The award applied to that phase—not necessarily to the entire campus—and reflected the challenge of improving a multi-tenant data center while meeting customer requirements for temperature, humidity, power and uptime.
What did QTS earn in Atlanta?
QTS received LEED Gold certification for Phase II of its Atlanta Metro data center, according to DataCenterKnowledge’s November 16, 2011 report. The distinction was presented as a building and operational achievement. It should be understood as a historical award for the named phase; the available reporting does not establish the campus’s current certification status or any later recertification.
The multi-tenant setting made efficiency work more constrained than simply changing environmental settings. The U.S. Green Building Council’s Rick Fedrizzi, quoted in the report, noted that tenant agreements can require specific temperature and humidity guidelines. Operators therefore have to pursue building efficiency without disregarding contractual operating conditions.
What measures did QTS report?
Rainwater capture for cooling
QTS said it dedicated 4.5 acres of roof space to capturing rainwater for cooling. That figure describes roof area allocated to water capture; the announcement does not state the volume collected or the share of cooling demand supplied by the system.

Improved power usage effectiveness
QTS reported that power usage effectiveness (PUE) at Atlanta Metro had improved 11.4% since January 2010. PUE compares a data center’s total energy use with the energy delivered to IT equipment; a lower value generally indicates less overhead energy. The 2011 report gives a percentage improvement, not the starting or ending PUE values.
Planned efficiency investment
After an Environmental Defense Fund Climate Corps engagement, QTS said it planned a $10 million multi-year investment in efficiency measures. QTS chief technology officer Brian Johnston said the company aimed to pass cost savings to customers interested in going green. The announcement describes a planned investment, not confirmation that the full amount was later spent or a quantified customer saving.

How large was the Atlanta Metro site?
A QTS Atlanta-Metro facility profile published in 2013 described the facility as 970,000 square feet, with a 120 MVA Georgia Power substation. These are figures from that profile, rather than a current campus inventory. In 2019, QTS announced an adjacent expansion of more than 250,000 square feet and 72 critical megawatts, saying the existing campus was fully built out and near fully occupied. The later expansion announcement is distinct from the 2011 certification and does not establish that the added area was included in Phase II’s LEED award.

The 2011 announcement combined the building certification with water capture, a reported PUE improvement and a planned efficiency investment. QTS also participated in renewable-power efforts: its 2018 ESG report, published in 2019, placed the company 12th in the EPA Green Power Partnership’s Tech & Telecom sector. That ranking is a separate corporate sustainability measure, not a measure of the Atlanta facility’s LEED status.
