How the challenge works
Each day, pick a small area or category, decide what no longer belongs in your home, and gather a bag-sized amount. Martha Stewart’s guide suggests areas such as a junk drawer, pantry, kitchen drawers, coat closet, nightstands, bathroom storage, and bookshelves. For each item, consider whether you use it regularly, whether it serves a purpose, or whether you would choose to buy it again today. Martha Stewart’s challenge guide also recommends gathering a few bags in advance; there is no need to buy 30 new ones.
Choose a realistic bag size
A grocery bag or reusable tote can count. The goal is a consistent, manageable amount, not a daily quota of large sacks. If filling a bag every day would be too much, make the bag smaller or adjust the pace.
Give every bag an exit plan
Before clutter accumulates, decide what can be donated or sold, what a local recycling program accepts, and what must be discarded. Usable items are not automatically rubbish. For electronics, batteries, chemicals, textiles, and other restricted materials, check local rules and the receiving organization’s requirements before packing or dropping them off. How to make the daily routine manageable
Make the decisions easier by choosing your areas ahead of time and starting with an uncomplicated category. Good Housekeeping’s organizers recommend using a grocery-size bag, setting a 15-minute timer, planning clutter hotspots, and choosing a staging place for items waiting to be donated, recycled, sold, or discarded. Good Housekeeping’s challenge article also notes that a weekly bag may suit people who find daily tasks demanding.
Start with an easy win
Pick a small, defined area rather than trying to tackle a whole room. An expired pantry category, a junk drawer, or a medicine cabinet can give you a clear boundary for the session. Starting with easier decisions can leave more time and energy for belongings that take longer to sort.

Adjust the schedule without abandoning the goal
Missing a day does not need to end the effort. Pause, resume at a sustainable pace, use smaller bags, or switch to one bag a week. The format is meant to create steady progress, not turn the calendar into a reason to quit. If an item is difficult to decide about, set it aside with a reminder to revisit it later rather than forcing an immediate choice.
Respect everyone’s belongings
Remove your own possessions and items other household members have agreed can go. A shared home is not permission to discard another person’s belongings without their agreement.

Who may find the challenge useful—and who may not
The daily structure can work well for someone who prefers short, repeated tasks and clear targets. It may be a poor fit for people with busy schedules or decision fatigue, particularly as the easy-to-remove clutter disappears and sentimental choices remain. Lynda Reider of Cut the Clutter RVA described that tension to Good Housekeeping: “Some people find it manageable because it breaks decluttering into small, daily tasks. However, for those with busy schedules or decision fatigue, it can feel overwhelming. It can be especially tough toward the end when obvious clutter is gone and the harder, sentimental decisions arise.”
There is no established completion rate or measured outcome for this specific challenge in the cited coverage, so treat it as an organizing format rather than a proven formula for transforming a home. Its practical value depends on whether the pace and decisions suit you.

What to prepare before day one
- A short list of areas: Map out small zones or categories so you are not deciding what to do from scratch each day.
- Bags you already have: Grocery bags, reusable totes, or small trash bags can work; choose a size that makes the target attainable.
- A staging spot: Set aside a place for sorted items that are awaiting their destination.
- Destination labels, if helpful: Sticky notes or masking tape can distinguish donation, recycling, sale, and disposal items.
- Acceptance and disposal checks: Confirm rules for restricted items with local programs and receiving sites before transporting them.
How this challenge differs from other decluttering routines
The format is defined by daily sessions and a bag-sized unit of progress. If that structure does not suit you, adapt the cadence or choose a different unit while keeping the same useful principles: plan the work, keep each session manageable, and make sure sorted items leave the home.
