There is no single best freezer for every home. A chest freezer is often a good fit for bulk storage when you have floor space and do not need frequent access; an upright is easier to organize and takes up less floor area. Choose by comparing the space available, usable capacity, energy use, defrost type, temperature performance and—if it will sit in a garage—the model’s rated operating conditions.
Chest or upright: which type fits your space?
| Type | Useful when | Trade-offs to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Chest | You need room for bulk groceries, meat or preserved food and have enough floor area. | The top-opening design can make items at the bottom harder to reach. Chest models typically retain cold air better, but compare the individual model’s energy use rather than assuming it will always cost less. |
| Upright | You want shelves and easier access to separate foods, or have limited floor space. | It uses less floor area for a given storage capacity in some comparisons, but the door-opening design may lose more cold air. Check the model’s energy figures. |
| Compact | Your needs are modest or the installation space is unusually constrained. | Capacity and configuration vary. Confirm usable capacity, dimensions and defrost type on the specific model record. |
Consumer Reports illustrates the footprint difference with a 22-cubic-foot chest freezer measuring about 2 by 6 feet and a same-capacity upright measuring about 2½ by 2½ feet. Those are illustrative dimensions from its buying guide, not standard measurements for every freezer. Consumer Reports’ freezer buying guide also evaluates temperature performance, energy efficiency, ease of use and noise.
How much freezer capacity do you need?
Start with the food you actually plan to store: regular frozen groceries, bulk purchases, prepared meals or seasonal harvests. Then compare usable capacity and outside dimensions, not just the headline capacity. Measure the proposed location and the route into it, including doorways and turning space. Allow a few inches behind the appliance for air circulation, as ENERGY STAR advises.
A larger freezer is not automatically a better value if much of its capacity will sit unused. The U.S. Department of Energy says oversized freezers increase purchase cost, take more space and waste energy because of unused capacity. For a sense of scale, ENERGY STAR’s guidance gives category averages of 215 kWh per year and about $30 per year for certified chest freezers, compared with 395 kWh per year and about $60 per year for certified upright freezers. These are category averages, not guarantees for a particular model or household.

Compare energy use and defrost type
Read the EnergyGuide label
Use the yellow EnergyGuide label to compare annual energy consumption and estimated operating cost among models of similar size and configuration. ENERGY STAR certification is a separate efficiency screen: ENERGY STAR says certified freezers are at least 10 percent more energy efficient than the federal minimum standard. Confirm the current certification for the exact model before buying.
Choose between manual and automatic defrost
Manual-defrost freezers use half the energy of automatic-defrost models, according to ENERGY STAR, but they need periodic defrosting to achieve that saving. If choosing manual defrost, ENERGY STAR advises defrosting before frost exceeds one-quarter inch. Automatic defrost reduces that maintenance but uses more energy.

Energy-cost figures are estimates, not promises of what a household will pay; actual cost depends on local electricity rates, use and installation conditions. DOE FEMP’s December 2023 example modeled a 16.6-cubic-foot automatic-defrost upright and estimated lifetime savings of $66 for an ENERGY STAR-qualified freezer and $70 for the best-available model under its stated federal assumptions and then-current qualified-product data. Those modeled figures are not guaranteed savings for a current product or household.
Check temperature performance, noise and outage behavior
When comparing specific models, look for evidence on temperature consistency, usable capacity, noise and how long the freezer keeps food frozen during a power outage. Consumer Reports says these are among the dimensions in its evaluations; its broader guide describes climate-chamber testing, hot-garage testing and outage simulation. An outage holdover time should be treated as model-specific: do not assume a duration unless the manufacturer or a reliable test reports it for that unit.

Is the freezer suitable for a garage?
Check the exact model’s ambient-temperature rating before placing it in an unconditioned garage. A freezer that performs well in a typical indoor kitchen may not be suitable for a hot or cold outbuilding. Consumer Reports describes testing some freezers in a 110°F chamber, but that test does not establish that every model can safely operate in a garage. Verify the permitted operating range in the manufacturer’s specifications and compare it with expected conditions where you live.

ENERGY STAR says to keep a freezer at 0°F. DOE recommends a target range of -5°F to 0°F and suggests using an appliance thermometer because many residential freezers do not display the actual interior temperature. Place the thermometer where it can give a useful reading and check it after the unit has had time to stabilize.
