The company’s report does not name those data centers, so Fab 34 should not be described as Intel’s newest data center.
Which Intel facilities have LEED Gold?
There are two distinct Intel claims. Intel announced LEED Gold certification for Fab 34, a semiconductor manufacturing fab, on April 22, 2024. The facility officially opened in September 2023. Separately, Intel IT’s 2023–2024 Annual Performance Report says two HPC data centers received LEED Gold, but the cited passage does not identify them.
That distinction matters: the available information does not establish that Fab 34 is a data center, nor does it establish that it is one of the two certified HPC facilities. Intel’s announcement calls Fab 34 its newest manufacturing facility in Ireland, not its newest data center. Intel’s Fab 34 announcement and Intel IT’s annual performance report describe the claims separately.
What LEED Gold covers at Fab 34
Intel says the LEED Gold certification applies to four parts of the Leixlip project: the manufacturing clean room, process-specific support systems building, industrial waste treatment systems building, and process utility building. Intel identifies the award as LEED Building Design and Construction (BD+C) and calls Fab 34 the first Intel fab to achieve that Gold rating. The company also describes it as one of Europe’s largest building projects to receive that level of recognition.

Water and heat measures Intel reports
Fab 34 process water
Intel says an advanced ultra-pure reclaim-water system enables recovery of more process water. The company reports process-water reuse and conservation exceeding 275 million gallons per year at the new factory. This is a factory process-water figure.

Recovered heat at Fab 34
In a November 2024 announcement, Intel Ireland reported a 9-to-1 ratio of recovered heat compared with heat generated by traditional methods, saying the recovered heat is used to warm cleanrooms and support buildings. Intel’s announcement does not provide additional measurement details in the cited claim. Intel Ireland’s announcement attributes the figure to the company.
Water returned by the Ireland campus
The same Intel Ireland announcement says the campus returns 92% of the water it takes in to the River Liffey. This is a campus-level claim; it is not the same measure as Fab 34’s reported process-water reuse and conservation.

What Intel says about its two HPC data centers
Intel IT’s 2023–2024 report says LEED awarded Gold certification to two HPC data centers. In the cited passage, the report does not give their names, locations, certification dates, or LEED rating-system versions. No facility-specific identification should be inferred from the Fab 34 announcement.
The report also lists data-center practices used by Intel IT, including recycling water for cooling, using fuel cells as an alternative energy source, and reusing data-center heat for offices and manufacturing. The cited passage does not say that each practice is used at either of the two Gold-certified facilities.

Choosing a LEED pathway for a data-center project
For owners and construction teams planning certification, the appropriate LEED rating system depends on the project’s scope and stage of completion. USGBC’s current guidance distinguishes these paths:
- BD+C Data Centers: for qualifying new, whole-building data centers.
- Core and Shell: when a substantial portion of the floor area is incomplete.
- O+M: for qualifying existing, operational buildings.
- ID+C: for eligible interior fit-outs.
USGBC says LEED v5 is available for specified commercial project types and provides data-center-specific guidance on energy-efficiency prerequisites and credits. The current pathway guidance is not evidence that Intel’s earlier certifications used LEED v5; the rating-system version for the two HPC centers is not stated in the cited report. See USGBC’s LEED v5 guidance for current project information.

How to assess a data-center LEED claim
A useful comparison starts with the project boundary and certification basis, rather than treating all sustainability claims as equivalent. Check:
- Scope: Is certification for a whole building, a core-and-shell project, an existing operation, or an interior fit-out?
- Rating system and version: Which LEED pathway and version apply?
- Performance measures: Are energy and water outcomes stated as measured results, design commitments, or company-reported estimates?
- Heat reuse: Is recovered heat tied to the certified building, or described at a broader campus or organization level?
- Claim boundary: Does each figure refer to the certified facility, a factory, a campus, or Intel IT generally?
These distinctions are particularly important here: Intel reports Fab 34 water and heat measures with different boundaries, while its HPC report does not attribute its listed practices to either named facility.
