Planning records describe a planned gas generator compound at Microsoft’s Grange Castle campus in Ireland, intended to serve the DUB15 data centre. They do not establish that the compound has been completed or is operating. The documents also distinguish it from separate temporary generator arrangements used or proposed while a gas connection was delayed.

What the Grange Castle plans describe

The South Dublin County Council planning record for the DUB14 and DUB15 campus describes a gas generator compound serving DUB15. It lists 20 generators, five electrical houses and five flues, and identifies a Gas Networks Ireland (GNI) gas skid. The same record describes a separate diesel-generator arrangement for DUB14; that equipment should not be counted as part of the DUB15 gas compound. South Dublin County Council planning record.

An EPA-hosted planning document likewise describes Gas Plant 1 as containing 20 generator units. It says the plant, when operational, would facilitate decommissioning a temporary gas-powered generation plant. This indicates a planned role in site power provision, but the document details do not establish the generators’ electrical capacity or how they would be operated. EPA-hosted planning document.

How the permanent plan differs from temporary generators

Several separate planning records concern temporary power at DUB15. They describe different proposals at different times, not additions to the permanent compound’s 20-generator count.

Arrangement What the record says Planning context
Planned gas generator compound 20 generators, five electrical houses and five flues; intended to serve DUB15, with a GNI gas skid identified. Described in the DUB14/DUB15 campus planning record. The material available does not confirm completion or operation.
Temporary replacement generators 13 generators proposed for DUB15 pending construction and operation of the permitted GNI skid. In application ED24/0060, South Dublin County Council determined that the proposed use was not exempt and required planning permission. This is not evidence that the 13-generator arrangement became operational. Council application ED24/0060.
Temporary HVO-fuelled generators Nine generators, with flue stacks approximately 30.95 metres high. South Dublin County Council granted planning permission in 2025 for this temporary arrangement. It is distinct from both the permanent gas compound and the 13-generator proposal. 2025 HVO generator permission.

Why temporary power was proposed

An EPA-hosted licence-change document says delay to the gas connection required an alternative power supply for DUB15. Its schedule runs from Q2 2025 to Q2 2026, but that is a historical schedule, not confirmation that the work was completed on time or that the permanent gas connection is now operating. EPA-hosted licence-change document.

The distinction matters on a construction project: a proposal for temporary generation, a permission to use it, and commissioning of permanent gas infrastructure are separate milestones. The records cited here document plans and permission decisions; they do not provide a current, verified account of construction or commissioning.

What is not established about the project

The planning descriptions and EPA documents cited here do not establish the permanent compound’s electrical capacity, annual gas consumption, emissions, operating hours, or ability to export electricity to the grid. A count of generator units cannot be used to calculate those figures without equipment specifications and operating assumptions.

A separate February 2026 planning statement for another project cites a national target of at least 2 GW of new flexible gas plant by 2030. That is policy context only: it is not a capacity figure, approval or target specific to Microsoft’s Grange Castle installation. February 2026 planning statement for a separate project.

What the records mean for the headline

The available planning and EPA records support describing this as a planned gas generator compound intended to serve Microsoft’s DUB15 data centre at Grange Castle—not as a confirmed, newly operating standalone power station. They document the compound’s proposed equipment and separate temporary supply measures, but do not settle the permanent plant’s present status. Later planning or licence changes may also have altered the project details.
