It is 1.5 inches tall, so it suits a modest layer of mulch better than deep rock or a tall, dramatic border. For those needs, a taller option such as the 8-inch Edge Right steel edging or 6.5-inch Beuta Faux Stones may be a better fit.
The recommendations below reflect The Spruce’s reported tests and evaluations, not independent testing by Bette’s Worth Construction. The Spruce says it tested 11 products and selected eight category winners, with testing continuing for six months. Read The Spruce’s full roundup.
How to choose landscape edging for your yard
Start with what the edge must do: define a mowing line, hold mulch or loose material, contain spreading grass, or create a visible border. Then compare the product’s height, material, appearance, installation method, soil conditions, and how easily it follows the shape of your bed.
- For a low-profile mowing or mulch edge: A short border can define the boundary without creating a tall barrier. It is not the right choice for containing a deep layer of rock.
- For a taller border or loose material: Taller edging can create more visual separation and help retain a greater depth of material. Check the product height against the level you need to contain.
- For curves: Look for a product described as flexible and shapeable. Metal can bend around curves, but hammering it carelessly may kink it.
- For rocky soil: The Spruce reports that teeth on the Edge Right metal edging helped it cut through rocky soil. Installation still requires care to avoid bending the metal.
- For mowing access: A flat-profile option can let a mower reach the lawn edge, although sections may need attention after mowing.
Material involves trade-offs. The Spruce characterizes plastic as affordable and versatile, but potentially more maintenance-intensive than metal. Metal can provide a durable border, though it may cost more or rust. Wood offers a natural look but can be vulnerable to rot and pests if untreated. Natural stone is durable but heavy and often demanding to install; faux stone offers a lighter alternative.

Most of these picks install without a trench, but the Amazon Basics coil requires a shallow trench. Moist soil can make driving stakes easier, and a guide string can help maintain a straight line. No-dig edging may not stop all spreading grass: some grass rhizomes can grow beneath it. A buried metal barrier may be more appropriate when containing spreading grass is a priority.

Best overall: EasyFlex No-Dig Landscape Edging Kit
The Spruce’s top pick is a 40-foot plastic border with a 1.5-inch profile, secured with plastic spikes. The testers found it flexible enough for curves and straight runs, and reported no damage after six months from weather, a mower, or a weed wacker. Its low height is useful for a subtle boundary and a modest mulch layer, but does not make it a good choice for containing deep rock.
Best steel: Edge Right Hammer-in Landscape Edging
The tested metal version is 8 inches tall and 48 feet long, with metal spikes. The Spruce reports that its bottom teeth helped it cut through rocky soil and that the metal could bend around curves. To reduce the risk of kinking it while hammering, the article recommends placing a wood block over the edging as protection.

- Suitable for: This garden edging border is suitable for loose ground and provides a good separation between grass and garden. It can be used to improve the appearance of landscape edges and create clean gardens and pathways. Ideal for landscape edging, patio gardens and lawns.
- More Spikes: Ours kit includes 2 pack 33 ft edging for landscape and 100 pcs landscape stakes (We provide 5 stakes per 1 meter and others provide 3 stakes per meter). You can buy as many as you need depending on the size of your garden.
Best decorative: Vigoro Adirondack No-Dig Landscape Edging
These 4.5-inch-high plastic fence-style sections cover 15 feet in total. Interlocking pieces, spiral stakes, and a solid lower section give the product a decorative look while helping retain mulch. The Spruce notes that the supplied spikes may not secure every hole in every installation, so check the fit and stability as you assemble the run.
Easiest installation: Beuta Landscape Edging
This faux-stone plastic edging is 2.25 inches high and 40 feet long, and uses metal spikes. The Spruce tester reported installing 40 feet in 15 minutes. Its long spikes may be unsuitable where concrete sits close beneath shallow soil; shorter spikes may need to be sourced separately for those locations.
Best wood: Eco-Green Lawn & Landscape Border Edging
The 4-inch-high wood edging comes in a 20-foot length and has attached spikes. The Spruce found it easy to connect and flexible to shape, while noting one misdrilled hole in the tested product. Because wood can be vulnerable to rot and pests when untreated, consider the product’s treatment and your site’s exposure when deciding whether it suits the installation.

Best budget: Amazon Basics Landscape Edging Coil
This 5-inch-high, 40-foot plastic coil differs from most of the roundup because it needs a shallow trench; plastic spikes clip onto it. The Spruce’s author reported that the tested edging had not shifted over six months despite changing weather and snow. That observation applies to the author’s test, not to every soil condition or installation.
Easiest to mow around: Vigoro EcoBorder Brown Rubber Landscape Edging
Made from recycled-tire rubber, this edging is 3.13 inches high and 24 feet long. It is installed by connecting and staking sections. Its flat profile lets a mower reach the lawn edge, but The Spruce reports that sections occasionally needed reconnecting after mowing.

What The Spruce evaluated
The Spruce says it researched edging across materials, heights, lengths, and styles, then tested 11 products in testers’ yards. Its evaluations covered installation time and requirements, shaping around bends, appearance, separation and containment, mowing and trimming practicality, cleaning, damage, shifting, loosening, and value. The article reports that testing continued for six months; these findings describe its testing rather than a guarantee of performance in every yard.
When a different edging approach may suit the job
Landscape architect John Valentino, founder of John & Bob’s Smart Soil Solutions, told The Spruce that edging should stay in place and hold its shape without bending, rising, or dropping. He also said his team typically uses 4-inch metal edging placed just barely above the grade of the materials being separated. That is his stated practice, not a universal specification: the right height and placement depend on the materials, site, and the purpose of the edge. The Spruce’s article attributes these comments to Valentino.
