spreads manufacturing impacts over more work.
  • Use the right capacity: Avoid carrying oversized packs when a smaller pack performs the task efficiently, while accounting for duty cycle and safety.
  • Maintain charging equipment: Use approved chargers, prevent overheating and follow storage limits. Good maintenance protects workers and can prevent premature replacement.
  • Track batteries: Record owner, chemistry, condition, purchase date and final handoff. Traceability helps prevent damaged packs entering general waste.
  • Prefer repair or reuse when safe: A qualified assessment may extend service through repair or a second-life application. EPA recognizes repair and repurposing pathways, while IEA notes that second-life use faces safety, warranty, lifetime and economic constraints.
  • Contract for end-of-life handling: Confirm in writing which provider accepts the battery, how damaged units are handled, where material goes and what documentation is supplied.
  • Separate battery waste: Keep batteries out of mixed construction debris and ordinary recycling streams unless the local program expressly accepts them.

Bottom line

Lithium-ion batteries carry real extraction, processing, manufacturing and end-of-life impacts, but their environmental performance cannot be judged from one number or one stage. Use a full lifecycle boundary, identify the chemistry and geography, account for useful life and electricity, and verify the end-of-life route. Recycling can substantially reduce the emissions intensity of recovered minerals and lessen future mining pressure, while safe collection, durable use and continued responsible primary supply remain necessary.
